Remember standing guard duty in the army in Pretoria and listening to Rrrrrrrrobin Alexander and the minister van middernagse sake. The only thing that kept me awake.

Ten o clock tales has me cover my head with blanket while listening. Friday night listening to squad cars in bed while eating salt n vinegar chips and a bar one chocolate and washing it all down with a Coke. Then Saturday morning hearing Lopis Pets Parade on radio while getting ready to jol in the streets on my chopper bike lol.

I lived in SA in the 80’s and enjoyed Springbok Radio I remember with great fondness a couple of comedies adapted from UK versions and in my opinion, eqach one better than the originals .. ‘The Men from the Ministry’ and ‘The Navy Lark’ I liked Taxi too, but that may have been an older programme being repeated.

Sad to think how things have changed, not all for the better, in fact most of what South Africa has become is so sad.....I live in the UK now but South Africa is part of my soul and no one can ever take this away from me...I love my country and it saddens me that due to violence I am forced to leave the country of my birth to ensure that my family can have a safe lifestyle....actually I even try to not look at old pictures of my upbringing because of the longing I have in me to go back....sad man.

Our minds developed far more, listening to for instance lux radio theater, one had to imagine every sentence spoken and sound made. You heard the sounds and dialogue and visualized it by forming images in your mind. Family huddled around the radio listening intently.

What beautiful memories and was very sad when it closed down. Thanks and what a pity that is not on the air anymore. Memories are made of this and everlasting.

Wow that was such an emotional farewell. I grew up with Springbok Radio and had just finished school about to do National Service when it all ended. As a teenager we had all switched to Capital Radio 604 because it was "cool", but that came and went. Springbok Radio is embedded in my soul, those memories will never go away. In a way its better that the Station ended in dignity and will always be remembered as such. Unlike its rival Durban station of the day, Radio Port Natal, which has evolved into the horror show that is today East Coast Radio.
