Training is NOT about speed it's about doing it right... You rush, you get bad results. The more you rush and get impatient and demanding, the more you need to rely on gimmicks and tools to do the same thing our ancestors could do without even so much as a saddle or bridle.

But a great trainer with a sensitive horse can achieve the 'doing it right' and the 'speed' both at the same time. Perhaps he means more about the speed of the thought process of the horse when applying a cue

@@tianafreeze I'm pretty sure what he's looking for with aggressive pain-causing aids is fast results with minimal effort. The best trainers take their time and do it right, regardless of how long it takes.

@@Popsickle24680 For sure, taking the time to do it right is important. But spurs aren't aggressive, it's the legs that they are attached to that can be. Someone could do a lot of damage even with just their legs, and someone could be very humane while wearing spurs.

@@tianafreeze If the goal of spurs is to barely use them, then why do you feel the need to use them at all? If you aren't using them forcefully, the leg provides the exact same amount of force. The only thing separating the two in this case is if you make a mistake or lose your temper, you do much more damage with a spur than your heel alone. Why people enjoy using spurs is because they get a better, faster response out of the horse - but there's a good reason for this. Though you THINK you're using them lightly, even a slight nudge can apply a ton of pressure to your horse because the surface area of a spur is so much smaller than that of an entire heel. Think about the relationships of pounds per square inch. If you apply, say 5 pounds of pressure over the entire surface area of the side of your foot, you aren't applying much pressure because the pounds per square inch is low. If you apply the SAME 5 pounds of pressure over the tiny surface area of a spur, you apply WAY more pressure. People think spurs are fine because, hey, I'm applying the exact same amount of pressure with this spur that I do with just my heel, but my horse respects it more for some reason - this is great! In reality, you're using a cheat, because you need to use your own muscles way less to apply much more pressure. You unwittingly cause pain and discomfort because if FEELS like you aren't using much pressure, when in fact the spur has become a mechanism in amplifying the pressure you use. In there lies another danger of spurs - you can't actually tell how much pressure you're really using. With your foot, the transfer of pressure from your muscles to your horse's side is almost 1:1. The transfer of muscle to spur is much greater, but you can't tell by how much. Only your horse knows. As a result, you risk injuring your horse unwittingly because though you think you're being light, the actual pressure being directed through the spur is far, far greater.
@tianafreeze
@tianafreeze 5 жыл бұрын
@@Popsickle24680 I totally agree, you have to be very mindful about the amount of pressure you're applying. No harm in not using spurs, it's up to you which aids you choose to use for training, there are lots of options!

Spurs should only be used by experienced riders who are well-balanced in the saddle. If not, they'll do a lot more harm than good. I'm not against the use of spurs, but using them correctly takes a bit of technical skill from the rider.

People think spurs are dangerous and abuse.... but really, it’s all in the moment of your feet and how well you know how to use them , you can easily abuse any thing if you don’t know how to work and use properly , like a bit . Spurs help a lot .

Stabbing and spurs are different thing I suspect you jump judging by your picture? Everyone has different ways of doing things and somtimes spurs isn't everyone's cup of tea but doesn't mean to say it's like stabbing if you know what your doing, you ain't going to make that horse bleed. If your horse is to the point it's bleeding your not experienced enough and it's time for a lesson and no set of spurs . Just like bits judging by your picture they can be terrible to the horse but IF USED correctly you will be fine long as it's the one for that horse and it fits it's mouth .

Olivia Patterson sorry but I completely disagree bc u wouldn’t like if someone was stabbing things into the side of ur ribs to make u the speed they want u to go and the horse obviously does not like it bc as u can see it is walking away as the guy tries to approach it. Personally i think most people just shouldn’t own horses bc they treat them terribly so just think for a second about how the horse would feel like , not hate but they r beings to

Annabelle Moore depends on how you train it too. Not all disciplines in riding have the same technique you can't educate an uneducated mind, And your right not all people should own horses but mine are very good in shape and has never flinched at a spur. You don't use them the whole time while riding so actually look up on your facts rather then telling me how things work my horses are not abused cause I use spurs and quite frankly horses jumping over things bigger then theirselves are abusive to many other horse people anything is abusive anymore. I don't think it because everyone has a sport . And some riders don't use it for "speed" 😂😂 they use it for correction and when a horse thinks or knows you have one it's not a sharp spur it wouldn't even be one their are many shapes and styles of spurs and even one that I actually use is a metal ball that you just simply turn your heel and it slightly nudges the horse . The people and videos you have been obviously watching are not using theirs correctly telling my opinion not trying to change your because obviously no one will change an opinion cause everyone has a write but maybe look up what a spur does and how it helps actually here is what it is used for ..... A spur is a metal tool designed to be worn in pairs on the heels of riding boots for the purpose of DIRECTING a horse or other animal to move forward or laterally while riding. It is usually used to refine the riding aids (commands) and to back up the natural aids (the leg, seat, hands, and voice). Not just jabbing the ribs.

@@oliviapatterson792 We are living in 2022, there's no reason to abuse horses like this anymore. You will pay MORE MONEY for a good horse than you will for a damn motorcycle. The price of a good riding horse right now is about 3,500 to 3,800 American dollars..... you can show up to a used motorcycle store and end up with 2 pre-owned 4wheelers for less money than that. You go out of your way, you spend EXTRA money, just so you can feel "in control" of these large beautiful animals instead of just riding a machine that does the job 100x better and does not involve the work of an animal. Even places that were FAMOUS for having horse carriage rides for the public have come to realize that it just places un-needed stress on animals for no reason other than our pleasure, and have given up the practice completely. DON'T GET ME WRONG: I'm no veggie-boy, I LOVE eating meat. I love shooting guns.... and I grew up in a place where most of my friends lived on farms. I'm proud of my American heritage....... but it's time to move on. There's absolutely no situation in which a horse will do a better job than a motorcycle or 4wheeler, and we're just using these animals for our pleasure. This country wouldn't have been built if not for the use of horses, I understand its part of our history, but some things should be left in the past (like riding horses, or slavery, or using an animal in any instance when a machine could replace it)

@@prestonwilson9393 there's absolutely no reason human beings should be riding on horseback in the year of 2022. There's ESPECIALLY no reason to ride a horse in 2022 while using equipment created in an era where an animal's wellbeing always came second to the rider/owner's comfort. Horses are MORE EXPENSIVE than MOTORCYCLES!!! There's just no reason to ride a horse anymore. Your "enjoyment" is not important enough of a reason to force a horse to carry your butt around. To actively make the choice to ride on an animal with feelings OVER riding a machine that does the job 100x better - THAT'S the cruel part. You are LITERALLY saying: "I know this 4wheeler can haul more than a horse, goes faster than a horse, go FURTHER than a horse, and can accomplish anything a horse could except with a quarter of the effort - but instead, I would rather delegate this work to a living being, a horse, even though doing so will cause discomfort at the minimum and most likely pain"

@@anonyninja7737 @Anony Ninja I've had several horses and some love being ridden and some just preferred to be pets which was fine with me. I don't think there's any issue with animals having jobs in exchange for a luxurious lifestyle with a climate controlled barn and clean water and premium food and brushing and vet care and hoof care and protection from predators and affection. I had a horse live to be 40 and had a very easy, cushy and happy life. She was my baby and I treated her better than most people treat their children. However, I think using spurs and whips is absolutely disgusting and completely unnecessary. I'm not even sure why this video was recommended to me. At the higher levels in dressage I was horrified to find out spurs are actually required. Thankfully you can use dummy spurs. I think this stupid requirement for spurs must change!
