We are remodeling a 1965 stone house and the kitchen cabinets were a shambles, broken, water damage, and it was a large room with only a few cabinets. It was going to cost a lot even if we did the work ourselves. I found 21 Amish made cabinets on Facebook that were 20 years old and the people had put in a new kitchen. I paid $400 and we fitted them in, painted them and bought counters. They are so much nicer than any from a big box store and I have 11 drawers!

After almost 35 years, our oak cabinet doors looked awful! So last October we decided to paint the cabinets as they were really well made and the entire kitchen. Took us till Dec to get it all done. The handles were so old that they were coming back in style so we cleaned them then painted them black! Same with the hinges. Bought new drawer pulls that are almost identical to the doors. Found a beautiful laminate countertop that looks like granite and the kitchen looks fresh and updated! One coat of stain blocker and two coats of paint per door, both sides!

The more I look at the handles they really just look like swirls, not G’s. Some just have a harsher swirl.

I used a beeswax refinisher last year on my cherry cabinets. I couldn't believe how well it worked! My cabinets still have some wear and tear and scratches, but it made a BIG difference.

Sometimes a refresh can be harder than a total refinish but you did a great job. I have always used liquid sander for so many projects, especially all my furniture painting.

Great job! You are inspiring me to finally tackle our kitchen cabinets, which has needed a refresh for years! In spring cleaning the pantry last week I came across the new knobs & pulls I purchased long ago! Well done, and well said. A friend went to the expence of replacing her cabinet doors. She should have stayed with her old ones they were better quality, the new ones are already peeling with the structure failing. You have chosen the right ight thing to do xxx

Fantastic!!! It looks REALLY good! You and all your home improvements have inspired me. The last few times our daughter and family came I had planned to redo my kitchen window sill. It is 40 years old, and really bad. Well they came the week before Easter. I I DID refinish it before they came!! Now my cabinets look worse. LOL. I’m thinking this summer may be the perfect time! I’m retired. We have a window available unit, so heat can’t be an excuse. And we are exploring getting a heat pump. The improved look of your cabinets really have me jazzed!!

You scared me. At first. I was afraid you were going to paint them white. I’ve always loved that warm color and design of your cabinets. They look really nice. Can’t wait to see the finished project. We’ve got that 80s oak and laminate- which we bought and installed ourselves. I don’t think I’ll have any choice but to buy new cabinet doors. We’ll see. Not quite ready for that work. Good job! 👍🏼

Thank you for another wonderful project and video! Love your kitchen! You have honed it to perfection. I have old solid kitchen cabinet boxes, but the doors were all messed up. We built boxes for the base cabinets and put them on drawer sliders, and we bought new cabinet doors. Looks like a new kitchen!

Sophia the cabinets look very good and you made a very good choice in hardware. The handles are lovely and go so well with your cabinets and counter top. I refreshed my cabinets awhile back and put black hardware on. We changed hardware 4 times in the last 30 years before I finally got some I really loved. Take care.

Hi Sophia, the cabinets came up a treat. I, too, have timber cabinetry, but the previous owners replaced the handles/nobs with small round stainless steel ones on everything in the house - obviously for resale. The hardest decision is whether to paint or restain. The cabinets have the straight sides and bottom and curve on top as the design, and there is only a skylight for daylight (no windows so it is dark and gloomy on a dreary day). I love how you are prepared to give things a go, whether you have done it before or not! This is so encouraging for the rest of us so thank you for sharing. I hope you all had a wonderful Easter. I love watching wood working and refinishing videos and to give a smooth surface between coats and avoid sanding marks, they rub a folded piece of brown paper bag on the surface. It takes away small bubbles and any unevenness due to application. Rub and dust before applying further coats.

I do like how the cabinets look. I have a feeling the color will still wear off around the handles. It's possibly the type of wood that they are made of. I have a vanity in my bathroom that I have touched up and the same thing happened again. Maybe you can put rejuvenate or varnish or something under the handles to protect the wood. I think it's called a backplate. Anyway, good job!!

YOU ARE FEARLESS. i desperately need to change the handles on my cabinets. i would really like to change the cabinet fronts as mine came with the house and there was a problem with the manufacturing. as time went areas of the wood blackened.my neighbours had the same problem. we think they were damp when they put the finish on

Sophia, I am glad you finally found out how to use the polyurethane. Most people apply it with a rag very saturated so the wood will suck up the color and then take it off with the rag. Same thing with the liquid sand. You apply it and give a little time for it to react with the wood. Sometimes the directions make things harder to do. I am doing the same project on my kitchen. Your kitchen will look very nice. God bless.
