Theory: This is a very deep video and a high-quality animation. You can tell a lot of work and thinking make up the lore of this video. At first, it seems like Spongebob is pushed to the breaking point by his career, selling crabby patties and caring for his animal, who he rarely has time for anymore. Further analysis however proves otherwise. The section of music that plays while he is walking to his home, if you align it with the music video, focuses more on actors. I feel like this is a direct implication that SpongeBob is an actor in this internal universe. At the start of the video, there is also computer static, such as the static when a video feed is cut. He's on his way home, after a really rough day, and he left early without permission. The first two people he sees, Patrick and Squidward, he is seeing while still in the studio. These people see how he’s walking, and how he’s looking, but instead just say hello, not helping their friend in need. Mr.Crabs is actually a visualization of his boss, who because of his state he’s envisioning as a character from his act. Mr.Crabs, who is in power both in the show and in this situation, orders him to get back to work, instead of caring for this employee, like how Mr.Crabs acts. He gets home, and decides to end it all, but not before recording one last time. The sudden static camera shot, and how he’s nearly looking at the camera implies that he’s recording his death. Likely as a statement that since everyone wanted to watch the show instead of care, he would give them a show to watch. He says his final statements, which we don't hear, then walks up to the noose and finishes it all. However, instead of fading to nothing as he wanted, something else occurs... In some religions, such as Christianity, suicide is considered a sin, and you are sent to "the place below" for it. This is what we see in the film. After he finishes it all, he instead is now trapped, back on the road he walked on before. He is in an infinite loop of his darkest moment. He’s stuck, exiting the studio and walking back home, before ending it all again, and again, forever. The characters clapping is satan welcoming him to his torment, before the characters go into the sky, preparing to infinitely loop his pain. Further solidifying this ending, the music distorts and cuts at the very end, as if it's a tape reel from a movie being rewound. The end music distorting could be instead due to the character that appears at the very end, coming out the floor. The characters, and SpongeBob, had to go UP to repeat the loop because the place below is as far down as they can go. This end character, likely satan, comes up, as it's his realm. He came from the direction they were unable to go. He came to watch. To spectate. and to ensure it never ends. As for the entire music in the video, looking at the lyrics holds yet another small story. Look at these lyrics: Help me I'm getting close to the edge now - I've been treading more slowly Much more slowly Don't let me sink - Tell me Do you really believe that ignorance is bliss? He’s begging for help in his mind, but everyone is ignoring his signs, blissfully unaware. Ignorant to the truth. no one is saving him from the darkness, so he’s stuck. Forever. (I am aware the song contains some happy-like parts, but you never hear them in this animation.) The inner lore to this is astonishing for such a small film. Congrats to surreal entertainment for this amazing piece. Could I be wrong? Absolutely, it's a short video with little to go off of, but if surreal was intending for there to be an inner message, I believe it would be this.

Want a theory? Everyone but Spongebob has died, most likely of aging, while Spongebob is likely a tropical sponge with a lifespan of 200+ years. This also explains why he is able to walk through his friends, they are ghosts. After killing himself from the loneliness, his friends congratulate him for for joining them in their ascension. David Hasselhoff's corpse can also be seen, from where he drowned and fell to the bottom of the ocean in a deleted scene from the movie.

My take on the story: After a mass extinction event, everyone at Bikini Bottom was killed, and there was no food left. Spunch Bob was then forced to murder and cannibalize his friends. He soon spiraled into a deep depression recalling the screams of pain his friends let out, and the pleeds of mercy. After he murdered the other survivors, he had nobody, and couldn't keep living knowing he murdered and ate all his friends. He decided to takes his own life, where his friends spirits met him again, they all ascended, but Spunch Bob's demons did not leave him at peace, and one followed him through the Underworld to the realm above. This demon would then try to bring Spunch Bob into the Underworld.

My interpretation is that he hit the bottom and no one was there to help him, and eventually didn't end his life, but the fact that he considered it and was completely alone with it until the end left an unresolved scar on his soul. And to me, his friends clapping is a representation of how they all actually went through similar stuff themselves at some points and just went on until those episodes of their lives lost their importance, so they're welcoming him to the club of people who were once depressed and no one helped them.
