At the illawarra beekeepers September 2019 field day, we covered Spring Management of a Honey Bee Hive. This video was recorded live featuring a presentation by the Branch President, Penny Downy. Plus answers to many questions from Clem Mills, a very experienced beekeeper with some 50 years of knowledge. We then went out to the apiary where Penny goes through a beehive and explains points on Spring Management. The points covered can be found at the following chapters.

We've got cattle nearby and the bees continually go to the hoof print holes that fill when there is a overflow because the valves broken, and they seem to prefer stale water over fresh, because we have that nearby too.

Hi David. Thanks for sharing that. Yes it's not uncommon for bees to sip on water in puddles or from water that we probably wouldn't like to drink. But bees are attracted to salty water and water high in minerals so that may be your answer. 🙂

They love the water that gathers in my garden after heavy rain too, in the spots with poor drainage. I did hear Paul Stamets postulating that they are after fungi. I think he's researching fungal supplements for bees based on that behaviour.

I have a solar powered water fountain. Many insects visit it. I put a leaf floating on the surface.

Hu Michaeel. Yes a great idea to do that. Bees need and enjoy a dependable fresh water source. I do something similar with a 1m tall rough vase, with a hole in the bottom. The vase sits in a shallow pot that holds the water and used a solar pump to push water up to the vase letting water slowly trickle down the sides. The bees love it.
