There were actually a lot of music issues in this game. There were a lot more songs but they originally didn't appear in the game. They were fixed in the Greatest Hits release in America but not the Platinum release.

The level design and enemy themes is what made this one my favourite of the three spyro games. As a kid, I found myself day dreaming about different variations on the enemies and worlds. I had a similar experience with the manual for spyro 1 that explained the home worlds and the different type of dragons. Things like that did it for me as a kid.

As much as I love this game because of how adventurous it is to play, and how much it takes me back, I do agree a lot with some of the things you said. I agreed vastly with what you said about Sgt Byrd being hard to control, and his parts in levels sucking. I also don't like playing as the extra characters. I mean Shield is okay I suppose, but all those added on challenges on the levels are so frustrating, and like you said are not that fun.

You've cut me deep, Jak. You've cut me real deep. I don't know if I'll ever be able to trust again after this betrayal... But seriously, I think you did a good job of being fair with this game. They kept the basic formula of Spyro 2, but they made a crazy amount of additions, and I can totally see how the ridiculous amount of vehicles and very different playstyles of the five extra characters could annoy the hell out of someone. I know Bently's boxing section in particular really pissed people off. I'm just lucky I've got a gigantic pair of rose-tinted nostalgia goggles to slip on so that I can enjoy this game without thinking about the stuff it didn't get right. Nostalgia: gaming's band-aid! But the skateboard levels can suck my flacid willy. Freakin' skateboarding over the lizards, man... Excellent job, Jak. Keep up the great work!

You mentioned about the music being the same and yes that's a Region thing. In America, there were two Editions. The Regular Edition and Greatest Hits Edition (Platinum Edition in your country) and the Regular Edition was slightly rushed. A couple cut-scenes were missing AND some of the music was repeated. This was the same as the PAL Version. However in America, the second release (aka Greatest Hits Version) fixed all of these issues and all the speedways have different music and the Evening Lake World has an absolutely beautiful theme! (You can listen to it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z52pk6NmnM2sr6c.) However I read that on the Platinum Edition for European Countries, while the cut-scenes were added back, the music was not changed which is something nobody can figure out. I'm not sure if SCEE had something to do with this or not but that is the whole back-story behind it. Hope this helps :)

While I understand the criticisms, I can't agree with this review. As someone who's losing interest in platformers and games altogether, this is one of the few games I would still play either on travel or if I'm just plain bored and still enjoy it. I've played these Spyro games since childhood and I can say the original and Ripto's Rage don't age well for me. I get the appeal with the second game but honestly it's become a product of its time for me and nothing short of a time-waster (same can be said for the original but even less). I enjoy Year of the Dragon more not because it has more content but because it pretty much tops the previous games in everything else. Better music, more charming and adorable characters, more creative levels, way more threatening enemies (mainly talking about the bosses with that one) and overall, it just feels more like an engaging game. Sure, Ripto's Rage had the better finale I'll give you that and I wouldn't call YOTD perfect either (some minigames were total annoyance) but even with all its flaws and even if its bloated with too much, I would still argue it has aged the best of the three games. I suppose that's just me though.

No game is flawless, but to me the greatness I think of about this game outshines the bad parts so easily it's hard for me to not praise it. That's my really biased opinion anyways. (and I really loved the skateboarding sections, I actually spent alot of time just skating around, haha!)

Yeah I kind of wished I could own the Greatest hits Copy of the game but that was only released in America. That version of the game had a separate soundtrack for each level, but for the other versions the soundtracks are just re-used from the first homeworld in world 4 and also the third homeworld.

