The PM3 is a fine example of the cult of the lanyard run amok . Lanyards have their place on a bush knife , but on an edc folder they're not needed , except by people who want to accessorise with fancy beads and knotted paracord . which is fine , but the rest of us are stuck with fugly holes in our handle scales , or messed up clip positions . Rant over , lol .

The Para 3's, alas, is a particularly unattractive and hard to "unsee" example of fugly, IMO. [Second-hand Para 3 on the way here, FWIW.]

I use those for short runs of paracord to make it MUCH easier/quicker to pull from a pocket. And since I'm doing that - yeah I add a nice bead - but it is far from an affectation. Speaking of affectation, as Cedric said it's a practical user knife so those who use the hole are in this camp so why don't you get that foo-foo, pocket whore fancy-man's knife from Kizer he had on the table. :)

Following the nomenclature progression, the next knife will be called “P4”. I hope this frees up your considerable energy to accomplish other things. Thanks for another great knife review. I’m still hanging on to my blurple PM2 in deference to my limited knife budget.

My most recent Golden Colorado Spydercos are a Para 3 in S110V, a Shaman and a basic Manix 2. Normally, I'm more into bigger knives but among the three, my favorite by a long shot is the Para 3. I don't know. I guess that's knife maturity. By the way, I already have a basic Para 3 with black scales and satin S30V blade steel. That was my very first Spyderco.

You "Sold" me this knife. I watched this review, next knife deal I did came with the Para3 as an option (S30V) and I jumped on it. I love it. So much so I'm going to pick up one in S110V. I don't like the "Burple", scales so I'll just swop with the black ones I have now and move the S30V one on with the "Burple" scales. Great review & very helpful. P.S i don't use the clip at all, I have a paracord lanyard and just pull out the pocket like that, simples.

Nice review, thanks, the Para 3 really caught my attention lately - just like the looks and keep hearing about how great the ergos are. You mentioned in the other video where you compared it to Sage 5, that the S110V is more tough than the S30V, that surprised me a little. Now one can get the Para 3 in Maxamet - would you pick it over the S110V? With a little tongue in cheek (and from a perspective kitchen knife enthusiast) - that onion cutting was a very good way to show that this knife is was not designed for kitchen task :p

The funny thing is... My original Paramilitary is smaller than the Para 2, then they reversed size and went even smaller with the Para 3. I think I use the original one the most because it just lives in the garage and I use it for cardboard.

What's the pecker in the background? (sound that is ;)) Anyway, have a pretty much 1-1 match of this para 3 as a PM2, and while it's a good knife, every time I open it, I'm disappointed that there isn't any more blade or less handle. And honestly the compression lock vs. the axis lock, for usage the compression is years behind.

Sal Glesser made a comment on the spyderco forums that the lanyard tube meets two things for the knife (going off my best memory) : providing lanyard people with a place for it, and more importantly it's integral to the structural strength and stability of the knife.

I hope it is. I have a second hand example on the way as I write. The goodness will have to overcome some rather uninspired design choices. But I felt I wanted to experience the compression lock thing. As an explicitly not-complementary model to the Paramilitary 2 or an extension of that lineage, the Para 3 really should have made some defining statement for itself. But as one reviewer/ commenter suggested, the Para 3 may be less than the sum of its parts (alluding, I would assume, to peoples' expectations and anticipation). Or, you could look at it as a collection of well-tried, off the shelf design elements, yielding, in the aggregate, a "good knife", as you suggest. Glass half empty, glass half full. Take your pick. Anyway, I put my money on the line behind that opinion. And, I already own 4-6 "good knives" from Spyderco, the number depending on the "likely stayings" and the "likely goings" at this juncture. We'll see how things work out in due time with the P3.

Great review. I actually prefer the Para 3 to the PM2 (gasp!)! You don't lose much edge for the more compact package and the ergos are much better. The Sage 5 does a couple of things better (blade thickness and clip/lanyard design) but the P3 will offer lots of options you can't get in the Sage line. I will say that the Compression lock is a bit more than a reverse liner lock. The liner wedges between the blade tang and the anvil pin making it a much stronger and more stable lock than your standard liner lock. Can't wait to see what you think of the Sage 5!
@johnaugustin5447
@johnaugustin5447 5 жыл бұрын
I agree. I like the ergos better on the Para 3 myself. I also think its the perfect size for an EDC knife. I got mine from you guys and its my current favorite folder. And to be honest the clip doesn't bother me at all. I actually like that it sticks up out of the pocket a bit. Gives me better purchase on it when I reply it. I actually dont like deep carry pocket clips for that reason.

As a camper and amateur cook I prefer the Paramilitary 2 as you need this extra length. The para 3 does the job well but not as good as the pm2. The blade of the para 3 is too short imho.
