In Michigan, I've planted zucchini early and had problems, then replanted and had no problems. My understanding is that the squash vine borer moth is only out for the first part of the growing season so at least here in southern Michigan, if you succession plant, you might not need to take preventative measures for a later grow.

I live in TX and while from a gardening family, just started my first garden last year. I did lose all my squash and found your videos and am wrapping the vines this year. I think I also over water everything. Can you give me an approximate idea of how often you water. By the way, my father was born in Andalusia, AL.
@OldAlabamaGardener3 жыл бұрын
I understand you are in TX so the climate is different from where I live. I don't water my garden, I usually get enough rain to keep things going. Watering or when to water totally depends on your soil and how quickly it dries out. However, I will say that plants don't need as much watering as most folks think they do. I would water when the soil get dry. One thought on raised beds, they do dry out quicker than in the ground planting.

this is the best solution I have seen. Do you do anything for the stinkbugs?

Thank you so much, your videos are very educational. I enjoy them. What can I do to protect my squash plants from intense sun light ? Can I plant squash seeds in April here in northern part of Arizona ?

Thank you so much. Since our zucchini is beyond seedlings using cups as collars won’t work.

Thank you so much. I am going to try this. I get so discouraged every year trying to deal with the bugs. I thought they were the same thing (the "stink bug" look squash bugs and the borers). Appreciate the tip.

This is a very good tip. I usually get some sort of mold or fungus on my squash plants, could you address what that might be and remedies. Thank you.
@OldAlabamaGardener4 жыл бұрын
The mold or fungus is probably one called Powdery Mildew. Spray the plant leaves top and Botton (under side of the leaf) with 2% milk. Spray the plants at late evening after the sun has gone down but before dark. Or mix 1 teaspoon baking soda in a quart of water and spray. You might try mixing 1 teaspoon of baking soda in one quart of 2% milk and spray. Please subscribe. OAG

Great. Pearl of wisdom Have you noticed a particular Date after which the van bore is less common?
@OldAlabamaGardener4 жыл бұрын
The moth starts in the early spring, in Florida and as the warm weather comes on it travels northward. It usually gets to my area around 1 July. Then it goes into cycles of moth, eggs, grubs, larva and again moths. Thank you for watching my videos. Please subscribe. OAG

@@OldAlabamaGardener I just dug out the boogers out of my vines this week; sprayed and the injected the vines with some bt to kill any i might have missed. Waiting to see if the plants will survive. I'm guessing I still need to wrap the vines?

I love this video!!! The squash borer terrorized my pumpkins and I did not know how to prevent it then. Do I do pumpkins the same as you’ve done the squash? Snd what about the looong vines on pumpkins? This is so wonderful because I do NOT want to use any kind of insecticide.
@OldAlabamaGardener3 жыл бұрын
I don't grow pumpkins so I don't have personal experience with them. Because pumpkins grow very long, it may be a problem to keep this going on them. OAG

Hope you answer questions on old videos too. What are you adding to each planting hole as you plant? Do you wrap any other stems as the plant grows? Thanks!
@OldAlabamaGardener3 жыл бұрын
I add some commercial fertilizer (13-13-13), some organic fertilizer, some compost, some worm castings. No, I don't wrap the stem as it grows. Thank you. I appreciate you watching my videos. OAG

@@OldAlabamaGardener Thank you! I wrapped my young squash stems yesterday and started a few replacement plants just in case.

Well don't I feel like a dummy?! LOL I just removed about 12 of those nasty critters from my zucchini and pumpkin plants and covered the cut vines with dirt, per another channel's video. I really want/need to wrap my vines but I'm afraid if I missed one, I'll never see it and the plant will die. I guess they're doing that anyway though so I'll give this a try today. I'd be happier with a chemical though, ONLY because I can't logically wrap my 2 pumpkin plants entirely given how long they are and how many vines they have. I know I hate the vine borer and had never even heard of them before this year. This is my first ever garden because my parents aren't able anymore so I'm doing it for them. Anyway, thanks a million for your great advice!
@OldAlabamaGardener3 жыл бұрын
If you are okay with a chemical, try Sevin dust sprinkled on and along the vines, start at the ground where the plant is in the ground.

Lord Bless you sir! I never heard of these damned things until I moved to Florida and I’ve been waging war trying to get my poor squash to make it just to the point to get one or two squash. I’ve even injected my stems with BT using an old turkey injector. Now I know! 36 years old and learning every day thanks to young men such as yourself. Thank you Sir!
@OldAlabamaGardener4 жыл бұрын
WOW! Only 36 years old, I am 81 years old. And yes, I am still learning. I must tell you that some people have told me this didn't work for them. As to Bt, I am not sure it is okay to have it injected into food that I am going to eat. Thank you for watching my videos. Please subscribe. OAG

@@OldAlabamaGardener The ones i have trouble with are the black ones...the tinny ones that bite really hard and the small ones (black color) as well. the tinny ones make dirt holes with mountains...the other ones get into my pots, under rocks, under plastic covers, everywhere and they kill the roots of my plants
