A Beginners Guide to the Game of Squash
The Squash Game; how to play squash and what are the rules of squash.
Squash is a racket and ball sport that is played all over the world and has a massive following of both amateur and professional players.
The origins of the sport date back to the game of 'racquets' way back in the 19th century.
Various iterations of the game have evolved into what we now know as the modern game of squash.
Squash is not yet an Olympic sport, and the pinnacle of its competition level is the Squash World Championships
This is where the best squash players from all over the world, gather to compete and find the ultimate squash champions.
So, What's The Aim of the Game
The aim of the game is to hit the squash ball off the front wall until your opponent fails to return it.
Every time a player fails to return the ball, their opponent receives a point.
Points make up games, which in turn determine the winner of the sets and match.
Now let's have a look at Players & Equipment
Squash can be played by either 2 or 4 players in a walled-off court.
The only equipment needed to play squash is a racket, similar to the ones used for tennis but the head is a little smaller.
The other piece of equipment is the squash ball. These are about 2 ½ inch or 40mm in diameter and weigh around 24 grams.
Squash balls come in a variety of different 'speeds' which range from Super Slow (for competition level players) to Fast (for beginners).
Squash balls are very low bouncing which makes them difficult to return (especially the Super Slow ones).
Squash balls are marked with different coloured dots according to their speed.
OK, Next Up Is The Squash Court; Where The Game Takes Place
The squash court is divided by many lines, both on the floor and in the walls.
There is a line that runs across the top of the front wall, and down the side walls.
If the ball strikes the wall above this line it is deemed Out and the opposing player is awarded a point.
Another line stretches across the width of the front wall at the top of the Board.
This is like the net in tennis; any ball striking the board below the line is deemed Out and the opposing player is awarded a point.
About 3 feet or 90 centimetres above the Board is another line on the front wall.
This is the service line and all serves must be above this line or they are a foul.
On the floor, the court is divided by a number of lines that make up a Service Box.
Both players must have at least one foot in the service box when making or waiting for a service.
The floor is also divided by two perpendicular lines that form a T shape.
When serving, the ball needs to land in the opponent's side of the Tee.
So, How Do You Score A Game Of Squash?
Points can be scored in one of four ways.
First off, if the ball bounces two or more times before your opponent returns it, you win a point.
If you opponent hits the ball into the front board, you win a point.
If the ball goes above the out-line, you win a point.
And, if your opponent deliberately obstructs you from returning the ball, you also get a point.
Scoring a squash match can be done by either of two methods.
Point A Rally Scoring or PARS is where either player can score from each others serves.
This is generally played to 11 points per game.
The 11 point PAR scoring system is now recognized as the official competition scoring system.
The second method of scoring is more traditional where the game is played to 9 points but players only score from their own serve.
How Do You Win the Game?
To win a squash match you need to win the pre-determined number of games and sets.
Most sets are decided over the best of 5 games and matches can be any number of sets.
Here Are The Basic Rules of Squash
Games can be played between two players (singles) or four players (doubles).
The ball must be hit with your racket only and strike the front wall with the boundaries.
The ball can strike the side wall at any time.
If a player accidentally gets in their opponents way, a Let can be called.
If a player deliberately tries to obstruct their opponent, a foul is called.
A player must win by two clear points to win a game.
A player cannot hit the ball twice or carry the ball.
Each player must have one foot inside the service box when a serve is made.
On returning a serve a player may hit the ball on the volley or after it has bounced.
