Beefsteak Tomato Growing in Soil VS Growing in Hydroponics WOW!

Hi, the thing you have to take into account is this, when you grow in hydroponics, the plants have what they want all the time, instead the plant having to look for what it needs in soil. They are so green, and like a jungle because you need to cut back on the nitrogen you are putting in. When i have been growing this way, i have find that the plants in water, well need 75% less fertilizer, but still grow 30% faster. Tomatoes taste so much sweeter, and everthing you grow can be done this way on your farm.

Holly Molly that is some huge mater plants! Nope no weeds for me.. LMBO.. Those maters in the soil are massive no doubt but when you went into the hydro house those plants are freaking awesome!!! So amazing how the hydro blows soil away hands down. The darker color maters mean they pulling more Nigerien then the one beside it. This is normal so no worries! I am so happy for you folks! This is proof that hydro is the way to grow. Thanks so much for allowing me to been a part of helping y'all get this up and running. Pat each other on the backs on a job very well done! Both 4 & 5 are stunning! One whole month's difference in age is really amazing. Since they grow & produce so quickly, you can extend your growing season I bet. If you cut a old tire rim in half with a grinder ( smaller rim ) and make a 3 or 4 deep by an inch wide to slide onto the barrel with the round side up your hose will not pinch. Used to do it for construction site dewatering wells.

Must admit I preferred the Hydroponics setup to soil - much more control over pests and soil borne diseases. You are lucky with your water. My Hydroponics setup was bought second hand and because they were on a dodgy water supply they had to have a Water Deionizer. My farm we had a waterfall on a stream - where we collected it ensured water oxygenation as well.

Thanks so much for the review. I really appreciate how you folks have taken your approach to a basic, simple level. it makes much more sense than trying to replicate what the hydro store tries to tell you which really pushes more product. Forgot to mention I run both soil (raised beds) outdoors and hydro greenhouse dutch buckets. I do both because I enjoy the outdoor garden but the hydro is a season extender for me. Next season I plan to use the slabs - I'm a much smaller operation but like the idea of slabs rather than dutch buckets - probably start with just one slab. Rather than NFT channels for strawberries, I think the slabs would be great. It's such a pain in the butt to be constantly chasing nutrient water, levels, temp, etc. I think the slabs would balance that out a bit. I already use MB for soil grown tomato fertilizer and love it but will likely adopt your barrel/pump approach and push nutrients through the drip tapes instead of just water. So thanks a bunch for the clear and simple review of your operation. I've learned a lot from you folks. Take care, God bless.

I always tell people not to worry, they'll ripen... I had a buddy that had over 100lbs on the outdoor vines and a snow storm was moving in with freezing temps for over a week. He was going to trash them because they were green. I said I'll take them and when they ripen I'll make you a bunch of sauce. I picked them all, put them in my south facing window and 2 weeks later I had less than one pound that rotted, and over 99 lbs of ripe tomatoes... Along with my toms (40+ lbs), onions, garlic, chilis, peppers, carrots, celery, and herbs from my garden, I made 120 gallons of sauce for me, my friends, and the food pantry...

The more you process food the less nutritious it is. The growing process is part of the final product. People think they can somehow improve on nature with technology. They improved the quantity at the expense of quality. My backyard Romas are really good. Central Illinois. I get around 8 or 10 pounds per plant easily without even trying hard.

It’s all about your pH. The proper range is 5.4-5.8 if you can keep it in that range with oxygenation of the water. You can set it on cruise control. Also, any nutrients, cut the recommended amount in half. The nutrients are more available to the plants therefore you don’t need to feed them as heavy. Supplement with silica as well

The darker one is the first plant of the row and takes more sun! More sun = more photosyntehsis. That's the reason why is more green than the closer plant.

Why soil grown tomatoes taste better than hydroponics. My guess is that the trace elements are lacking. For hydroponic growers who use masterblend formula, the trace elements is 4x lower than the recommended. For better results, adding amino acids would boost the flavor.

