Spur-winged plovers are bold and territorial birds that are notable for arriving in New Zealand, and going from fully protected to having said protection removed 80 years after their first breeding record. I hope you enjoy.

I associate them with the coast, although I see them occasionally in my inland Australian city.

I myself associate them with farmland considering where I see them. They're generalist birds, that's for sure!

I'd always been under the impression that that call was some kind of seagull. Now I know

We've got them down here as well, so yes, you could say that, although these guys are more manageable.

Thanks so much for your consistently interesting content. I think I may now know more about New Zealand birds than my native birds!

I have plovers in my Australian school, its fun running from them. They do not have eggs but have 1 baby left, they killed their second one. When ever someone goes up to them I get excited, and I'm like "ohhhh oh oh oh OH" then when they swoop im like "OH SHIT RUN RUNNNNNN" and hide. Sometimes other birds try to grab the baby, they chase it.

That is what's typical. Birds can and will lay more or less, although nothing too big outside a given range. :)
