Spouse Says NO to You Wearing the Kilt? What do you do?

Okay so the type of kilt is a bit academic for this video. What the lads get to discussing is family and spousal support for the kilted lifestyle.
What do you do if your significant other does not like you wearing the kilt?
How do you have a productive discussion with them about why you want to do it, and what the kilt means to you?
Rocky's basic take is that open and honest communication is crucial. The goal is to determine exactly what about the kilt is disturbing your spouse. The most common concern is that the kilt looks effeminate, or is too ono-conformist for the community in which you live.
This may be more personal than "what will the neighbors think?" In many cases we have found, especially with women, the concern is over what family members, parents or immediate circles such as a church congregation may think. This will require a lot of discussion and parsing out your mutual priorities and needs. It may be the hardest hurdle of them all.
Another classic unspoken feeling is jealousy. Some S.O.s are simply insecure about themselves and the strength of the relationship. They worry that the kilt wearer will get a lot of attention and, shall we say, invitations. In this case, special attention and support is crucial. You must make sure they realize how important they are to you and that they are absolutely "along for the ride" as you enjoy the adventures of life.
On a brighter note, sometimes the issue is a more surface-level insecurity - they may feel you simply look better dressed than they do when you go out. They may feel like they have to put on some kind of show to match your fashion statement. This is usually the easiest worry to overcome. Sometimes through playing with matching outfits. Sometimes through making sure you are toning down all aspects of your outfit except the kilt (ie. "normalizing" the kilt).
In some cases, you may need to "agree to disagree" and find a compromise. We don't feel this is optimal, but one way to do this is to agree to only wear the kilt when you are going out without your S.O. -- an "out of sight out of mind" approach. This can work. It can also be a stepping stone to normalization. The more often they see you kilted, the more they get used to it, and the less they want to take the time to worry about it if you have something you both need/want to do out of the house.
No matter how you decide to play it, be as understanding of their feelings as possible. Stand up for what you want to do, but acknowledge them and their concerns. Time is on your side and patience is a Good Thing.

My Japanese wife was a bit “confused”, but accepting when I told her I would be wearing my kilt and Prince Charlie for our wedding (which was a bit hit). When I first became a “serial kilter”, she and my kids teased me for a little bit, but now they barely notice and everything’s fine. I explained to her what it means to me, my pride in my heritage and how my grandfather used to tell us stories about our clan when I was a kid. She still sometimes playfully gives me a hard time because whenever we’re out and about, strangers inevitably compliment my kilt or want to talk Scotland and clans. She’s a very proper, somewhat introverted Japanese lady who like most of her culture, prefer to blend in and not be noticed. However, with a little time she’s come to terms with being married to a Celtic peacock. Brother, if you ain’t who you are, you’re nobody! If your wife can’t accept that, you have some thinking to do.

I thought about buying a kilt since there are a few Scottish surnames in my family tree but I ultimately decided not to. I just don't like attention and I prefer to blend in myself when I'm out in public. I'm much more comfortable wearing a tartan scarf instead which I often do during the winter. It's a little more subtle way of showing the pride I have in my Scottish heritage and it makes me feel "cool" besides. I certainly respect those with the balls to wear something so wild and prominent but kilts just aren't my style.

Hey so my family hates me wearing a kilt. They must be jealous because they got my kilt all wrinkled, took it out of my closet and crumpled it up in a ball, thinking it was ruined because we have no iron. All I did was get it soaking wet and straighten the pleats by hand, and it's good as new 😋 I'll never stop wearing it!

At least then they will always be looking over their shoulders and checking their clothes to make sure you didn't. But mostly it will keep them honest, in line and make them respect you and your belongings. Just remember; They did you a nasty by trying to ruin something you love, so you owe them one. Being single is soooo liberating! I'm a 280+lb black guy in Pittsburgh ( I only mention that, because it's the first thing folks in this city bring up), I stand out, LOL! I get tons of compliments, and it's great not having a significant other to veto my wardrobe decisions. I think a lot of people are jealous of the confidence. I guess it's also a matter of WHEN he started wearing a kilt. Was he already married? Or was it a thing before they met?
@thomaspatton4401

For me, generally speaking, we have to accept all aspect of each other (spouse to spouse) before we marry. If that means kilts to then that's what it means! It doesn't matter when you started, what matters is heritage and what you want to do with it. if it means wearing a kilt then do it! You should never veto each other's wardrobes, it will only result in resentment and bigger problems neither of you need.

My wife hates the attention I'm getting when I'm out in a kilt. Most of the time people are quite nice and discreet, but we cannot stand the annoying ones x) She is more concern about safety than anything else, some folks happened to be unpredictable sometimes. She digs the look and really like everything about it (culture, country, clans history, etc) but like you guys said many times the kilt is not a common garment, and you are going to be bothered at some point because it is so unique. Love and care for your husband/wife, for whom he or she is, not for what he or she wears.....

