My father had a '53 Chieftain with the straight-8 and Hydramatic. He said that when that car was new, he had to use premium gas. The compression ratio was 7.7:1. By the late 50s, octane ratings had increased to the point where that car ran just fine on regular.

Absolutely gorgeous car. My all time favorites are the GM fastbacks from '42 through '52. Just art-deco jewels and they conveyed such a sense of solid quality throughout. I'd love to cruise in that!

I didn't see a pipe holder up on the dash. Tsk. Beautiful car. I need to put A/C in mine, that's where I was thinking to put the compressor. They make surprisingly good daily drivers, despite the fuel economy (mine averages about 11 mpg).
