Enjoyed seeing your Larch forest. And, I find the moments spent cleaning, etc. very peaceful, zen-like. I enjoy the time spent outdoors working on the plants. Nice walk through the snow. I am amazed that you are still getting snow, but I forget how far north you are. Living in s. FL I forget what it is like to deal with snow, but don't want to move back further north. Your bougainvillea sure is growing well. I hope it blooms this year. I would love to see it in flower. The hibiscus is growing well. It's an unconventional bonsai plant that sure looks GREAT! Those ficus are looking GREAT!

The tree looks like it has an angel sitting at the top playing a harp! Thanks for the pictures, once again I'm behind in my emails! You may have to build a small greenhouse that you can heat to keep it above -20 C over the winter. There's just not much else you can do that far north!

And Yes, we had many days and nights below -40 C this winter. I think I will build a shelter against the house. Heating a greenhouse means a lot of added electricity costs. Not sure I can afford it. There are also the camper trailers. I may be able to keep them in those if I park them so the sun comes in the larger windows. Thanks Nigel! I bet you get absolute ton of mail! Thanks for all your informative videos.

Yes, I have to keep the Bougainvillea pruned to stop it from flowering and then when I want it to flower, I let it grow. This works most of the time, but the tree looses it's shape quickly!

I have a hibiscus bonsai (Hibiscus waimeae), that I have been growing for 4.5 years now. (Its a Yamadori) I use a technique where you cut larger leaves in half or 2/3 the size, to train it shrink it's leaf size. It works pretty well, they were 5 - 6 inches and now they are around an inch and a half. After they begin to reach a desirable size cut off the half leaves. Then make sure that leaves that are more that 2 inches are removed. Its sort of oppressive tho, so I alternate yearly between letting it fill in and suppressing/wiring. hope this helps!

I just started attempting bonsai, and I've joined a local club. At our last club meet, they spoke about how the young club members can try clip and grow. How long does clip and grow take compared to growing in the garden and chopping?
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 5 жыл бұрын
Trees that grow in the ground will grow 10 X quicker than those in a bonsai pot! The ground keeps the roots at the perfect temperature and humidity levels for plants to grow. Trees in the ground will grow much more quickly than even trees in large training pots. The problem with rapid growth is that the top of the tree and the root base can quickly grow out of shape within a single season.

@@TheBonsaiZone Excellent. I'm just getting interested in Bonsai and it occurred to me these Bonsai are like little dioramas, that would be perfect environments for figurine photography. I did some searching, to see if anyone else had the same idea, and there are only a few, so I think it's something fun that people could do with their bonsai, without feeling it's already been over-done. It's sort of like fairy gardens, but different.

Nigel I have a question. If you air layer a 50 year old tree, does that mean your tree is 50 years old? Or does it mean it's as old as it has been in a pot? If someone asked me how old my tree is what would I say to them?
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 5 жыл бұрын
Good question! Some bonsai growers get very offended if you ask them the age of their tree. There is often a real age to the tree and then a perceived age of the tree. Many growers aim to make their tree look much older than it actually is. Age is something that is really hard to imitate on a bonsai tree, a really old tree has healed all it's wounds over the years, has a bark texture and appearance that cannot be imitated. The trunk, roots and the branch structure are all set in place and anyone can see that the tree not only looks old, but actually is! I like to consider the age of a bonsai as "years in training" Trees collected from nature can be fantastic and old, but it is the years that a person has worked on them that makes them a bonsai. Bonsai can turn into a contest to see who can collect the best tree from nature and then work it into a show tree.

And then the question was is this begonia the same age as the original begonia? I hope this is in this stupid question and I hope you can understand what I'm trying to say. Thanks again Nigel!

Hello Sir!! Is black soil suitable for Tropical trees bonsai???
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 5 жыл бұрын
It is better to use bonsai soil, if you can water it before it goes dry. The bonsai soil keeps the perfect humidity level around the roots and the trees do very well in this soil. Ordinary garden soil, doesn't let the roots get air and water as well and the tree usually will grow more slowly and with less health. Bonsai soil can be watered and fertilized often without fear of the roots rotting away, this really helps your trees grow.

The larch forest is looking good Nigel! What is your email? I have some American chestnuts I would like to send you to try for bonsai

I have had really bad luck with my Chestnut trees, every time I grow them, they get attacked by boring insects and die very quickly. I have decided not to grow them any more as they will attract the insects to my other trees as well. they are one of my favorite trees, but I have decided I just can'r risk growing them anymore. Thank you for the offer, I do appreciate it!

@@TheBonsaiZone I try to get "foist" every time, but it always seems like I'm driving, sleeping in the morning or putting the kid's to bed. So far my best has been second place by margin of 3 seconds. Never miss an upload though! Crazy to see earlier in the year, you had no snow and nice weather while in Alberta it was sub -30 and snow, now you got sub zero and snow while we are well into the thaw. Typical Canadian weather.

@@TheBonsaiZone that would be nice! Can't wait for that kind of weather, and well thawed ground, there are many muskeg bogs here where I live full of larch, and I want to do some yamadori so much, As I really only got into bonsai this winter and want to get some more Canadian trees into my yard (by just started I mean finally got seeds, some ficus from the local Sobeys, One pot had 6 trees in it, and the retusa I've sent pictures to you of that was given to me nearly dead and almost dried out, had 2 leaves left on it... Which I'll have to send you an update on sometime soon, just made an old terrarium into a little greenhouse for it and the seedlings from this winter)

@@TheBonsaiZone also, thanks by the way, I've always wanted to bonsai, but your videos were the inspiration I really needed to finally get started, along with my wife finally letting me grow some in the house and buying me my first batch of seeds for Christmas
