Watching this with my mom when I was a little girl is why I became a criminal defense attorney. I was so excited by all of the different shots of the courtroom and the awesome music. I didn’t know exactly what Perry did but I knew I wanted to do it too. And now I’m 41 and there is nowhere I feel more comfortable than a courtroom. Thanks Perry!

This is one of those rare revivals that not only actually live up to the original but the performances of Burr and Hale were maybe even better in these movies than even the original series. They were both over sixty and were as spry and as strong in their roles as ever! While I do love William Katt as Paul Drake Jr. it is tragic that William Hopper, William Talman and Ray Collins were all dead by then and couldn't be in the movies. But their memories live on through reruns of the original series.

This TV movie began the modern era of the company currently known as Paramount Global. When spun off from CBS in 1971, Viacom operated as a syndicator of old TV programs, primarily those from CBS, especially those produced in-house by CBS. Viacom entered into producing first-run programs in 1974, but for over a decade none of their weekly series clicked with viewers, only a 1981 miniseries adaptation of East of Eden. Enter Fred Silverman and Dean Hargrove. Previously, Silverman served as the head of each of the three major networks of the time, being especially successful at ABC. Silverman formed his own production company in 1981, initially aligned with MGM/UA. In 1985, he began his partnership with Hargrove, and that year the first Perry Mason telefilm, Perry Mason Returns, aired on NBC, reviving Raymond Burr's portrayal of the attorney 19 years after the CBS series, then syndicated by Viacom, concluded. Perry Mason returns was a ratings success, and Viacom produced an additional 29 telefilms in the series through 1995. Silverman, Hargrove, and Viacom also produced another TV movie that had a variation of the Perry Mason concept, Diary of a Perfect Murder, the same TV season. This telefilm, starring Andy Griffith of another Viacom-syndicated series, The Andy Griffith Show, as Ben Matlock, was the pilot for the weekly series known as Matlock that debuted in the fall of 1986. It was around this time that Viacom was taken over by National Amusements and took over cable channels previously owned by Warner Communications, including MTV, Nickelodeon, and Showtime. Matlock was Viacom's first in-house weekly series to be a hit, and it spawned a spin-off on CBS, Jake and the Fatman, in which one of the lead actors was William Conrad, previously of Cannon which Viacom also distributed at the time. That show in turn spun off Diagnosis: Murder, starring Dick Van Dyke, of another show in the Viacom library at the time, The Dick Van Dyke Show (which is now distributed by Paul Brownstein Productions). Viacom's fast growth from the mid-1980s into the 1990s gave them the leverage to pursue an acquisition that would give them ownership of a major movie studio. In the fall of 1993, Viacom and QVC started a bidding war for Paramount Communications, which owned Paramount Pictures, and was previously known as Gulf and Western Industries. Viacom prevailed in 1994, and cemented its status as one of the major American media conglomerates. Viacom boosted the library of its Paramount division by acquiring Spelling Entertainment Group in 1999, but the next year brought Viacom its biggest acquisition yet - the original CBS Corporation, formerly known as Westinghouse Electric Corporation. This made Viacom not only the owner of its former parent, but at the time the second-largest American media conglomerate. Viacom would have some synergy troubles over the first few years of the 21st century, and thus changed its name to CBS Corporation and spun off the motion picture division of Paramount as well as the company's basic cable networks as a new Viacom. By the late 2010s, though, the landscape had changed, and thus National Amusements pursued a remerger of the media companies it controlled. After resistance from CBS head Les Moonves, who was later ousted after a sexual harassment scandal, CBS Corporation re-absorbed Viacom in December 2019 to form ViacomCBS, later renamed Paramount Global (doing business as Paramount) to reflect the importance of Paramount Pictures in its operations. None of this would have happened if Fred Silverman and Dean Hargrove hadn't come along in 1985.
@TBONE_200425 күн бұрын
Hence why I refer to the 80s and 90s Viacom as "The Big Shining V of Syndication", as in 1985, they're famous "V of Doom" watermark was given a chrome coating and "illuminated" both prime-time and syndication for a very long time. Also worth noting that The V of Steel was Viacom's longest lasting logo, despite being overwritten by the redesign in 1990 by Sumner Redstone, aka: "The Spreading Letters" or "Wigga Wigga". But yet, to this day, you can _still_ find The V of Steel on some prints of classic shows from that era.

Actually, my favorite character was Paul Drake, too. I was always annoyed that when William Katt was no longer available to play the role of Paul Drake, Jr. why didn't they simply RECAST IT? Katt did (only) NINE of the movies, you couldn't exactly say he "owned" that role. Further, I think enough time has passed that the public would accept a "new" Perry Mason. (The problem with "The New Adventures" was that they tried it TOO SOON. 7 years after the end of the original series.)

Idk, man. @@sherryhannah9262 I also found Matlock exciting to watch. He's also another lawyer who cared for finding the true guilty person and 'rescuing' the framed person. And yes, Matlock was handsome.

I was just thinking, they should make "The New Perry Mason Adventures", starring Gary Sinise. He doesn't really look like Burr, but he definitely has the right style of acting for the role. Thoughts?

Not a fan of a new Perry Mason though if they had tried a black Perry Mason in the 90's I think Howard Rollins would've been pretty good. In a weird way he and Burr favor each other in the eyes and face expressions.