yep, this is the game i played the shit out of. Id play it again too if i had the chance... Honestly, i havent played that game in like 9 or 10 years and i still remember the submarine levels and the bunny turning into the spiky monster. I guess its really all about how you perceived it growing up. How the level design is based on the time of day, the sparx levels were... decent.. it was cool. there are definately better games out there but to be fair id still give it an 8 out of 10 for its time

ok. it's not as good as 2, i'll give you that but to say you'd give it a 4/10 personally and that you can't stand it, I just don't understand where you're coming from. these are my arguments on your points': (sorry this got a bit long but I wanted to reply to most of your points) 2:15 - seeing the Sorceress being a complete bitch to Bianca while having Bianca look up to her and want to be her while then having Bianca interact with Spyro and be a bitch to him always made me think the Sorceress must be a fucking boss to keep Bianca in her place especially since Bianca was such a bitchy person to Spyro. Having the Sorceress meet Spyro would of also put her on the same level as Spyro (if that makes sense) which would of taken away from her evil, dominating personality, to have her be see in the cut scenes with Bianca while not having Spyro there always made me more determined to finally get to her and kick her ass. I actually think it's a step up from Ripto in Spyro 2 as Ripto's always only a few cut scenes away from seeing Spyro which made me care slightly less about seeing him in the final show down because Spyro had already spoke to him so many times before. 2:33 - why is more things to do giving it more game play a bad thing? If you don't want to collect things then the Spyro series isn't for you, I'd understand if it was hundred upon hundreds but 150 isn't that much of a crazy number. 2:43 - I think showing you what the egg looks like and how to interact with it before you properly start the game is a good thing as being a first time player you could quite honestly mistake an egg for a rock or something and not approach it (for people that grew up with this game that may sound dumb but this could of happened) and besides, why is giving you an easy egg at the start a bad thing anyway? It doesn't do anything negative, why would you even mention it? 4:14 - this is my main grudge with you're video. Why do vehicles and multiple playable characters instantly make it bad? The vehicles... well for the most part I'll give yo the vehicles but the multiple characters are not a bad thing, they are a great change of pace from Spyro and allows the creators expand what they can do in the game without changing established facts about Spyro. Oh, and I might be completely alone in this (I don't know) but I fucking loved the alternative characters. 6:11 - you make it sound like you're constantly changing between each character. You play as each character ONCE! (except Sparx) ONCE!! that's not comparable to having five other reviews since they'd only be there 2 minutes. 7:21 - I can't really argue with you on this because this is entirely down to opinion but I found the large majority of the tasks very enjoyable and just the right amount of difficulty (most of the time). 7:48 - NO! I'm not having that! How can you say the skateboarding wasn't fun? Just because it's skateboarding doesn't mean it wants to be Tony Hawk or be "kizzidy-kool". And to say the controls were shit... There are dozens if not hundreds of games entirely focused on skateboarding that couldn't come close to the good controls on Spyro 3, the environment surrounding the controls didn't always fit them well but the actual controls are completely fine. 9:13 - ok, I some what agree with you about the character development but to create 3 new characters to stay in the game from the beginning 'til their boss fight, make them interesting and give them plenty of dialogue and screen time to make them a worthy villain is just too much work for a simple Spyro game. This would mean many more cut scenes (that you're obviously a fan of), less game play and would most timely take away from Bianca development as they would most likely taught Spyro within each world (and I enjoyed Bianca) 9:37 - I found the fights far more interesting than Spyro 2, but I guess that's just me. Everything I missed I most likely agreed with. Jak, you said at the start of the video you were gonna make an unbiased review but to be honest it looks like you obviously didn't enjoy this game and you were just ranting about it for 13 minutes, you barely mentioned any of the good bits and you didn't consider that some of the things you hated other people, such as myself, might like. Jak, I really like your videos, you're a really funny guy but I don't think this review was very fair even if it is still just your opinion.

