Main Example: First Pokemon Mystery dungeon game. (Massive Spoiler): The Gengar that's Part of Team Meanies in The Rescue team games was kind of an Arrogant and selfish prick in his human life prior to being cursed by Ninetales and staight up abandoned his Gardevoir after said Gardevoir gave her life to save him from a Different Curse from Ninetales. Realistically, Gardevoir has every right to hate him, and even acknowledges how much of an ass he was, but Gardevoir still loved him unconditionally, flaws and all. Upon finding that out, Gengar begins to feel guilty and remorseful and even starts his own redemption arc where he sets out to undo his mistake and save Gardevoir from what is a fate worse than death, and he succeeds, but at the cost of Gardevoir no longer remembering him, which even Gengar acknowledges is better than he deserves.
