An antique dealer once showed me how to whiten old plates and dishes that have yellowed over time like the footed plate your friend bought. Fill a plastic container with liquid hydrogen peroxide and immerse the piece. Leave it, covered, for a few days. Remove, wash and set it in the sun to dry and brighten. This works very well. It will not be truly white again but it will be much improved. Thank you for a lovely tour of the vineyards. Horses tilling the rows between the vines!
