On 4 October 1957, the Soviet Union launched the first ever man-made Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, into a low Earth orbit. A landmark achievement in the history of human technological progress, the launch of Sputnik 1 gave the so-called Space Race between the United States and the USSR a new level of importance and urgency.
A day after its launch, ITN's Neville Clarke asked the British public for their thoughts on the news. Despite his best efforts to explore the possible Cold War security implications of the satellite's launch, most people were simply thrilled by the technological achievement. One or two, however, didn't care at all!
