Spring Works on The Bell Ranch: Reviving Tradition Part 1

Not since 1958, has a traditional chuck wagon been pulled out on The Bell Ranch. This mini-documentary follows the crew of The Ranch, and chuck wagon cook, Kent Rollins, for four weeks during spring works. Cowboys, remuda and wagon trek across the 290,100 acres of the Bell in northern New Mexico on a mission to revive tradition.

My brother and I grew up watching Wagon Train, Rawhide, and Gunsmoke. I wore my guns & holsters everywhere I went from the time I was old enough to walk. We took many vacations through the west. I am 65 now and still want to be a cowboy ! I cook with cast and love making soups in my cast pots over fire. I smile with every video I watch ! Thank you Kent & Shannon !!

You've got that right! I "worked" (or, rather, volunteered) with an enormous, black, Percheron named Star with hooves the size of giant dinner plates at a therapeutic riding place for kids. I was teaching the kids the parts of a horse and how to groom them when I noticed that one girl was far more shy and withdrawn than usual. I asked what was wrong and she said her puppy had died. We talked, one-on-one for a bit about pets and how it hurts so badly when they pass on like that, even grown ups shed tears, but we should be happy they were with us for a while. We went back to working with Star but the girl remained off to the side. For some reason, I asked if she would like to give Star a hug. She quietly said no, but a young boy jumped up and hugged Star's neck. That broke the ice and the girl did the same. That enormous, 16.5 hand horse gently laid her head all the way down the little girl's back, hugged her in close and "held" her there for a brief moment. HOW do horses sense these things? I won't say the girl was happy after that moment but she was far more at ease and relaxed. Yes, horses in general are incredible therapy and have far more savvy and awareness than most folks recognize. This particular Percheron named Star was truly a shining Star. Yes, sir. God really did good when He made horses. Thank you, Kent for your adherance to God, Country and Family. I truly love your videos.

Hello Kent, great video. my grandfather surveyed for the railroad that went through the Bell ranch and found several dinosaur relics that are now in the Smithsonian. He also cowboyed for the Bell and later on worked for his brother, (former general manager for the XIT), who had a few ranches near the Bell. Lots of stories from him as I grew up. Got to cowboy a bit with him as I grew but never did get to work the Bell. He was a bit of history around there. really enjoyed watching this.

I have wanted to own a ranch all my life. Back in the 70s when I was just out of high school I learned about the Bell ranch. I always thought that that would be the ranch that I owned but I am now 67 years old and still don't have a ranch but someday I will have one. I will never give up till I own a ranch. It may not be the Bell ranch but I will own one someday. Love everything you do Mr. Kent Rollins, you're an awesome cowboy and cook.!!!!

Grandpa Stauffer raised Percheron horses on the farm outside Humboldt, Nebraska until the advent of the tractor. Dad said they were the best pulling' horses God ever made. Kent, I'm not sure you actually have time to read these comments, but I just wanted to say Thank You. I love your videos each and everyone of them. I so miss the old cowboy and western movies/shows and your videos just gives me a little pice of that old love back again. I feel so badly when I think of all the new generations of people who will never see this kind of living in their lifetime, just sad.. I also love cooking with my cast iron outside which brings me to your cookbook. I bought your book and wanted to say that is the best all around cookbook I've ever seen. @@CowboyKentRollins and Jay Davis -- Well said, both of you. Those are my sentiments as well and that's one reason my driving speeds have slowed down now that I'm older. I now actually prefer to drive the slower back roads and see parts of the country I'd almost forgotten about. Kent, your videos extend your reach. Not only do you keep the cowboy-way alive out on the range, but you reach into the hearts and minds of countless kindred spirits. Much of the cowboy spirit is deeply in tune with the Christian spirit. Keep fanning that flame. We also need to keep praying for our country and its leaders. Whether or not we like their choices and methods, they need to know God and to know that, ultimately, He is still in command.

Kent, I've been a cook for 35 yrs, out to pasture now for the most part but have cooked for Groups as big as 450 for a benefit spaghetti feed one time and several others that were over 200. I started at Grandma and Moms elbows and like them I can start with an empty cupboard and fix a meal. I worked my way thru school working for the school cooks to pay for my lunches and then went on to a 25+ yr restaurant career. My greatest joy tho was when cooking for the Moose Lodge, the Eagles,or the V.F.W. when I'd cook the meal then be able to stand back and watch the people really tuck in and enjoy my food, chicken fried steaks,pork and kraut,spaghetti,chicken, and my favorite and biggest claim to fame Prime Rib. I really like feeding crews, I've fed two branding crews,BBQpork shoulders with fresh rolls,homemade potato and Mac salad.hawaiin BBQ beans,and the ranch owners homemade dill pickles. What fun all cooked on a portable BBQ wagon. Love your videos.

when i lived on the C ranch in west texas me and my ranch boss drove to the Bell ranch to pick up his daughter Candy Cotten she had just had a baby and lived there with her husband Ed Morris , i remember seeing a bus parked out front and she said the women would sometimes get on it and all go to town together , anyways it was back in the wild and wooly good ol days , this brings back a ton of memories

On top of being a good cook, you needed to be a wagonmaster, mule skinner, leather worker, barber, doctor and sometimes judge and father. Despite hollywood the cookie was usually older & experienced and third in command under owner & trailboss. Mules were the favored animal. This is great...I wish I could have been on this. no joke but you may need several timber bridges and wagonner airport needs tarmac runway your ranch owner might need to land his jet .I like the traditional revival but things are different we are no longer no gold diggers.