I get the consern but the thing is no one should conform to what others want. I'm a man I like kilts and I carry a gun at all times. So no one starts sh.t with me but I know that's not an option for everyone. But typically I believe everyone should be armed weather it's a gun, knife, sword, etc because especially these days you never know what's going to happen. And believe it or not but wearing a kilt and a drop leg holster with a 9mm cz75 is really comfortable. And my wife loves the look

All you can do sometimes is educate those who don't understand. Many times I have found out the surnames of the hecklers and educated them on their own family background. As a result they walked away feeling like a first class jerk for the way they were treating me up until they found out that they shared the same heritage. They instantly realized that they couldn't put me down without insulting themselves at the same time. Just part of being a good Kilted Ambassador.

I wore a kilt on our first date 6 years ago. Since she got used to my wearing a kilt from the beginning, she has no issues now. However, she did have some issues initially when women who neither of us knew would walk up to me and blatantly flirt with me when I am kilted, as if she wasn't there. But she has gotten past that and now when it happens, she interjects herself into the conversation and starts talking to the woman/women, referring to me as her husband. The oddest circumstance, which we both find amusing, is when we are in nearby Provincetown, Massachusetts in summer when it is a Mecca for gay people and gay men come up and start flirting with me when I am kilted. She does a similar thing and starts talking to the man/men, referring to me as her husband.

My significant others have appreciated the attention garnered by wearing a kilt; if a Woman is self-actualized, knowing she gets to take you home, the flirting confirms her choice of a Man for his 'bravado'. I had discussions with other people who thought that she was in the wrong. Her and I had a good discussion, we were going to a formal event where I was planning to wear my kilt, and after that she didn't mind it (though I am not sure if she ever really liked it). I agree that this is less about kilt wearing and more about something else. If something looks good, you simply know it. Consider how the kilt looks and the context in which it will be worn. I think kilts are righteous in Fine Arts museums, followed by a restaurant. Museums tend to vibe with afterlife, and so do kilts. Perhaps purchase an outfit for wifey that will match your own?

In the traditional Scottish wedding they "hand fast" using a long strip of the Husband's tartan to form the "binding tie" between groom and bride to show the further bond of Holy matrimony. It would be appropriate for your Wife to wear your Tartan even if she isn't of Scottish decent. She is your Wife and that makes it allowable. This shows that she is of your Clan now.

It sounds like you have a good balance there. it's a shame she has such a one sided view of you, but, we are peacocks about it there is no getting around that. Just don't be afraid to make a stand on those appropriate occasions when you really want to turn out. If she says no then it is well within your rights to ask why and be given a good reason why. It is good that you ask her "if she minds," That shows consideration and respect on your part, (Good for you). But the fact that "She tolerates it," Frankly that throws up red flags to me that she is in control of the evening and how it will be conducted. (Hence the need for an explanation). Or that she "allows you" to wear a kilt and is in the position to decide when and where you will wear it. If it is a strategy thing with her then you should be more on the same page with her rather than you simply following instructions. If it is a insecurity issue (Which she will likely not admit) then you need to ferret it out of her so it can be delt with. If it is that she simply is not in the mood to watch your back and deflect all the slings, arrows and knives being placed there from all the others as they gossip and snipe you behind it, then she needs to be reminded that as a card carrying Member of "Team Fannin" you are supposed to support and defend each other in all events and situations. Rocky says it's a 100/100 not just 50/50 Relationship and I agree By the sound of it you both need to re-evaluate the people you call your friends. Call it, (Them) out, publicly. Say what everyone else is thinking. Let them know that chances are good that many of them have Scottish Heritage as well. Tell them what they are saying about you they are saying so much more about themselves as well, and not a bit of it is good! The only difference is, you have the balls to say it to their faces, where they cower and hide in the shadows of anonymity, and they are the ones who have to live with that personal dishonor! God damn, I wasn't expecting them to be quite so good on this subject. Very nicely done! I like how he mentioned nonconformity. The gender roles today are so silly, especially when considering the history of men in beautiful flowing dresses and skirts (and a LOT more than that), including how pants were originally seen as feminine, and then exclusively masculine. I'm glad society is moving away from these silly gender role norms, and towards people just doing what they wanna do, like why give a single shit if a woman wears pants (was a MASSIVE deal), or a man wears makeup (men used to wear more makeup than women). Why are painted nails on men a girl thing now (didn't used to be), what about nails that are painted in a "masculine manner" (not that they should need to be). Society is weird.

