"Spun" is an energetic dance that consists of a rhythmic pattern found throughout the piece, though it changes greatly as it progresses. The work is about being tied down by the world and people, but needing to move on and escape. It is a dance that dreams about escaping its forced pattern, but in reality, it moves nowhere. At times, the piece is adamant about change, while at others, it sits back and accepts what it is. Musically, Spun focuses on using the range of the marimba and techniques to tell different stories with contrasting attitudes. The repetitive nature of it continues to build right up until the ending, where the dance discovers what it truly wishes to be.
Performed on November 12, 2024 by Robert Chapman at my senior composition recital at the Frost School of Music Newman Recital Hall.
