I'm almost 77 and been a widow 19 years. This lady is absolutely right about marriage. Your spouse absolutely has to be your very best friend in your life. Romance takes 2nd or 3rd place as you begin to focus on children and paying bills, but your friendship deepens and grows stronger with each challenge life throws at you. My husband and I met in high school and we became good friends right away. I had a crush on another guy, but then I realized he was not as much fun to be with as I was with my best friend. I began to realize that I missed seeing him when school let out for Christmas and Easter. By the time summer vacation rolled around we became more than best friends. We were going steady. This was 1964. We got married in 68 and he got drafted and went to Vietnam. Thankfully he came home safe. I got to be his wife for 36 years before he passed away from cancer. He was only 59. He was the best friend I ever had. ❤

She spoke facts without actually describing him as being uncaring about her well being and happiness (as a spouse who was also a friend would never do) and that a spouse with neglected feelings cannot raise the will to continue to pretend to be passionate about someone who they have come to realise cares only about themselves and, in truth, sees them as just a handy second class citizen in their life plan. She is older and and accepting of it as she has seen many such relationships fall apart as she was married in the days (the 60's) when teens were encouraged to get married and start a family as soon as possible and, if you were not a married woman with a child before you were 25 you were considered on the shelf. Also easy divorce for women did not come in until the late 70's before which, the woman had to lie in court that she had commtted adultery (ruining her reputation) just to be granted one if the husband was unwilling to divorce her..

Aww, so glad I saw this as well. Ever since I read that Nietzsche quote, “the cause of unhappy marriages is not the lack of love, but a lack of friendship.” It changed my view of romance forever, in the best way possible. This lady is so sweet, bless her soul.
@juttaweise
@juttaweise 3 ай бұрын
one of my favorite quotes by Nietzsche! I also like this: there would be more happy mariages if the couple would not live together! There is a well known couple in Germany. He was a catholic priest and when they were young they fell in love. As he did not want to lose his profession, they met in secret. Always in different places. They had children too, who had to be quiet about their father. One day the man had enough, he quit his church to be with his family for always. Well they got married, but it did not work out. So they divorced and he found another place to live. BUT.... they did not stop seeing each other, like in their younger years. It was really so revealing when they came on a TV program talking about their story!

@@zacharysherry2910 I am assuming you are not asking the literal meaning. Most probably, in this context she meant carrying day to day conversation in general. Yes, that is important. If one cannot talk to a person without a fight or some kind of altercation or has to be extremely careful while talking or even maintaining silence, the relationship will be difficult to maintain. Life gets really stressful. So while choosing spouse one has to think about that, but the funny thing is most people go with someone who they think they will get along. Their past influences their decisions unfortunately, not their intellect. They don't pay attention to their needs, rather they want something and keep chasing the same.

When I say to prospects that we really must be good friends, or there is no point in a relationship if we can not be, I'm often met with puzzled looks. It's the sensible way to go about a relationship. Sure, chemistry is important but not as important as respecting and liking each other.
@BlueEyedMomof378
@BlueEyedMomof378 9 ай бұрын
You're exactly right. There are any number of things that can ruin a sex life. That's especially true if you're married for 50 years. Menopause for women, and impotence for men, are just 2 examples. If you're best friends, and your like eachother there will be many forms of intimacy. Those will get you though the times when you're unable to rely on chemistry. The only thing I would add is that you have to enter a marriage with the intent to work through why hard times, or fights, that will come along. Many people, when they think of getting married, don't spare even a second to recognize that every marriage will have it's rocky times. If you aren't truly committed to weathering any, and all, storms.

🙏💖 I am a woman that suffer from attachments, I am not proud of that. How at my 64 years can learn to be and do all alone? Greu up in a toxic family, I learned not to love myself nor respect me. In my adult life, intentionally chose my partners relationships to take of me. My form to pay for their care was submission of my part. Say yes to all, of course, that made me very unhappy. I put them in high throne and lower myself. That doesn't work, at the end both parts get tired, one of taking care and I of loosing myself. Presently, I am married to a narcissist. People that can't take care of children obviosly should not and it's not selfish to not marry young and decide to not have children. It's not true that if there is a will there is a way. Life is suffering and if you don't have the means to provide for your children you absolutly should not! Then she talked about laces and how important it with a nice home. However people need to be able to afford a nice home and all don't think laces look good. So I would say and elder person that don't talk trash about young people are actually wise otherwise not!