I think if I was already wearing it once or twice a week like I do now, it would have been a different story. I have more confidence about it now. There were also practical discussions about "what colour, what tartan, style, is it ok as non scottish" and the idea to better invest my money in a suit that could be re-used for weddings, funerals, etc. There was no fight or fuss about it, just a good laugh. So long as you don't regret your decision. Weddings, prom, Graduations these only come once. Weddings maybe twice (I hope not). Just make very sure you don't look back and say, "Damn I wish I had worn my kilt for that!" And Kilt day should be when ever you want it to be, not when it is allowable. Be Proud of who you are!

The fact that you advise gradually introducing the Kilt to your wife is sad but true. I have six Kilt/utilikilts that I wear regularly. My wife prefers that I don't wear them frequently but has alas come to accept them. Public = yes, Church = no.

I think you should wear it to church. (don't ask for premision or warn anyone in advance.) Trust me, it's your next big adventure. You don't have to go full formal peacock (P.C. with fly plaid.) A black, grey or blue Argyle jacket and waistcoat will do fine. Just get ready, cause you will turn heads.

And they complain that we treat them or stare at them like meat, all the while they are doing the same thing to us. as far as I am concerned they have no right to complain. back in the day we were called "Male Chauvanist Pigs" for that. So, by the same token and some forty years later, does that make them "Female Chauvanist Pigs?" I say yes every bit as emphatically as they said it then! So much for Women being more "Elightened" than Men! It only took them forty years for them to get to where we were forty years ago. Meanwhile we men moved on.

Perhaps he needs some excuses A burns Night Dinner on January 25th, (You'll want to research that to do it right). Perhaps a full formal and kilted anniversary party invite friends and family to come and encourage Highland dress. USA Kilts can help with that. Kilted dates are always fun too especially if both of you are in full tartans. Or stage a quiet night in and watch The Highlander movies or the Outlander series or Rob Roy That should get the old boy's Highlander blood pumping. Show him that you are interested in it too. I'm lucky my wife really likes the way I look in a kilt. I wish I knew were my utila kilt was. I looked for it for 2 hours today. I have been made fun of for wearing a kilt. But not when I was with her. If the reason is about community perception just tell her to tell the ones talking crap about it, my husband is very manly he is of Scottish descent so he wears a kilt.

The only reason that a woman should be against a man wearing a kilt is if she has been raised with the feeling that men should not wear women's clothing and she thinks it looks like a dress or skirt. If that is the case then tell her that she should no longer wear pants. Dresses only

Kilts are not skirts. I recently bought my first kilt at a Renaissance festival and the woman who sold it to me asked me to give her a "swish". I told her she could bite me. I was already somewhat uncomfortable and that comment made me feel a bit like Olive Oyl. Now I see it as the masculine garment that it is. Only a real man can pull it off, and I ain't about to "swish"!
@thomaspatton4401

You got it wrong Brother. The "swish" is a good thing. It's how you make your pleats sway or "swish" as you walk. So take pride Brother and work those pleats! Be a proper "Celtic Peacock."Be proud of who you are and the Heritage you represent. We are with ya!

Right. This is why “foreign” women have an advantage. All those accents means there’s so many more open minded opinions. American women seem to follow the mob mentality all too often. Here in the Southern U.S, many of us are probably Scottish decent. I know that I am. But, wearing a Kilt here may get you killed ! Maybe not litterlly but figuratively, for sure. I think Kilts are interesting. But unless it becomes widely popular, which is unlikely, I'll probably never wear one. I am not a trend sitter. Lol. Sometimes I think it would be quite comfortable. But, it's just not our culture. From what I understand not many Scottish men wear them very often. Some women may find it effeminate. I wouldn't want my wife to dress in something I considered manly. Couples are a set.

I don't know where in the south you're from, but I've never had this issue. I'm in the Southern Appalachians where there are a lot of non-conformists and weirdos, and a lot of Gaelic people too; so that may be why.

Set of what? Book ends? Your culture is fine I don't knock it. live and let live. But couples are a team of two starting out who support each other and play to each other's strengths for the greater good of the team until it is time to have some other little team mates. It is a shame when people can be that short sighted that a mere garment could be the cause of someone's demise, possibly because of aledged small mindedness. however I am glad you at least find them (kilts) "interesting." This is just me but I don't think I could live in a place where my life would hang in the balance over such a trivial thing as a garment. I never cared for people who try to dictate to me what I should wear or not wear. If it were me, and this is just me, I think I would consider a move as soon as possible.

First of all I don't understand these men who are so cowered by their wives that they are told what they can and can't wear, what they can and can't do. What I find even harder to understand is men who would actually tell people that his wife dictates what he can and can't do. I would say that the style of kilt you wear is the least of your concerns.
