Spring Fever - Samsung Galaxy S8 & Osmo Mobile Cinematic 4K Camera test

Yesterday we got the new Samsung Galaxy S8. We were wondering if it was possible to shoot a decent film with a mobile device. Well, what do you think?

Actually have used my Note 8 for weddings and engagements. I edit through Final Cut Pro X, some people don't realize the power of these newer phones! They have some pretty amazing cameras these days.

Looks great. I also have an S8 but keep getting an screen resolution error message when trying to use on my Osmo Mobile and the DJI Go app

Well, that's bad. To be honest, I don't use the DJI Go App for filming and haven't tried it on the s8. This film was shot with the stock camera app and I'm waiting patiently for the v6 release of Filmic Pro for Android. That should be the best App for filming once finished as they are completely re-writing the video encoder. Cinema 4K also just crashed left to right on the s8

I am about to buy Osmo mobile 2 with smasung s8 plus . Is it Dji app work 4k ? how about hyperlapse quality ( 720 or 1080 ) ? And all the function work with Android ? I saw the video test with Iphone , all the functions work fine . Thanks !

Great video! I have a question. I also have the S8 and was wondering if you use the stock samsung camera app? I'm trying to get a flat video profile so I can colour grade my footage from scratch but making such a profile like that on the Samsung app only works for 1080p not 4k. Can you please let me know what settings you use? Thank you

+Christian Lionel thank you! For this video I used the stock App with all settings on auto. By the time I made the video the best bet. For a flat Color profile and proper grading I recommend FilmicPro. Currently v5 on android doesn't support it but V6 is almost there with profiles and amazing features. You should be able to get into beta like me. Give it a try. Great App!

I looked in Filmic pro but as you said it is not supported. I found an app called Cinema 4k which enables the S8 to film at 200mbps bit rate which is insane. The 4k feautre only films in 4:3 instead of 16:9 which is a shame but filming in 2k at 200mbps looks so much better than the 4k on the Samsung app which only records at around 40mbps bitrate

+Boyan Gorchev ich habe die Standard Kamera App mit allem auf Auto verwendet. Flaches Profil lässt sich leider nur bei 1080p verwenden und filmicPro und Cinema4K funktionieren leider auf dem S8 noch! nicht. Hab alles durchprobieren und war selber erstaunt mit der Stock App auf Auto die besten Ergebnisse zu erzielen.

so can you confirm that the S8 works with the dji osmo mobile? im getting the S8 soon and i cant decide between dji osmo mobile or the zhiyun smooth 2

+Robin Santos yes, it works like a charm. I was a bit afraid of the bixby button beeing in the way but it's all good. I don't have the zhiyun gimbal so I can't tell if it works as good.

BavAerials in the S7 camera app settings i can disable video stabilization, i think it should be possible in the S8 app too

You're right, Actually I had it disabled. The stuttering seems to come from the encoder.

I'm really sorry but the stock camera app works really well for me. No issues so far. What doesn't work currently are apps like FilmicPro and Cinema4K. Have you messed with the settings in the camera app? And what exactly doesn't work for you?

My App and Phone are connected but gimbal itself dose't recognize my phone mounting. It pop up "Mount your phone on the gimbal". It work well with my iphone. Thank for your reply.

How do you connect the Osmo Mobile to the phone ? I am just curious as I want to buy it and the apple store has the best price. But I am not sure if I buy it from them it will only work on Iphones or does the Osmo Mobile come with different adapters for different phones.

+OfficialG the osmo mobile is quite flexible with phone sizes. I already used the iPhone 7+ and now the galaxy S8 with it. All you need to do is balance the osmo when the phone is mounted. This is done super easy by losening a screw and extending or shortening the arm of the osmo until it sits level.

There is no electronic connection between the osmo and the phone. Only Bluetooth is used for e.g. starting and stopping recording but you don't need this as you can do everything on the phone directly.

+Badhon Ebrahim I do my basic correction & grading in FCPX with the built in Color Correction tool. For this film I used the footage from the stock camera app and a LUT called Cold War which is free as part of mLut by motionVFX which is also free. If grading needs more work we use DaVinci Resolve. You can see an example of Resolve in our Launch Trailer also on this channel.

Anybody tried with S8+? Will it work? I see huge stuttering in the video which I don't think is just due to 25fps, as I also see it in my videos when panning left-right or up-down even in 1080p60. I wonder if 3rd party camera app will not have this kind of issue.

I see this stuttering as well and I believe it's an issue with Google's video encoder. Maybe two or three weeks from now the filmic pro guys will release v6 beta of their App with a completely new written video encoder. Theses guys told me there were some serious issues with Google's own encoder in Android. Hope this will help.

What is the filmic? I wonder why Google needs SW encoder when SD chips for YEARS supported H264 and H265 encoding in HW. I just wish like ZTE Axon 7, Samsung would have allowed to select not a grandfather encoder H264 but nice looking 10-bit H265. What is the point of HDR capable screen when HDR can't be recorded or has to be squashed and smashed into 8 bits.

+Sergei Mutovkin absolutely right. You seem to know what's going on. Filmic Pro is an Android App where they are trying to write a new encoder.

I was told by an Adobe certified personnel that FilmicPro will shoot at a constant frame rate if you choose certain options like (24, or 30) on an Android. Though the audio seems like it is timed okay, I cannot pan the camera left or right without this shuttering type effect. I attribute it to variable frame rate (as the frame rate is always different) even when using FilmicPro, but then Adobe swears Premiere can handle android Filmic Pro footage that is supposed to be shot at a constant rate with this app. I bought the Samsung s8 yesterday and it's even worse. I used both phones with multiple third party apps: OpenCamera, FilmicPro, and Cinema4k. Not a single app delivers a frame rate that is my target frame rate. I can't get one smooth shot with both my Samsung phones, so I don't know what the hell people are talking about. Shot a short film (accepted to eight festivals) with an iPhone 6. Never once did I have this stuttering panning issue, which I think makes the Samsung camera unusable in a professional environment. I am so sad I got the S8, since my professional camera broke down. If anyone has any thoughts, please let me know.

Interesting find. Have you tried v6 beta of filmic pro? It has the new encoder and also flat color profiles which is amazing. Unfortunately on my s8 I can only get stable 1080p videos. Everything above that still stutters a lot but they are working on it. Should be a matter of days or weeks until they launch v6 for Android.

+Nordic Webspot no 4K in the DJI Go up unfortunately. No idea why they don't support it. I think it's stupid. I'm still waiting for filmic Pro to work properly on the S8.

BavAerials same here. Got Filmic and have to test it a bit. Not sure why but I do have issues with the S8 footage quality in some cases. especialy with shadows handling.. Feel free to look me up as Gabriel Stan on YT. Did two vlogs and just started with everything. Learning applying process. :)

Not the best color in my opinion. But in General the video is good, thanks! The color of the sky has turned very toxic and acidic, it is not real. I would advise you to upload the video in parallel without color correction, so you can see true colors, let it be two videos on the same channel, do not worry.

+PRUZHIN RU thanks for your comment. The grading is my artistic interpretation of the mood of that day. I wanted to showcase a real filmic look and feel with this film to show what's possible with a mobile phone.
