John Sweeter fish out at Nine mile Point for Browns. I'm in Clifton Park, New York. Never heard of a mooching reel. Always use a bait casting reel and 9 ft rod when down rigger fishing. Try to find 58 degree water for best results.

Hi Shaun. Some food for thought there. Never thought of scooping up some alewives for free bait. Seems to work pretty well. Been thinking about the solunar calendar think myself. I fish for salmon on Lake Ontario out of Bronte and have noticed that the early morning "hot bite" doesn't materialize around full moon time. I believed because the fish can see to hunt at night so not so hungry in the morning when the sun comes up, but maybe there is more to it. Have downloaded the app and will be giving it a go. Also looked up the power pole light and it looks cool, but the problem is it replaces the navigation light. I thought maybe there would be a nav light on the top in addition to the spot light, but it seems not. I think they would need to add one before I could go for this as of course the nav light is mandated when out after dark. Got to try those mooching reels though - put my name in the hat please! Trolling with a mooching reel is not technically "mooching". Mooching is when you drift with either a cut plug or whole herring/anchovy working the bait up and down through the water column. No downrigger involved.
