Here's a tip for small bird owner : If you are making spouts for a single small bird use a metal tea bag / tea ball in a cup. Fill the ball with seeds and place the tea ball in the cup as if you were making tea. It makes it so easy and then you don't make too much. I do it every few day by soaking the seed for 12-24 hours. Then I drain them. After that I rinse them 3 times a day ( it super dry were I live most people could probably do 2 times a day ) then you just repeat until they are sprouted. I haven't had any microbial growth doing it this way because the tea ball drains super well. If you live somewhere super dry I recommend using a damp (but not dripping) paper towel over the top of the cup to keep the humidity at a good level.

I use the mason jars. When I first started I would taste them and they were so good (taste and healthwise) that my whole family is eating them. Then I started doing microgreens. Got the whole setup with rack, lights, 1020 trays, fine soil. Our favorite is sunflower seeds. Right now I have broccoli (we always have broccoli) and lentals. Easy peasy. Oh, and for sprouts, I cut up an old sheer curtain and rubber band it to the top of the jar. No more gnat problems.

I saved this video to my watch later folder because I had no time to watch it the day it came out. Well…..2 million years later I found out I had not watched it, so I did so tonight. I’ve used Humama for abt 9 weeks now thanks to you! My 30yr timneh grey is quite the picky eater and he is still not loving them. I’m cutting them up smaller and pulling them early for a smaller sprout and the little snot will will mostly eat around them. To bad for for him I’m gonna continue to offer them to him whether his like it or not! Just wondering if you’re aware *sprout-people* has a KZbin channel? Haven’t spent time in their channel as you just gave me the website tonight. You & Dave are my trusted source for all things parrot & I thank you for that. A friendly “Hello” to Capri!👋🏼

Sprouts are a great way to diet convert those seed obsessed birds. You just have to start by feeding them when they have tiny tails and still look like seeds.

This is so true, I gave my birds (a cockatiel and a budgie) a bowl of sprouts for the first time before I left for work the other day. They were all gone by the time I got home! I was shocked because I can barely get them to touch anything but seeds (especially the budgie). I just bought her natural feeding system though and hopefully I can convert them with that lol.

I actually use the Easy Sprouter from Sprout People and their Lil' Bird seed mix. Takes less than a minute morning and night. I don't grow mine very big as my birds (cockatiel and green cheek conure) eat them better when they just have tiny root tails showing, way before any leaf development. Full of nutrition but recognized as seed.

I had the same problem with my sprouts getting rancid in the "Easy Sprout" sprouter! Oh my gosh, I thought I was hopeless or something because I tried 3 times, used different seed mixes made for sprouting, but they stunk every time. But I knew that when they smelled off, they *were* off, and of course that discouraged me from feeding sprouts. However I think my birds really need them. They are grasskeets, so definitely seedaholics... I've currently got them on a bit of a "seed fast" where I removed their seeds and gave them veggies only last night, then this morning veggies again... once those had been out for a few hours I replaced the veg with fresh and added a pinch of oat groats to keep them engaged and that's working, but sprouts should be the perfect compromise

You must be reading my mind! :) Just last night, I was telling my family that I wanted to start sprouting stuff for my Hahn's -- well, not only her but for myself (and the rest of them?) as well! I have only had her a month, but the diet conversion to your pellets and seasonal feeding system has been ROUGH. Still, I have to remind myself that I am not a big fan of veggies, so we are doing this together -- and I quite enjoy different sprouts! My mission is to get healthier with her.

Hamama is amazing for microgreens... I've done sprouts in a jar, but was tired of working my schedule around them. Hamama makes it so much easier!! Regarding cilantro, don't submerge it all the way under, just hold it so the base part of the quilt is under water and the top sucks up enough to darken. That way you avoid potential mold issues (which we had the first time, but Hamama's customer service helped us for the next attempt!)

I grow sprouts for myself for the high nutrition. I use the round trays that are stacked. Everyday I run water into the top tray and it drains into the lower trays and into a reservoir on the bottom. They get covered 3-5 days until roots are showing then they get put out in a light until they get little green showing. Some sprouts are edible w/o greening. I get my seeds from Westcoast Seeds here in Canada and the sprouter from Amazon. The trays can be changed in position and some going for light before others.

Great cheap and easy way to sprout.... get a freezer bag. Put your sprouting seeds in (a teaspoon or 2 till you work out how much you need). We use mung beans and alfalfa most frequently. Soak them in water for 5 mins ~ literally add a cup of water, then tip it out. Seal bag, and rinse once a day in bag, and drain, then seal and place in a light spot at room temperature. By day 3 or 4 they will be done. Eezee!

It's been one of those days! When I saw that 'BirdTricks' had something new to learn abrout 'sprouting 101 for parrots' I though you were going to discuss information about "Parrots sprouting new feathers"! Nope, there was definitely a parrot there - but you were talking about sprouting seeds! Never mind! I like seeds, sprouts and parrots too - even though right now, I don't have parrots or sprouts - the information is useful! I know that up here on the south-west coast of Canada , we have to use extra lights to get any plants to grow in the house and the best deal is to add a cheap flourescent light fixture with two regular bulbs in it and mount it over a window. The combination of natural and artificial light means that everything green will grow well - maybe even green parrots! Comet really is sweet and I'd keep him on my window-sill any day of the year! Thanks for the information about growing sprouts too. We need something fresh for our early Spring salad.

If your doing sprouts for a single bird using a tea ball/ metal tea bag is the way to go. Just put the seed/beans in the tea ball and place it into a cup as if you were making tea. I have never had an issue with microbial growth when I use a tea ball because they are designed to drain. If you live somewhere super dry just pop a damp paper towel on the top of the cup to keep the seeds from getting dried out between rinses. All in all this process takes about 12min total each day.

@@Tbland72 Yes, peppers are apart of the nightshade family as well as tomato, egg plant and tomatillos/ground cherries. I've seen people online say that the leaves and stems are poisonous, so I wouldn't recommend giving pepper sprouts to your bird(s). Also they can take like 7-21 days to germinate. I bought 2 mason jar covers and about 10 different Mumms sprouting packages. Someone had told me how to sprout and I tried with no success. When I received the mumms packages, they came with instructions that worked. My parrots weren’t fond of them but they are coming around. Just as they are the seasonal feeding system. They don’t really like the small size, but they are all starting to eat it. I started with a tbsp and that was rejected by all. I do a tsp now per day and my fussy monsters are all starting to eat it. The mason jars are ok and they live on my counter top in a south facing window. The only problem I have is when are they ready?

So cute, good to see Comet, he clearly sees you as his favorite human. Great idea, sprouts can get really expensive. Thanks Jamie, see you soon!