Thanks for the video. You asked why there is variation in your tomatoes. One possible reason is this… If you grew your tomatoes from seed, and the seed that you used isn’t an F1 hybrid, you always get a certain amount of variation. If you are growing F1 hybrids but the two parents weren’t fully inbred, you can also get some degree of variation. It can be difficult for breeder to fully inbreed certain parents as they get weaker and weaker with each generation of inbreeding and ideally they need to be inbred around 5-7 times to get perfectly uniform plants. Hope that helps.

Wow, I am super impressed with your crop, I am going to DIY my own hydroponic garden. of course, it will be on a much smaller scale since I live in a house with a small yard. I am so impressed with the tomato growth, I also want to plant some beefsteak, cherry tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, and zucchini. as well as sweet peppers, hydroponically maybe 1 or 2 of each plant. But I also really really want to do berries, I live in Ontario as well, and I was just curious, have you ever tried to grow strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries using the hydroponic method? Your tomatoes look fantastic and the production is unbelievable. I am growing multiple varieties in several outdoor raised beds. If I were to use your nutrient blend, how often should I apply it and in what quantity? Right now I have about 25 plants (single/double stems) in 2 beds (about 45 sf total)

I would do a blind taste test. Don’t let people know which is which. When sending out to customers make a list of which tomatoes you are sending where. Mark your box with an H or S so you know. Can’t wait to hear your results. 😁

The reason you have a dark green tomato next to a light green. Seeds are like brothers and sisters. Pheno-type is the term. If you find that you like the dark green one, take cuttings to make a few mother plants to take cuttings from.

Hi guys, do you have or consider making a video about irrigation in detail? drip needle system in the rockwool medium vs drip hoses in raised beds? I would be mostly interested in the various timings for these systems. e.g. "we run drip for 15 minutes each hours" thanks a lot! also you can show mixing the nutrient. how do you fill the barrels, just calculate the ammount of nutrients to be in line with the amount of added water?

Make sure when your tomatoes are growing you cut away the bottom leaves near the ground especially any that touch the ground. Also don't water the leaves only water at the base. Try a different spot in the garden next time as blight lives in the soil and i'd recommend removing and burning any plants that have blight straight away. Notice how they keep the base of their tomatoes tidy 4:16, helps with airflow and reduces the risk of soil slashing up at the leaves.

I really enjoy your videos. Are you running the same EC in both greenhouses. Just thinking that since you feed with every water cycle on the hydro tomatoes you may be running a lower EC. I built a backyard greenhouse to grow NFT lettuce after watching your videos. Building my second greenhouse for tomatoes now. I love the info so please keep posting. I do hate the aphids I've been getting on my Kale, Bok Choy and Arugula, need to get some lady bugs.

Wayne i am on a shallow well 65 ft and the water stinks but the PH is 8.7 and the EC is .3 Obviously i should lower the ph don but should i RO the water or just add master and nutrients from there. I am trying to start a farm and i have 78 acres of sandy loam but i have done well with hydroponics. I still make my own oak leaf mold compost but I really want to grow for market love your videos and you are my mentor!

i've done the hydroponics and the soil growing tomatoes here in oklahoma(usa). i'll tell you this,from my experience, the hydroponic tomatoes do NOT have the same flavor as the soil grown(flavor is not as good), but, i was also amazed at how fast and large the hydroponic tomatoes grow. i also did trials on cukes with the same results. my customers depend on the flavor from my produce ,so i dropped the hydroponic growing. you certainly do a lot more work than i do. you deserve a good pat on the back.

Really fascinating to see the hydroponics vs the natural. After watching your vids all winter I set up 20 tomato and 10 cuke and a variety of other things. The past two weeks have been heartbreaking as I've battled pests, diseases, and fungus here in Indiana. I have lost one by one all my squash/zukes to squash borer. Manual pollination is another pain in the arse since we have nearly zero natural pollinators. I've seen many of your videos, but can't remember if you rely solely on natural pollination or not in the green houses?

If you unscrew the hose a bit from the pump you will get some bypass and the spray coming out of the Union should stir the bucket. You would need to play with the adjustments to figure the time and/or pressure to push the water but you wouldn’t need to buy a timer
