I agree it is "touch" gives me great repect for the old timers who used this tool lots. Thanks for leaving a reply.

I've spent time and will continue to spend time with millwrights/machinists of the Era gone by. Batteries fail when you least expect or devices fail ie human error. Point being I too have respect for the calibrated fingers that take decades to acquire. Thank you for an informative video.

Thanks for the video. I have had certain situations where the inside calipers are the only measuring that will clear obstructions to get an accurate measurement. This is definately in my opinions the hardest measuring instrument to learn because its all dependant upon "feel". When used correctly with the proper "feel" I would argue one can obtain very accurate measurements within 0.0005" or less when compared to other measuring devices such as inside micrometers.

what's the margin of error for calipers like these? it seems like there's a lot of ways to go wrong on technique, but i'm curious about how close i could get, barring major errors.
@machiningmoments11 жыл бұрын
The margin of error honestly is the operator. I know people that can accurately use these calipers to 0.001" The trick is practice and patience. These inside calipers are great for checking the size of a grooves diameter.

couldn't you just lay the ruler on top of the pipe?
@machiningmoments Жыл бұрын
Absolutely
@ironsmith97696 күн бұрын
only if you are measuring a surface which you can lay a ruler against and that surface is perpendicular to the objective measurement desired. for example imagine you need the inside diameter but the face of the cut is at a 45 degree angle. if you lay the ruler on the surface you will get a measurement up to twice as long as the actual circumference. to take that measurement you will need a square and you will need to take many measurements to get the shortest. also, if you are measuring something that has different dimensions at different depths such as is often the case with turned parts. they make digital calipers with extra deep jaws to take extra deep measurements but even then they cannot measure cavities where these can. i got some of these so that i could measure accurately the maximum width of a semi regular doughnut shape. to take the measurement with a simple ruler would have been impossible, i would have needed three squares and 4 extra hands, or have made some kind of jig. plus a set of these at 12 inches is about 1/3 the cost or less than digital calipers that could measure the same distance and still would not have solved my problem. i get issues anywhere from 6 to 20 times a year where calipers like these are better suited for the work.
