In this video I show how to set up a fishing pole set up that catches the fish for you. This kind of fishing set up frees up your time to do other survival tasks. Some people may know this as a "twitch up".

Lost my Dad when I was young. I’m told he was a real good fisherman, I hope I can become as good as he was but it’s tough trying to figure it out for yourself. Thanks for making videos like these.

I've always thought that there are better things to do than waste time fishing when you are up against it. That said, there's nothing wrong with fishing while you're sleeping and I like this as a development of that idea. It's a good proposition John and I'll have to practise this one, although I'd like to have more hooks in the water to reduce the chances of breakfast escaping. Thanks for posting

I ordered mine from wallace cordage company. It is the tarred nylon twine, I like the size #15, it has a tensile strength of 120lbs. I ordered spools that are 1410 feet, and I think they are about $15 a spool. They have every size and strength you might want, But this size works well for me. And if it's not enough I use paracord. Thank you for your comments and questions, John.

Went thru the comments before adding my own. My apologies for the people who cannot seem to understand you're just offering a technique to catch fish using mostly material in your location. Guess they haven't yet figured out the difference between a TEACHING TECHNIQUE video and a regular "fishing trip" video. I for one appreciate the time you took to show this setup. I don't normally fish without my pole, but I love to try different things out for fun. Gonna try this on my next outing. Thanks brother!!!

Same theory, But with the trigger stick and having the pole bent down you get a hook set when the fish pulls on it. Thank you for your comments, John.

I have something similar to this I use for Icefishing but it called a tip down...It sets the hook once the fish starts to take the line out...Pretty neat and lets you fish more than one hole at a time...Neat idea for what you had to work with...

Looks like a big improvment over the cane poles, line & bobbers, we used as when I was a kid. Shoved the end of the pole in a river bank. Left lines out at night with hopes of finding catfish on them in the morning.

good thing you tell everyone yoyo reels are too cumbersome and your "kit" would easily hold a couple even with the stuff in the bag already. .... what a genius
@CommonSenseOutdoors
@CommonSenseOutdoors 8 жыл бұрын
+Anthony Dulin You would need to understand IMO a pack or bag is not a survival kit at all. A PSK should be compact, lightweight, preferably attached to your person, and separate from any pack or bag you may or may not also have. So, while there is room for gear or gadgets in your pack.. there is not that room for them in a good PSK. Besides, I brought some stuff out in a small bag just to show this video.. All the items I used to make this are in my True Survival Bracelet on my wrist! Can you fit a yoyo reel in your bracelet? You may be better off to be less critical of how people present things and more open to learn something new. Thank you for watching.

Good to know for sure. There are different ways that a person could fish without actually spending the time fishing, And different ways to set up this same style of spring pole. But, I like this one, because when it is tripped there is no toggle stick or anything attached to your line. Just so happens, the items I used are in my Bracelets and Keychains, John.

I've seen so many people who know only one kind of trap or one method of fishing, and that's all they try. In a real survival situation, you should try every kind of trap or fishing setup you can, because what works in one places may or may not work in another.

Great vid. The principle is very valid. I do not think there is enough length of pole whip travel to take out that much slack and set the hook. The length of the pole should be greater to allow more whip & travel. Of course everything has to be tailored for the fish. Fishing the deeper muddy rivers of the plains for cats I'd use a hedge pole 12 - 14' long set at about 60 degree. The base being around 2-1/2" and tip at 1/2". Line tied to the tip + 1/3 down from tip for safety. This would probably result in 4-5' of tip travel to pull the slack and set the hook. Also do a bipod support for the pole.

Thank you for your comments! If I were to fish like this with only what I have... I always have the items I used in this video, as they are the same items in my True Survival Bracelet! A primitive bone hook wouldn't work as well on this set up as it wouldn't have a proper barb on the hook... In other words if you left it unattended the fish would get off the hook, John.
@Robert31352

I am thinking the best way to tie the pole to the forked stick would be a shoelace knot so that when you want to pick the pole up you do not have to cut the line or pull up the forked stick. I have not read all of the comments, so I do not know if someone else mentioned this. I really liked the video and am subscribing. I saw the Kbar on your belt. If you are a Marine, Semper Fi.

@CommonSenseOutdoors
@CommonSenseOutdoors 10 жыл бұрын
I would have to re-watch what I did there to be sure... But, I am pretty sure I had about twelve feet of slack line between the trigger and hook. Even if the trigger set off before tossing the line out... there wouldn't be enough spring travel to set the hook with it still on the bank. You are correct though, safety should always be a top priority. Thank you for your comments, John.

Squeezing down with my teeth.""Just pulling back up for a second, showing in idea, where I need to do it. I have another stick, while Wyoming and I are going to take this dick! You, bush it into the ground, to a point where I can take this dick, on my swivel. Barely put it in the ground. My right underneath their GFS branches sticks out of his wife. Include bait elastic line in any survival fishing kit boys and girls, its amazing. After you got your bait on your hook, just a few loops around it with the elastic line, it will stay on for a LONG time, even multiple catches. I started using it for oolichans (Small fish) while fishing for sturgeon, the fish gets soft , and after a tug or two, it would pop right off the hook , the elastic line prevents that, will keep it on there all night.

to use a splitcaine flyrod there must be a dream. i live by a river just like this in Norway. Trysilriver. we mostly get grayling and brown trout there. you can get bas some places and huge pike other places. i even got an artic char there once. those dont live in the river, but in a lake about 55 km further up. i used to work as a fishing guide in the summer. sled dogs in the winter, and on a mountainlake i use nearly the same method as you use here. works fine. so keep up the good work. to sad most youngsters are to addicted to computer games and other stuff these days though.

