NYC cat calling is insane, please please please be safe. I've gone to this con a couple times, I recommend you try to stick on 42nd Street And 5th Ave if you're walking to get there. (Especially from port authority). You'll see a lot more cosplayers on the way.

i think it’s a universal experience when you cosplay a canine character that you’re going to get mistaken for a cat more than once luckily i’ve never really had an experience like that, there have been times where i’ve passed a group of people and i know they’ve called me a furry out of earshot (being from the UK you just know) but i also got called a princess by a young girl in the train station in my miss hina cosplay and i actually met another cosplayer in the wild once who didn’t know the con was on 😭

i think also population, like even in mcm london it’s rare to find weirdos (in my opinion) our biggest con in an a semi-secluded area with a train station, and that con being in new york city means there’s more of a chance that there’s gonna be weirdos i think the “worst” reaction i’ve ever had in cosplay was going as gorou in con and a young boy (no older than 6) looking up at me and fearfully clinging onto his mother 😭

I'm a furry and I can unfortunately relate to some people acting all weird. A while ago I participated in a charity event and I decided to wear my fursuit. People were mostly wholesome, but there were some kids who were meowing at me from a distance. My fursona isn't even a cat, so... I never feel safe outside with only one other person in New York or big cities when wearing cosplay. For reference, I don't cosplay anymore, but I did a lot when I was in my teens, and I looked the same in terms of body type, then as I do currently. I have only made it to one con and I went as Zelda, but I was in a LOT of pain. People asked for pics but I couldn't relax and I'm sure they all were horrid. I never saw any of them posted later. I did appear alongside my date for a talent show, which was recorded on video. It made for an.. unusual and 100% impossible pairing lmao. Zelda stood to the side, holding Anastasia's cane, and ever alert in case her legs buckled. The Romanov became weightless and spun three times to the music, her dark navy dress resembling a night full off stars as all the sewn in gems caught the lights. Many years and countless dance routines - a lifetime of lessons came rushing back and her body knew what to do as it carried the duchess to her patient princess. Zelda never took her eyes off her, as if the theatre were empty around them. She simply caught the duchess in strong, loving arms, and returned her cane. It was cute and wholesome lol. I wish I could find the vid now but it was years ago.

I know stalkers at conventions or, god forbid outside of conventions can happen to anyone regardless what the cosplay is... but sometimes you can just tell when it's a specific cosplay the type of people it ends up attracting. Sorry you had to go through that... and sadly... yeah it's New York... gotta be extra careful. Not speaking as a native but... yeah. Just glad you two got to your hotel and it's got special security. But I'm also glad you guys had a TON of people coming up to you, complimenting you and asking for pictures. (Also yeah, amazing trash will do that. "Hey you're beautiful" (gets rejected) "KEEP WALKING UGLY" like bro... )
