This video has amazing closeup views. I could see the marks from the diamond hone on the tool bit. Looks like you changed the lens on the camera. It's definitely for the better. That spray weld does save time to repair rather than replace a complicated machining of a replacement part. Thanks for the time to create the videos.

Hey Adam, to keep you fire mat from unraveling I think you could use some 100% silicone caulk to lock down the perimeter, use a putty knife to kinds spread it out and get it into the fibers, then trim it with some shears once it's good and set and it will stay flexible. Just a thought and not trying to be "that guy". I love your videos man, glad you are doing your own thing now. Keep it up please! I tell all of my friends about you too!

what is the hardness of the deposited metal? how would it fare compared to say original metal (would it last longer than a speed sleeve when applicable)?
@loydsa5 жыл бұрын
You select that hardness of the material you deposit by choosing the correct powder. The product catalogues give you the HRC (Rockwell hardness scale). Castolin make a very wide range, but there are other manufacturers as well to choose from.

I don't want to be That Guy (for once), but I did notice something. When you're hand-polishing, maybe run the lathe in reverse. That way, if something catches, it kicks your hands out away from the shaft, instead of (maybe) trying to pull you into the machine.

Adam - Considering the depth the seal cut into the shaft's journal, I was surprised you didn't use a hard-facing buildup powder like Stellite 6. I have a Victor Powder Torch that I use to repair swimming pool pump motor shafts that become corroded by chlorinated water that gets past the seal and attacks the steel motor shaft. In addition to wear resistance, Stellite 6 has super-good corrosion resistance as well.
@disasterprophet5 жыл бұрын
John P. Callan hi ! I do also have a Víctor powder torch, but now it is so difficult to find any powder, where do you find it ?
@jpcallan972255 жыл бұрын
@@disasterprophet When I bought the Victor torch it seemed like a good idea to lay in a supply of the various powders (lawyers were running out of asbestos companies to rob and were going after welding rod makers instead; I feared powder suppliers would go under), so I haven't bought any new powder in quite a while. I like Stoody 63TG for shaft buildup with corrosion resistance while still machinable. ESAB now owns the Stoody brand. Airgas has Stoody 63TG one pound bottles, which screw directly to the torch feed cup, for about $98. Victor VBP NO 22 Build-Up Spray Powder, not as wear resistant, but about half the price is also available from Airgas for about $55.

@JimmysTractor5 жыл бұрын
So I guess the big advantage of spray over MIG build up would be the uniformity and not having to overbuild- probably less overall heat and I'm guessing more uniform heat?
@marcellemay77215 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the main problem with mig build up is the uneven heat input which can lead to warpage. A spinning shaft is definitely one of those things that would probably not run true after mig welding on it.
@Abom795 жыл бұрын
Stroke and arc on a shaft and you’ll warp it.

Before I retired, the shop I worked at overhauling hydraulic governors sent drive shafts for the governors out to be repaired like this. Some came back with the silver metal like this and others had black filler. The black seemed much harder and I never saw any wear on them when they would come in usually a year later for another rebuild. The hydraulic governor manufacturer didn't like for us to have this done because it reduced their parts sales.
