ABOUT THIS FILM
____________________
Tawny owls
I've been following the story of tawny owls Luna & Bomber over many years and this year the pair had three chicks of their own this year.
Rescue chicks
But this incredible owl pair also took on six more rescued tawny owl chicks, responding to their calls to be fed.
Now branching
All of these owlets are now out of the nest, hopping between branches. But it's hard to spot them in the tree canopy.
Thermal binoculars
Thermal imaging is often used at night, but they can be used in the day as well and when the wind is blowing the leaves about it can be hard to find them with the naked eye.
Thermal imaging
Thermal imaging picks up heat signatures and I can locate the owls from as far as 70m. I can toggle through from optical view to thermal and the options include white hot, black hot, fusion and red hot.
Why I like using thermal binoculars
These make locating wildlife much faster and easier for me and that gives me more time to film their wild, secret lives.

Brilliant, no tawny owls on the Isle of Man 🇮🇲 where I live but the Long eared owl thrives here along with the barn owl and occasionally we get the short eared owls . The thermal imaging cameras are an absolute game changer for spotting what you’d not see with the naked eye. Brilliant video

Oh I do like long eared owls 🦉 tawny owls compete with them and the tawny win so they are lest common on the main land

@@RobertEFuller interesting to know , maybe that’s why the Leo thrives here on the Isle of Man 🇮🇲 in most woodland and plantation areas . I’ve got some great shots over the last few weeks of young ones branching and the adults coming in to feed them and the call they make is so distinctive .

Robert, thank you for what you do for these animals! In previous videos, I have seen the owls catch what appears to me to be baby chickens. I may be wrong as I do not know for sure if these are chicks, but in a particular video you mentioned that you left the owl some food and it looked like a chick again. Do you hatch chicks that are meant to help supplement the owls diet? Or do the owls just happen to get one of the chicks that your hens hatched?
@RobertEFuller

The chicken chicks, I buy them frozen , they are male’s chicks from the hen laying industry I also buy mice but they are very expensive
