When Thomas was talking about a "matchbox", does he mean the matchbox cars all us boys liked to play with as kids ? Or did he actually mean boxes of matches ? When he talked about matchbox catalogs I was sure it was a matchbox toy catalog yes ?

Thomas is talking about the Matchbox cars. These were only available in the East German Intershops where you had to use hard currency such as dollars our deutsch marks.

Interesting stuff. Listening to him talking about military training reminded me of a Hungarian chef I knew, He said they would train to put on a show for the Russian officers, then the Russians would leave early having ticked whatever boxes, presumably with some bottles from the Magyar comrades. Then they would have music and a bonfire and get drunk. The same guy said his uncle was a conscripted P.O.W in WW2. He was released in 58 and had to walk home from Siberia, nearly getting murdered several times on the way (poor bastard).
