Whopper Ploppers, Frogs, Poppers, Buzzbaits, and Walking baits are all great Spring topwater lures. Today Matt explains the signs that the topwater bite has started, where to throw the lures, and when each style is effective. He also gives key tips on retrieve, cadence, color, and gear selection.
The excitement of a topwater explosion is unlike anything else in bass fishing. Once you've had an explosive strike you can't wait for the next! Knowing when to put the time in to get those bites is the key. Is today a good day for a popper? Would you have caught more bass with a buzzbait? Matt explains explains how to choose the baits based on conditions, fish behavior, and location.
Color selection is very simple with Spring topwater. If you cover the 3 basics of white, black, and chartreuse, you're prepared for virtually any situation. It doesn't hurt to throw a natural bluegill in from time to time as well.
Below is a breakdown of the baits Matt discussed in the video as well as Matt's top choices for hook upgrades, rods, reels, and more.

Another good one you can catch on sale alot are the Heddon Chug n Spooks. Walk really well, and when you see one swirl that just missed you can just pop it in the area before going back to walking and usually get them to come back. I used one of my new EDGE Rods by Gary Loomis 754 MH moderate... it casts a mile, and after one of my bomb casts, Kaboom (2nd pop) a 5.64 got both sets of trebles....I was singing your praise and laughing as I heard and felt her jumping so far out, it was cloudy and breezy so I fought her blind 😉 🙀 I posted the photo on IG...Thanks Again...oh, I had throw the Loon Whopper Plopper, and a Rat, I love The Bubble Walker 80 😂😂😂

Best KZbin fishing channel. With this hot winter (TX) I’m starting to prepare for spring topwater (small poppers, small whopper plopper). Question... On Black Butte Res last early spring walking a frog through sparse vegetation on straight braid I set the hook on two very nice ones in 3 casts. I broke them both off at the knot and both fish swam away with the frog in their mouth. Is there something I am doing wrong tying on my frog? Used a Palomar with one extra wrap through the eye to avoid slippage. I stopped throwing it because I didnt want to lose $30-$40 in frogs. 😳

Hey Matt have a question about the bubble walker 128, what size rod are you throwing this on? Med power rod seems way to small for 1 1/4 ounce bait. Using heavy power rod but seems too much to try and get to walk right. Any suggestions what you are throwing it on? Thanks!

You know how you just end up with baits that you didn't buy and you have no idea where they came from? Or maybe it's just me but- it happens to me all the time. I fish with my brother so we're in and out of each others stuff- he has friends who come along- etc. Anyway- I ended up with this old buzz bait that has a single quad blade but it's metal- not plastic. Otherwise there's nothing remarkable about it- simple white skirt, it's that flat rubber stuff from the 80s- but it flat gets tore up man, they love it. I never understood why until I watch Tb and learned about slowing down- it's slower than the rest of my single blades and it has a unique gurgling/ squeaking sound to it. I always act like I bought it and don't want to share but- really it just showed up in my box one day and I have no idea what brand or anything- I would buy a dozen more if I did. I'm gonna send a pic to Epic Eric- he'll know what it is. If I admit to this bunch of cut throats that it just showed up in my box they'll all be trying to claim it at once cause they've seen it catch some nice bass.

I have to disagree just a little on the Buzz bait . I have fished them since child hood with and without trailers . Keeping a high rod angle and staying in contact through the cast will keep it from sinking much at all and allow you a slower retrieve speed . With that being said I prefer metal blades and a clacker. The Buzz bait and a Hildabrant Snagless Sally and 2 of my favorite top water brush pile baits .. Fish in Ga love Buzz Baits . They also work well on surface busting fish in the winter .

Three questions ... 65lb braid is what you mentioned in video ... is that what you use all the time? I have been using 15lb braid but never caught a huge bass either. Never broke line and has almost always been strong enough to pull off a snag. Maybe I need to go up on braid size? whats the earliest month you start to fish "often" and fish bite? how long do you typically stay in one area bass fishing with no bites until you move on?

If all you have tied on is a fluorocarbon leader, put some Chapstick on your lips and run the leader through them. It will float!! Research has shown bass cannot tell the difference between white and chartreuse. No sense having both or dipping white in chartreuse.

I partially disagree with the buzzbait option.I get a cheap jawbone from dick's, straighten the wire swap position on the brass ball with the flat eneded potion and drive with it out of the window and let it start to squeak like a mother and it kills in late spring and all summer into fall. I use the black and red option and also the white. other than that i always enjoy all of the information in the video. Thanks for always giving killer info on everything that anyone throws.

I felt that all of this info was extremely on point, but the only thing I would have mentioned in addition is how to deal with the strike. When you see that blow up the 1st thing you want to do is set that hook, but I have found that I will more often yank the bait out of the fish's mouth with an early hook set. I basically count to 2 and then around the that time I will feel the fish either yank or see my bait on the top of the water. That is when the hook set needs to happen. If your bait is on the top of the water just a couple of small twitches trying to keep it in the same place will generally get that fish to come back and slam it. I love everything about this channel, and tried to watch every video that y'all put out. Your information is fantastic, and very appreciated! Keep it up

So specifically when you're talking about the popper on the back spawning Flats and you have fish blowing up in the grass, and not necessarily right on the bank. Will a popper work?

What’s your guys’s favorite color for the bubble Walker 80? The 80 reminds me of a pop maxx. Another great walking bait is the mega dawg. That thing for its size walks incredibly!

Just wanted to say thanks for all the great videos. Recently ordered some Dirty Jigs TL Pitching in Go-To and caught my PB yesterday with a RI Sweet Beaver Tramp Stamp trailer. Then watched this video since I felt I was moving to fast with my top water this morning, but wasn't sure what to try till after this video. Picked up a couple Googan Hounds (only thing Scheels had on hand) and caught 3 this afternoon fishing over the grass. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge with us.

Don't know if this has been mentioned already but I use the granddaddy of poppers, the hula popper, in red and white out on open water when smallmouths are herding minnows and slashing through the schools
