Amazing video! THE best educational video I have ever seen on KZbin. Short, simple, and straight to the point, Thank you, Alice! As someone with ADHD, it's hard to find videos where there isn't a lot going on the screen to distract me from the message, or the explanations aren't clear, or instructors are trying so hard to make sure viewers understand they start overexplaining and talking in circles. Even if I rewind and listen over and over, I can't pay attention long enough to get through the explanations and then I get angry at myself for not being able to listen. I know a lot of people won't understand this or think I'm exaggerating, but this video was so easy to follow (which never happens for me) I want to cry.

how does one identify when to use the subquery? I thought limit by could have been used but instead the subquery was used. Could you explain that please?

Great question! A LIMIT clause here would have only returned 3 rows overall, but in this case, we wanted to return the top 3 rows FOR EACH gender, which is why we used a subquery to be able to filter down the results.

I briefly mention them at 4:31. They are two of many functions you can use when working with window functions. You can swap out the ROW_NUMBER() function with LEAD(Total) or LAG(Total) to get the next row's total and previous row's total values, respectively. I cover this more in depth in my Advanced SQL Querying course coming out next month on the Maven Analytics platform!
