Sorry I didn't see this. Yes you need stands for this. I don't believe it would work without stands. It may work with a 5 pack instead of 4 (quad).

I purchase them from aliexpress.com. Base comes with 5 pieces, same size as the lamp pole pieces :) The same bases come with the arch kit I used for my large balloon arch tutorial, the compact set you liked.

Instead of the stands I used, you can also use these lamps for stands www.walmart.com/ip/Mainstays-HW-F0377SLV-Mainstays-71-Floor-Lamp-Silver/12173436 This is a cheaper option. The lamp stands come with 5 pole pieces, you will need to buy an extra stand for the extra pieces.
