So as it was pointed out in the comments I screwed up and thought 7 bit is 64 positions when really 7 bit gives you 128 combinations. Guess we have an extra bit now in this system we can use for addressing :P

kAN Gaming what if you programmed this for Morse code, since you are able to do patterns. (It might be impossible and if so nevermind) the difficult part would be creating a decoder, and if you are able you may have it repeate the signal (code) a couple off times. You could also create a bigger array of sensors as a type of satellite dish. And since your working with potato guns having to not have precise shots to convey data would be a lot simpler, it’s just the decoder would be difficult. And you could possibly add a short signal before connected to a tote bot like 10 seconds before the messedge is sent to notify when a signal is arriving. This is just an idea so no worries if your not able to do it

kAN I have a couple suggestions. For one you could theoretically infinitely increase the send rate by making more spuds guns that alternate which one shoots after the last time data was received. Another idea would be to rather than making a plate that is covered in sensors, make a hole with sensors detecting anything that goes through the hole; By making a hole rather than a plate you can also make the receiver more reliable because it excludes the possibility of lag or clipping issues messing up the signal, and you could make it how ever wide or tall you want as long as it is a maximum of 40 blocks in one axis (sensors at max on top and bottom, or a max of 512 if you want to edit the JSON file). Lastly I think it would be really cool to make a sort of router that could stream to multiple receivers, you should definitely do that sometime.

While i don't know any mods that can improve spudgun accuracy, but since the time that the spuds take to hit the target don't seem to change, you could have multiple guns firing simultanously at the same target. Otherwise there is error correction. A simple way to detect if a single bit has been corrupted is to send a extra parity bit, that is the XOR of the rest of the data bits and then comparing it to the XOR of the recived data bits.

Vincent L. The problem is that with 6 bits there’s only 64 possible states. Imagine a range of numbers from 0-125. We need three digits to transmit it, but those digits could carry values up to 999, even though we only use the values up to 125.

Very slick update to spudnet. Serialization makes it much more accurate, tho it does cause more signal transmission delay but that's a pretty small cost for 'perfect' accuracy.

You can add one or more parity bit to help solve inaccuracies. In most serial communications I studied use an address bit to send an address before sending the real number, then sends the data and ends with some kind of stop. Every receiver would listen, but the one with the address would actually save the data. Another way to improve it is to use a queue for each character. You could also take advantage of the 7 bits to implement the whole ASCII table. Also you're implementing an asynchronous serial transmission (needs timers), if you add a second line you could transmit synchronously (clock signal, no need for timers), you could give it a try.

There’s a mod with a 100% accuracy spudgun, and I think it’s got a 0 tick delay too so you could transmit stuff seven times faster. It’s called the sniper spudgun mod or something.

I really like the concept of the "Spudnet" and I'm happy to hear that it (sometimes) works! Although a suggestion to make the whole message process cooler was if it was more like real life. What I mean is have one central tower (called a server) and then have little messangers and receivers that transmit and recieve data to and from the server to relay messages. Hopefully that made sense. It might be a little ambitious but it was just a suggestion. Anyway, great work.

A more advanced way of doing this which would make it more like actual internet is being able to specify a receiver of your message, and then the binary code sent would have three "sections", the first of which would be just the single bit which, like you said, "wakes up" the receiver. After that would be binary code which specifies a receiver address which would aim the spud gun accordingly. Then, there would be the third section which is the actual character being sent. Great work on Spudnet by the way! :)

The issue that I've found with spud guns is that they have, as you mentioned, inaccuracy as well as slightly different travel times. When I did my single-spud-gun-internet a while back I dealt with the problem by listening for a potato in a certain interval, rather than at a specified time. If in your system the potato is a tick off it won't trigger properly, which leads to potato-packet-loss. It's cool to see someone else experiement with spud-based data transfer as well! Although your solution is a lot more elegant than mine, which is a convoluted mess. What I decided to do is go for 2 wake-up spuds at the beginning to prevent accidental triggering by stray spuds of a nearby battle or so.

If you go to a 16-bit spudnet you can implement hamming codes for some error correction for spud-packet-loss. It may help with the occasional lost spud.

to deal with spud inaccuracy, u can use relay towers that just send the received signal onward, because the farther the spud goes, the farther from its target it gets.

The intellegentia mod actually adds a more powerful spud gun which is called the flak gun. However I'm not sure if it's more accurate, but it shoots with more speed and power.

the choice to go to Serial is nice but i think sending a clock signal with the data would mean you don't need the timing circuits and you can just hook it up to a Shift Register

The only bad thing about that design is if someone is taking a daily casual stroll around the block... they might get hit with the internet... also you have to have a big hole in your house in order to get the signal-spud onto the sensor in order for it to work (realistically.) Unless you just have no walls and you live on dirt then that's fine as long as you get your friends message.

Rather than using perfect accuracy spudguns, make a repeater tower with an encoder that turns one signal into another longer signal with redundancies to account for packet loss, and then another repeater that decodes the signal, using some sort of logic system, so that the two can be used for longer distance lines.

Hey kan, (ignore my name) what you should do next is making some type of supercomputer, have two smaller computer terminals, and put the two across the map from each other and have the supercomputer like in between them, and make it so that a computer terminal send data to the supercomputer which sends out data to the other computer terminal, and since it's called a supercomputer make it be able to process words! 😆
