Sputnik - 60 years on from the Start of the Space Race

That simple little beep, beep, beep was the sound that started the Space Race. It's been 60 years since they have first heard on October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1 into a low Earth orbit. It was only a metal ball, 22 inches or about 56 centimetres in diameter, with four antennae sticking out of it - but it had an impact far greater than its size. In fact, it changed the course of human history.
EDIT: a couple of mistakes on my part. Firstly the date Khrushchev said "we will bury you" was 1956 on 1965, for some reason i said 65 even though the script said 56.
Second, the pic of Dmitry Ustinov, I focused on the wrong man, it should have been the one in the bottom right which is partially cut out.

@@generalzod8589 Is our little flat earther offended by this video? I guess you are the type of people who deny what the soviets/russians did/do, but all about america is true of course. Or do you deny everything? People like you never give evidence. They just close their ears and scream "LALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU". So I don't even expect anything. Btw, the beeps were measurable on a much bigger part of the earth than a balloon could ever send. That already is enough evidence. But you will just deny it anyway. In other words, grow up. Those years in the Labour camp, when Glushko reported him because of professional envy, ruined Korelev health forever. And, when Korelev asked Glushko to design the engines of the lunar N1 rocket, Glushko refused. With 30 engines designed from Kuznetoff and an insufficient Kord, the N1 failed four times and then retired, because the US had landed on the Moon in the meantime.

Need a minor edit... The video says Khruschev said, "We will bury you" in 1965. I think you meant 1956, when he first said it while visiting Poland. By 1965, he was out of power and Leonid Brezhnev was running the show in the USSR. Other than that, good presentation.

It could be that you were thinking "1960's" because you've been wearing those totally groovy shirts from Madcap England. They just don't go with the Eisenhower era. Still in all, I've enjoyed your space presentations tremendously -- and I'm a guy who knows. As I type this, I'm reviewing the design of a gimbal motor control system that points a small rocket nozzle. And the customer is in Pasadena, CA. To date, you've done an excellent job of covering space-related material, since it's been both entertaining and technically accurate. Keep up the good work. Someday you can report on what I have sitting on my desk at the moment.

It's a somewhat misrepresented quotation. It does literally translate as "we will bury you" but it was represented as meaning "we will destroy you," where it's more "bury" in the sense of "being present at your funeral." I.e. it really means "we will outlast you." Of course that didn't happen, but...

I remember in school, in the 70's, I read about this shiny little harbinger of the space race. The Air Force was adamant about conducting the launch of our first satellite. The fireball shown in this video was the result. It was Werner VonBraun's Red Stone rocket, that brought us into the space race with Explorer 1. Those Redstones would be our first space rockets until an even larger ICBM called Atlas eventually put John Glen into orbit. The Red Stone rocket sent steely eyed Alan Sheppard into a suborbital trajectory, making him America's first Astronaut. As a kid, reading about the journey from the Mercury program, though Gemini, and finally, the awe inspiring Apollo program. I've been a firm believer in space exploration ever since. My heart still jumps up in my throat thinking about what the world has, and will accomplish above the sky. You're an intelligent content provider. I like, and subscribe to your videos.

This was well confusing for most people. It deserves some explanation. The Soviet Union "won" because they achieved more than the Americans. They did revolutionary things that Kickstarted the space age. America also "won" due to its achievement gaining more public attention. It had more views and they were real honest with their failures. But really, we have to give the golden chalice to Germany, for giving us the rocket in general. Also... Some firsts achieved by the 3! First man made object in space was a german rocket in the 1940s. a) US Air Force defines space as 50 Miles (= 80 km) above ground. b) International Aeronautical Society defines space as 100 km above ground. c) Some define space as 100 Miles (= 160 km) above ground. German rocket A4 (better known as V2-Rocket): 1) 84,5 km at 3. October 1942 2) 174,6 km at 20. June 1944 Both were ballistic flights. The sowjet Sputnik was the first satellite (orbit around the earth) at 4. October 1957. But first object in space was German Rocket made by the team of Dr. Wernher von Braun.

