Spring Walleye Fishing Progression

Today's video is all about spring walleye movements. This week we are seeing the first big warm up of the season and in coming days and weeks these fish are going to be on the move. Early in the spring we tend to find walleyes in shallow spawning locations. As the water warms we generally end up fishing the first piece of structure adjacent to these spawning locations. This video is all about where walleyes are moving to in the first warm up of the season.

Tom, do a boundary waters trip this summer, probably a 3-4 hour drive from you. Your boat would be allowed on much of snowbank lake, or you could go old school and rent a boat with no fish finder.

Working on your jigging technique & it really works. My problem is I'm in Montana and the wind is always blowing. I get a big bow in my line then its impossible to see when your jig hits bottom. How do you handle wind? Heavier jigs? Great job,keep em coming!

In michigan on the detroit river. Current is strong and high winds. What we do is troll with the current at a speed thatll allow us to vertical jig straight down and up. Then when we get downriver, drive back up river to the starting point and repeat

I have the same problem a lot too, couple things that help are lowering your rod tip all the way down the the water you start the jig lift, then you are only exposing a foot or so of line to the wind. Also position your boat so you’re upwind of your target and maybe go up in jig size. Lastly use hi visibility line like yellow or bright green.

When you find pods of fish, is there a tell tail way to know they are definitely walleyes instead of suckers? Do they group differently? Or is an underwater camera needed to be relatively sure?

Tom, looks like you have a 17-18’ tiller. I have something similar (albeit older) but am looking at a humminbird (helix 7 ice G3N) so I’m wondering what trolling motor you have on the front? What is your alternative to spot lock? How would you do this without it? A lot of us out here love your videos but it would be nice to see some alternatives for people who might not have a great setup. Fortunately I have SI and DI but no spot lock yet. How would you recommend approaching fish you see on the side scan when you do not have the instant ability to keep your boat in place?

Anchor, I would imagine. I have spot lock but I honestly think I got a very dumb unit. Granted, it is one of the older powerdrive v2 motors. It generally takes about 5 minutes for it to stabilize after hitting the anchor button. I get the sense that the newer, bigger units on the more expensive motors tend to perform better. What I try to do is drive into the wind so that any fish I see will be downwind of the boat. That makes it easier to spot lock / anchor.

@@shane1022 No problem. Another thing I do from time to time is throw it in reverse and back up with the wind. If I see a pod of fish, all I have to do is throw it in forward, move a bit, and spot lock or anchor. That is far easier than trying to turn the boat around. Now, if you buy a newer trolling motor, you can connect it to your locator and have it navigate to way points. That would be deluxe too. See pod. Set waypoint upwind of them, and have trolling motor quietly move you into position.

Great vid as always Tom. What criteria do you use to determine when the slip bonnet bite should pick up. I’ve heard you say in many videos early June but I was curious on water temp? Also, I fish a reservoir system that is very muddy- is slip bobber fishing affected greatly by that? Thanks- I know you’re a busy man keep up the great work
