So, looking at the suspension, here's my thought: because the mugs are so light, their mass alone isn't enough make the centrifugal force affect the suspension, but the pull of gravity on them is enough to compress and expand them. The suspension can be compressed and extended with the gravity force, but as you saw when it's moving slowly, suspension at its weakest setting, with little mass on the end of it, needs time to extend. When you watch it spin slowly, the suspension stays fully compressed for a significant amount of the time. So, when it's spinning rapidly, the centrifugal force from the mugs light weight isn't enough to overcome the gravitational pull that keeps the suspension compressed when it's facing upwards, and the speed doesn't give the suspension enough time to react to the mug being pulled away from it when it's facing downwards. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk (I have no idea why I wrote this whole dissertation, I was as fascinated as Scrapman by the odd effect.

I have a possible great idea for the survival base, a ballista or catapult that fires mini bombs. It would fit well with the castle because it is medieval weaponry and if made correctly it would be very efficient in high level raids. And if you wanted to go really far you could go so far as to make a mortar. Also if you read this my cat is sitting outside say hi to cat :)