Imagine for a moment, if ISIS had a functional ICBM program 2 years ago, and was launching satellites into orbit just to show they could. They would have evacuated the ISS as a potential target. Be glad they had trouble operating small arms. The Soviet Union was posturing at a time when the idea of world wars was still very feasible. Nazi Germany just 20 years ago had invaded most of Europe without even signing declarations of war. These days, the US bombs a Russian air base in Syria, you know damn well they told them about it a week ahead of time. North Korea is getting uppity, you know China isn't going to side with them militarily and toss the bulk of their export economy to the wind over nothing.

That fear and paranoia is what drove them to do better than the Soviets. If someone manages to break into your neighbor's house without them knowing, do you admire how he did it or make sure he can't do it to you?
@ronschlorff7089
@ronschlorff7089 5 жыл бұрын
they used an ICBM to launch the thing, hence the "notice" at the time. No fear, no paranoia by those in charge; just resolve. Like the "terrible resolve" in WWII when Pearl Harbor was attacked. We said: "We're going to make them pay; and very dearly, for this"! And I think we did, four years later, with two "very very bright days" in Japan!!

Thanks for this well laid-out Space history video. May be worth to consider Sputnik used vacuum tube technology! Four miniature thermionic valves powered by some massive Ag-Zn battery and a mechanical voltage converter, for a total of four Watts of radio-frequency in the short wave spectrum so any ham-radio enthusiast could have listened to. A note about human exploration. Beside the Apollo program and the Moon researches, of great value to this day (showing that the Moon and the Earth have a common origin), astronaut visits have been limited to Earth orbit, for commercial research purposes. I can't figure out why there is no permanent base on the Moon, other than it would be very expensive, and the international cooperation effort that gave birth to the ISS, is hard to extend further. In the 70 I tought that I could one day see Earth from orbit, or from the Moon, as a tourist, but now this perspective has clearly faded. Again, thank you Mr. Shiilito for the excellent work.

Great video! Btw, speaking of Boris Chertok - he wrote an excellent book (4, actually, entire series) about history of USSR's space, from it's very beginning - the end of WW II - to the end of 1990s. It's called "Rockets and People", and incredibly interesting to read.

Just as an aside, a whole fleet of suburban electric trains, the 1955 type, here in Sydney, Australia were given the unofficial tittle of "Sputniks". The name arose due to the train set having set ID plates or "targets" with an "S" prefix, I.e. S10 etc.

My mother (who was a child when Sputnik was launched) said people thought Sputnik had machine guns on it, and it could kill you from space! I don't know how common that idea was (it may have been local to her), but given the way hysteria works, it could have been much worse...

I think it's worth mentioning that without the German Engineers that were forced to colaborate with them after WWII, neither the CCCP/USSR/Russia or the USA would have even come remotely close to sending something or someone into space. It was GERMAN Scientists and Engineers who paved the way for space exploration.

you should read about Konstantin Tsiolkovsky and soviet space program before make statements "neither the CCCP/USSR/Russia or the USA would have even come remotely close to sending something or someone into space." but yes germans have made a big impact on rocket development. also, as i know, soviets would be glad to take german scientists and engineers but by the time they get to rocket factories they were already captured by u.s.

Every space video has the German advocates in the comment section. Sure, the victors of WWII rehired the available German scientists. But they couldn't hire many of the Jewish scientist that the Germans had used because they were dead. Then, even after all those German guys had died of old age, modern German advocates (usually German descendants who want to preserve some lost pride) claim all the accomplishments of the Russian and American programs came from the Germans. One question: If the Germans were so techno-cool, why did they lose?
@KRAFTWERK2K6
@KRAFTWERK2K6 6 жыл бұрын
Simple answer: because you naturally lose when you attack Russia, one of the biggest countries, and expect to survive THAT. That being said the sovjets defeated 90% of the german forces, while the americans, french and british merely defeated the rest of them. So yeah, all this technology didn't prevent losing from a huge mistake that was made earlier.
@ianh6760
@ianh6760 6 жыл бұрын
KRAFTWERK2K6 Yeah, they started it. You act like that these German scientist did EVERYTHING in the space race. That may be true for the US side, but not for the soviets side. Each country made a huge contribution to the space race as well without the German scientists. Stop with your bias please. Thank you.
