Mr gideon did you know you got two slots on the back of the sharpmaker where you can use your 2 stones as a regular whet stone... just turn it over on its back ;) you only need the top cover which i didnt see in your vid for a steady base, i hope you still have it ... that one slot on the side is for scissors... one quick tip be carefull for a rounded tip when you do it fast ( it happend to me ).. i like to stop before the tip when i use the sharp side, and when i use the flat i make sure the tip stays on the stone for finishing touch... greets...

I have the original version of this sharpener from about 20 years ago, but I've been looking to get this one as the original only has one angle and the "stone" slot. You did forget to mention the Dart / Fish Hook grooves which are on the new and old versions. I have taken one of each rod and put them in my back packs for field touch-up and also carry a strop in case I need it. Thanks again for the great vidz! Good Luck and Godspeed, danofiremano

Be careful with the tip on the angled sharpening. It is easy to round it. Flats work better for non-recurve and flat edge knives. Get the ultra fine stones for a whole other level of sharp/honed.

good review; however, you will round off your top doing it that way. better to go slower (if you have to) and stop before the edge runs off

My kershaw blur in s30v is the only knife I've bought that wasn't razor sharp out of the box. Using all four sets of rods, diamond, medium, fine, and ultra fine it took me about four half hour sessions using the 40 degree angle to get it razor sharp. I find that with all my knives the 40 degree gets them sharper than the 30 degree. I always finish with a preloaded strop. Maybe my technique is off but for all my other knives I haven't had to spend that much time. The blur couldn't even cut printer paper when I got it. Now I can shave the hair on my arm right off.

I have this system a long time came with a video instead of dvd hahha . I am not using it anymore but its a awsome startting way to keep ya knife's sharp, Must say first time you sharpen ya knife can take little longer because factory edge can be slightly different than the 20 or 30 degree angle of the sharp maker. The stones i still use for working on serrated edges ect . Btw if anyone wanna learn free hand sharpening those rods are nice also. you keep your knife with the edge up (like the wicked edge sharpening system)and take 1 rod set it on a 15 to 30 degree angle and move the rod down and forward towards the edge (watch ya hands) overlapping each stroke works nice. I have the benchstones now and can recommend them !.but must say buy the medium and fine stones and don't buy the ultrafine(rods or benchstone) i get a better result medium, fine, leather strop they are shaven sharp (verry smooth edge)

I carry this in my hiking system and bug out bag. I use the Wicked Edge System at home and carry a strop in my EDC. Needless to say my knives are always absolutely disgustingly sharp

Alright you sold me, getting one right now lol lots of good reviews on this, I don't have a sharpener at all right now and the part that got me most was, sharpening my Becker BK9 on a medium sized stone could be a pain in the arse, plus I would need to cut out a wedge for the right angle to start the blade out on (handy tip for ease), and I don't own tools that can create that wedge guide for me lol

Does the notch where you can put the stone horizontal work well for sharpening scandi blades or would you recommend something else for them?

the sharpmaker does produce a very good edge and is very quick to use. it's a great system, especially for maintaining an edge. however, for a super dull edge or reprofiling, i've invested in a wicked edge system. the sharpmaker is always great to have and is the best value for the price. you did mention the edge pro apex and though the wicked edge is more expensive, jdavis882 asserts that the wicked edge more consistently produces a sharper edge in a 16+ minute comparison vid.

The wicked edge or the edge pro will be my next knife sharpening system I buy in the future.

If you want to use the Sharpmaker to sharpen a very dull edge you have to spring for the diamond stones. They aren't cheap at all, but they do work quite well.

How would I do my ESEE 5 on there? Do I have to angle it? Or just put against and go?

Jeremy Sampliner The Spyderco does a good job maintaining the edge. But for chips or rolls I would use a stone.