Video of a fascinating and utilitarian adjunct for catching fish without having to use up time and calories monitoring the fishing rod. I can image setting up a series of these devices would be especially good in a survival setting. Video would be more viewer friendly and get more likes if everything was ready to go before filming (i.e. camera set up) and if hyper coloured fishing wire was used for the purpose of the demonstration.

You should try making it a little more simple my family has been doing something like this as far back as I can remember.We would tie the line on end of main pole and stab pole in ground then stab a 2nd pole just in front of it closer to water.Then pull main pole down to 2nd pole and make 2 small notches in them so they just hang on each other so when fish bumps pole will come lose and set hook.When doing it this way you will see that you will not have that slack or loop in string from tip of pole to hook like you do with the trigger being under your pole like you have.String will be straight out from tip of pole.

The way the stick is through the swivel, the stick will often stay in the swivel. There really was no way for it to get hung up with water 180 degree from the set. The only way to get hung with this is to pull it directly towards the stick in the ground. Thank you for your comments, John.

In many places in the world, you can dig to your heart's content and never see a single earthworm. They're not native to everywhere and the ones in the USA aren't even native to begin with. so... other options like fruit, frogs, grubs, crickets, termites, etc. are more viable in most cases.

Very cool video. Although, being a survivalists, wouldn't you keep your shoes tied securely and snuggly and not just wearing your shoes as "slip-ons"?
@CommonSenseOutdoors

These shoes fit in a manner that I could run full speed and never worry about losing a shoe with them not tied. Not trying to be argue, but if I went barefoot would that be better? By that I mean... Would you question Cody Lundin's mindset or skills for not wearing shoes at all? Thank you for your comments and question, John.

Get teaching video! Any way you could make a short one where the camera is on the set up and a fish triggers it? It would be great to see it in action. Thanks.

Thanks for a great video! However, I would really reconsider using your mouth to close those lead weights. Not healthy. Of course if they aren't made of lead, then never mind.

+Les Mack Yes, I know.. old habits die hard. I would say though there are many things we are told not to do that have been done much longer than we have lived, by people that have had long lives. Such as "don't drink from a garden hose".. Thank you for watching and for your comments.

Hey just wanted to say THANKS for the great video! had a quick question. is there a way to compensate for a stronger water current. i live near some big rivers and even the streams get moving pretty fast in the spring thaw. Can't wait to try this out this summer! Thanks again!
@CommonSenseOutdoors
@CommonSenseOutdoors 8 жыл бұрын
+Ted Peterson This is going to work best in slow current or still water. It could be done in faster current, but would require more weight and increase the chance of getting hung up or your bait ending up too close to the bank. Thank you much for your comments and question.

Is that a survival band-aid on your finger too? My feelings are that you don't rig up a fishing pole and walk away from it if you want to catch your dinner. If you do, then you are not all that hungry. Fishing is a hands-on sort of thing...I mean if you're serious about catching dinner.
@CommonSenseOutdoors
@CommonSenseOutdoors 9 жыл бұрын
+Parrot Bill If this is set in this manner it will most certainly catch the fish for you. You have to understand in a real survival situation a persons survival depends on many tasks and the time spent to sit there and fish may not be an option.. unless you would rather have a leaky shelter, un-treated water, or not enough wood piled up to get through the night? Not to mention while it fishes for you, you could easily go set 20 more traps or snares and greatly increase ones odds of eating sooner.Thank you for watching.

That's pretty cool. I'm assuming this technique would also be great for a snare?

Man I saw some pretty interesting Walmart Crawfish (craw dad) traps for the the first time at my local Walmart yesterday my first thought was BOOYAH!! Well designed too. Stake out fishing rocks no matter how you do it or where it's at or even what you're aiming at to catch. Those little traps weren't more than maybe $12 per trap. I know I'll go back and grab a few at some point. This video is a excellent (what if) video for stake out fishing no matter what nay sayers have to say. Awesome video bro. Love it!!!! And for all of you assholes who say stake out fishing can't be done above the water line.... you have no clue. This video is in a stream so I'm guessing trout ; ) the stake out works... add a gorge hook and it works all the more... Awesome video. Add a tree over hanging the stream and a toggle trigger and BOOYAH!!!! Love this video.... and for the rest of you..... you're only limited by your own knowledge.

first, if doing this, the main pole needs to be secured. second, learn one good 100% non slip knot and use it no matter what size fish you see. never know when a rogue big boy is gonna hit your hook. don't risk loosening tackle over being lazy. if your depending on this to put food on your plate, you would be mad as fuck if that knot slipped. not to mention hungry. these need to be able to be made and set in large numbers quickly, so simplify the design.