Isn’t it amazing that the only prerequisite you had was having ‘fun’ with a man. His decency, kindness, masculinity, competency, hard work ethic, honour, standing by his word, helping others, sobriety etc all the traits that make a man solid meant utterly nothing to you. You picked him based on the most superficial, superfluous piece of crap trait you could and yet it worked out for you. Heterosexuality for men is a bloody curse. Decency and honour in a man are traits despised by wahmen yet this simp interviews wahmen like a mangy dog. When are men going to get it?

Absolutely, but sadly, in our ageist society, the elderly are treated now like burdensome imbeciles to be laughed at. There is little respect for older people now. Where society once revered their elders, the children of the elderly are now mocking their parents and can’t wait to be shut of them. Though this is not always the case for the most part society has taken a disgraceful turn in this direction. It’s sad but its true. I see it time and again in the media, but especially among my older friends who constantly complain of disrespect from their adult children.

Passion may come and go but caring/kindness, respect and admiration, if you lose that, the relationship is over. You have to be like a team and on the same team. Is crucial. People do change... that's so true. I think your chances of marital success improve if you and your spouse are on the same path so you grow and change in alignment with each other. This is more likely if your communication is strong and you spend a lot of time together. I also agree that marrying young can hurt your chances. When you're that young, it's easy to marry for the wrong reasons, or not thoroughly know the character of the person you are marrying.

@@Dancediva240 yes, it was a very cute and goofy story. Crazy enough, we are both huge Pokémon fans and we both joined Pokémon groups on Facebook in 2017. He was teaching others how to build good battling teams and I used to do graphic design for the group (of like 4k members). So one day outside of our page’s group chat he messaged me privately asking for a particular graphic banner for a post he wanted to put on the group wall. I helped him with that, later on he helped me with building Pokémon teams and then we became friends, talking about life in general. He had a crush on me first, and started lightly flirting with me after a had a particularly horrid day at work, so he thought he could cheer me up through flirting. I hadn’t noticed he was doing that til like 2 days later and I asked him outright “hey, were you flirting with me?” I was very oblivious at the time. He admitted to it but backed off saying he only did it because he wanted to cheer me up. I said, “oh, because I like you too. Now what?” 😂 And the rest is history. Mind you, it was an international relationship for a while as we lived in different countries (we met in person for the first time in 2018), but now we are legally and forever together. Not even Covid-19 kept us apart or made us give up wanting to be together. We had patience and only grew stronger as a couple. I’d say 2020 was our most trying time and we look back at it fondly now and are so thankful, as depressing as it was at the time. That’s our story of how we met.

I work in a retirement home and one of our residents recently turned 101. I overheard her telling another resident "I never wanted to get married. I didn't have a bad marriage, but I got married very young and I didn't want to be." It's kind of sad/interesting she felt that way. I always thought her and her husband (who passed away about 10 years ago) were a very sweet couple that seemed very much in love. It definitely sounded like she loved him, but (based on her words) wasn't "passionately in love" with him. But it was expected of her to get married (and stay married) so that's what she did. Edit: Some of you don't seem to understand the message here. It wasn't about her actual marriage itself. She wasn't saying she was unhappy in it. Never once have I heard her speak poorly of her late husband. Remember that this woman Is ONE HUNDRED AND ONE. Just let that sink in for a moment.... She would have gotten married in late 30's-early 40's. It was a very different time from today. It's about her likely feeling she had a lack of personal agency in her life, because of the expectations and pressures she faced at the time. Her wondering how her life might have turned out, had she been given more autonomy as a human being. Something I think many of us take for granted nowadays. This is the impression I got from being a first hand observer to her words. If you can't have empathy or understand this even a little bit then I'm not sure what to say.

Such a sweet lady. I’ll be 70 in one month. I married my best friend and we had some awful times, but underneath all that, we genuinely loved each other. We were together 33 years before he died. The last words we ever spoke to each other were “I love you Robin” and “ I love you too Timothy” and we sat looking at each other across the room for a long time. He gave me the best hugs I ever had in my life. I miss that more than anything. Those tender hugs.

Yes I choose unwisely. Even though it was bad I was adamant on staying married, but it can unbearable so I had to leave. He learn very late in life he made a mistake in treating me horribly. Can’t go back to many bad bad memories.

I would add trust to that. If you can't trust someone, stay away from them.

And you to them obviously. ❤ It's a two way street .. . something that many non-believers also miss about the Bible. It says it's a two way street. Service and commitment to one another in love.

@@sueblankenship9441Why would they be your best friend if you can't trust them???? That's a huge issue...

She nailed it. 🎯Friendship, acceptance, genuine mutual attraction and support with a sense of fun trumps all the other things we’re told. 💯💞