To make these videos entertaining as they're designed to be primarily a form of entertainment and a legit review second. Sometimes to get the entertainment side, you have to exaggerate a bit while I do stand by a lot of the things I said. I know this is a good game, that's why I gave it a 7. people look at a 7 and seem to think that it's an average score when really, it's a great score in the grand scheme of things. But sometimes, I don't explain things well wnough so here we go: 1- You're argument about the Sorceress is an opinion/personal preference argument, however I see your views and can somewhat agree with them. 2- I wasn't complaining about 150 eggs, I like that there is plenty of stuff to do. 3- My problem here is one of exaggeration, I understand what you're saying but it's kind of kills Bianca's character when she seems to think she's hidden them in impossible locations. It's honestly a nitpick thing :P 4- You gave me the vehicles so I'll explain multiple characters. I have nothing against extra characters, but they all have to be as spot on as Spyro in all departments: Controls, gameplay and personality. If you can't do that for all of them then it's bad. 5- In a way, you kind of are constantly changing character. Majority of levels have a challenge area that involves one of these characters. Continuing from point 4, multiple playable characters should see you be able to use each character in the main levels to use their abilities. That would have made the game so much more creative and interesting to play, figuring out which character to use to collect certain eggs. 6-This argument is a personal argument. 7-This comes back to vehicles, I have nothing wrong with them but they need to be spot on. The controls for the skateboard IN MY OPINION are not spot on. Of course I'm going to make the comparison to Tony Hawk because that was a big deal at the time this game was released. The kiddy-kool stuff was to be entertaining for the video while I still somewhat feel like that was their goal with the skateboard parts. 8- I can actually see your point here BUT look Spyro 2, we saw all of our bosses in the opening cutscene. While we saw Ripto elsewhere, we didn't really see Crush and Gulp. We knew that we were eventually going to fight them and it was exciting, without cutscenes to build them up. Start of the game and they were already established bad guys. 9- Personal Opinion I can see this is a good game but honestly, I don't know the main reason I don't like this game. Since the first time I put it in my PlayStation, I've never been able to enjoy it. While I can back some things up, others I really can't. It's all just personal stuff :P Thanks for the comment, if you ever leave one this long again you'll be in trouble ;)

I just didn't give a Shit about rhynocs being the main enemies, and I could control the vehicles fine. But the Sorceress surviving the lava and no interaction between her and Spyro does piss me off. When I finally got to fight her after getting 100 eggs and I see her hand climb out of the lava, I just went to fight her again only to get the same fucking Cutscene. Then my cousin tells me to get all the gems and eggs. R U FUCKING KIDDING ME !?!?!?!? She loved this game as a kid too. Aside from that, Spyro 2 and 3 were my personal favorites in the series. Square Eyed Jak I respect your opinion on the name, Jak. I mean it doesn't bother me as much as stuff like Contra being changed to Probotector. Also why the fuck do us in PAL regions not get coloured N64 carts?!? I mean yeah we get Turok 2 which is black and Majora's Mask which is gold but NTSC regions get fucking blue and yellow carts. Sorry for changing the subject :/

While I liked this game, I can agree that not having the level intros and outros was a step back, since it showed these worlds had life to them apart from just having them stand around, doing nothing. And besides that skating mini-game in the final treasure level, one I hated was the boxing mini-game with Bentley, since there was a serious delay between pushing an attack button and Bentley attacking, which made getting the skill point seriously difficult.

This was the first Spyro game I ever owned and played :D It's what made me into a gamer, it's also my favourite out of the Spyro trilogy, mainly because it was the first one I ever played at 7 years old, so a bit biased. Nevertheless I still love it to this day, it's a classic from my childhood which has barely aged and still plays amazingly ;) Damn, I can't actually believe it was 10 years ago that I picked up this game

8:47 Actually, originally, all of the music was different. Im guessing maybe you were playing the crappy version i have now (i used to have the good version) but all the speedway musics used to be different and where most of the music is reused, there used to be entirely different music.

Yep! Music is a PAL issue. Also ablack label issue. ONLY the greatest hits version is correct. All speedways have thier own music ETC. Go look some up,it's some of his finest work even if the game is so-so

Regarding the criticism of no intro or outro cutscenes for each level, I think it was much harder for Insomniac to implement in this game. They would have to include the characters linked to Spyro and also the characters linked to a critter. If they only focused on Spyro's gameplay characters, it would make the critters look unimportant.
