Once again we and our VW Crafter Camper reach our limits!
Our journey through South America takes us and our VW Crafter Camper through the Andes in Peru. We want to explore the Rainbow Mountains (Vinicunca) in Peru.
From Cusco, numerous tour buses drive up to the Rainbow Mountains in Peru. However, we have chosen a completely different route for our VW Crafter camper van up to the mountains. It is a short circular route through the Andes in Peru.
And the route could hardly be more beautiful. The route leads past small villages in a picturesque landscape on a gravel road that climbs higher and higher. Our camper van struggles uphill and has real difficulties coping with the altitude. Although first gear works quite well, starting off at this altitude is quite problematic. What's more, our VW Crafter camper touches down on a stone. We panic that it's the oil pan. Luckily it was only the carrier! Still very annoying.
We find an ideal place to sleep at 4300 m and enjoy the peace and quiet, the van life and the remoteness of the Peruvian Andes. Peru is usually rather turbulent and there is something going on everywhere. But not here! And we take it all in. Vanlife at its best.
The next day, we continue up the mountains in our Crafter camper. Peru once again shows its most beautiful and wildest side. Tufts of yellow grass being devoured with relish by herds of alpacas under a blue sky. A fascinating landscape that Peru once again shows us here in South America. We are blown away.
However, the off-road track is getting worse and worse. Large holes in the ground and many passages with large stones. Dried-out riverbeds are our final enemy here. We constantly have to pass them and only make very slow progress. The trailer hitch is constantly coming loose. The route is not made for our camper. Rather for a 4x4 vehicle.
We fight our way through and arrive at the Rainbow Mountains in Peru in the evening and decide to drive up. A narrow road leads up the mountain. A very scary situation, as someone could come towards you at any time on the one lane up. We make it up well and spend the night at a parking lot at just under 4600 meters. The next morning we start our tour at sunrise and climb the Rainbow Mountain. 200 meters in altitude, which is quite a challenge. But the view is worth it! But see for yourself. Have fun!
