Hay - question : have you thought about putting in a sunken greenhouse ? Digging down 5 to 7 feet , retaining walls and a greenhouse roof. Our first one will only be about 3 feet deep, will use pallets wrapped in plastic for the retaining walls, cattle panels for roof with 2x4's for support and covering it with greenhouse plastic. Then using tires around the sides, filled with dirt, to help stabilize and help hold down the plastic. Hopefully next year we will do a much bigger and deeper one. Want to grow all our salad fixing's year round. God bless

Ooh! A walipini. I'm really interested in anything that can help extend the growing season and would love to have a walipini and/or solar greenhouse. I got to meet Clyde last fall, and bought three of his planners from him (2 to give away), and I certainly want to support him. As a relatively inexperienced gardner, the one complaint I have about that planner is that it lists relatively few crops and I don't always know how to fill in the blanks. I recently found the Botanical Interests catalog, which came with a pull-out sowing guide that lists many fruits, vegetables and flowers start times. They also have a wealth of information on their seed packets. They do a great job of taking some of the guess-work out for newbies like me. And their catalog is beautiful as well as informative. This year for planning purposes I'm using Clyde's guide and the Botanical Interests one in conjunction with each other.

Josh & Carolyn, a 3rd criterion I use when choosing seeds, along with what you like and what grows well in your area, is "what costs the most in the stores if you buy organic produce?" I'm going to be building ultra-high raised beds out of cedar (which is expensive) and my first priority is asparagus. My back-to-Eden garden/orchard will start with nut trees - they take a good while to produce and are expensive if purchased organic. My land has birds who plant all the wild blackberries I could wish for, and I'll be putting in Elderberries soon. I do love paste tomatoes, green beans and other beans I can dehydrate, but those will take a 2nd or 3rd priority as I build the beds and establish the perennials first, as I can buy them less expensively.

I heard you mention storage on carrots and how they can't be kept in the ground that long. I've been raising Touchon, Nantes and Chantenay carrots for over 30 years and have never picked them out to store. We do eat them throughout the warmer months but we can't eat them all. I live in eastern Colorado, northeast of Denver about 40 miles so we get some pretty heavy freezes. What I've always done is either just prior to or right after the first light frost is add about 6-8 inches of compost/straw/aged manure, whatever I can get my hands on over the top of the carrots as an insulating blanket and then throughout the winter I'll go out and dig up what we need and keep the rest covered. After the ground around the carrots gets frozen the carrots get a lot sweeter, the flavor is so much better than anything you can buy at the store it's incredible. Not sure if that will work 1000 miles north of here but it might be worth a test. When the weather starts to heat up, usually around the 1st of April. I have to go get them out of the ground or they will get soft.

Saving Heirloom seeds is an important topic. I have talked with seed companies on best ways to save seeds. They say to store seeds in the refrigerator and frankly I don't have the extra space in our one refrigerator. I can see the day when we will need a second refrigerator for seeds and such. Good if we can buy an energy efficient model. I'm told not to extract the air out of mason jars, but just place dry saved seed in the jar with powdered milk, tightly close the lid and place in a cool 40/50 degree dark place. So can we store in the basement away from light and heat and hope the seed keeps its vitality?? Thank you for your input and for your channel.

Sorry it just makes me sad as we talk to so many who fear GMOs so much they talk themselves out of trying their hand at gardening.🥺 They need to worry less about buying gmo seeds, they can't, and know more about places like Johnny's seeds stocking 40+ monsanto owned seminis seeds, like the for profit "celebrity tomato" and "cheddar cauliflower" without telling their customers... unless you call and ask. We believe "open sourced seeds" are just as important as open pollinated for our children and grabdchildrens future. Just sayin!🌱
