SPRING GROWTH. KIE KIE FRUIT AND ITS STRANGE GROWTH PATTERN. SURVIVAL FOOD FROM WILD PLANTS.

A quick, casual filming of my day walk and checking on some Kie Kie Fruit. I have been watching and waiting (for about one year) for this fruit to ripen.
Kie Kie Fruit, like most fruit, usually sprouts then grows then is eaten or dies and falls to the ground, all within one season. This batch of Kie Kie Fruit is at the end of its second season of growth and is only just ripening. What has caused the slow maturing of this fruit? The soil in this location? The lack of sun? Please let me know your ideas or share your knowledge.

Very cool Dave. I don't know how you find so much kiekie fruit, I keep an eye out for it nearly every time I'm in the bush and I've only ever seen it once. On my last trip I did actually find the white flower bracts though which was cool. Very weird patterns indeed, it's a shame the mice got to them before you did. All the best.

Finding the flower bract is a score bro. Did you have a taste? I also see a lot of KieKie but not a lot of fruit. I do a lot of walking to find them lol.

Thanks Dave for your wild food videos. I had the false impression their wasn't many wild edibles in the nz Bush. I think the early European explorers didn't find much out know what to look for, so i guess I just assumed that was that. I probably walked past countless food opportunities without realising but you have opened my eyes. I really enjoy these type of videos. Cheers mate.

Thanks Chris. I see plenty of this Kie Kie vine in the bush but trying to find the females that produce the fruit is a real challenge. In my area, Supplejack shoots and Nikau shoots are probably the most common, easy to find foods.

Hey I live in Waikato and I use to do this kind of thing a lot when I was 16 im a bit out of shape so I was planning on doing a 7 day survival challenge to get back my fitness I have limited knowledge and experience but not enough to do it on my own was wondering if you where keen on giving it a go with me only bringing a knife and flint and a sleeping mat and a light and batterys
