I have to say I tried this method and wrapped to the base of each leaf (wrapped everyday) but this is the first year I did not lose any plants! I also checked everyday on the exposed leaves and only found 7 eggs on 6 plants. Got rid of them early before they hatched. Thank you OAG! I can grow squash again. 😀

@@lucylucy2171 Fresh cabbage juice. Look up Dr. Garnett Cheney and cabbage juice. The main thing is you have to find what foods make you react badly and not consume those. Keep a journal of the foods you eat if you have to. Obviously, you should talk to your doc about it and not just take this advice. Good luck to you.

Dang, my plants are really small when I transplant them. I did use foil last year after watching your vidro, but I did 2 other things, too. I allowed my plants to root in more than one spot and mounded dirt over the rooted sections. Then I went vertical! I only had 2 squash, but also had pumpkin I did the same with. Thanks for the info. I grew up in the Deep South and cannot recall my dad ever having problems with his squash plants, or any plants for that matter. Unfortunately, he’s no longer around to ask questions. I now live in the Florida Panhandle, and I’m having nothing BUT problems. Every year my wife wants me to quit, but I’m too hardheaded, though it certainly is tempting. I’ll certainly try this and see how it goes.

We have squash bugs so bad here in Southern Arkansas that we haven't grown any type of squash, cucumbers, watermelon or cantaloupe in a long time, due to the squash bugs. We even resorted to pulling the plants out of the ground, because of the millions of eggs on the underside of the leaves, and burning them. We will give this a try on our winter squash and pray it works. Thank you so much for this wonderful video. May God bless you...

You really should be using a product called: Pyola. It is a contact pesticide and doesn't remain viable on the plants. That means it has to actually contact the insect to kill it. You can buy it at: Gardensalive.com Research it and you will find it is safe for you to use and it works. OSG

OAG you are a treasure and are missed! For those reading who tried this and it did not work, it wasn't you. The SVB that attack my garden lay eggs all down the vine, even if the vine is twenty feet long. I still recommend people follow his tip because it does work for some people. I've found some other strategies though. Some of us just have too high a population for the foil to work. OAG would want us to keep trying. RIP garden friend.

In Michigan, I've planted zucchini early and had problems, then replanted and had no problems. My understanding is that the squash vine borer moth is only out for the first part of the growing season so at least here in southern Michigan, if you succession plant, you might not need to take preventative measures for a later grow.

Just like you said, one day I said, just look at you, you're so pretty (my squash), and the next day, so sad,😭. I live on u-tube. I subscribed to your site today. Today you taught me a major prevent lesson. I look forward to learning much more.🤗 Oh, a funny story. We live on a river. It flooded, my garden was 3 feet under water. I caught, (I kid you not) a fish from my veggie garden. 🙃❤ GOD BLESS YOU 🙏

For the tomato green horn worms, spray with a product called: Bacillus thuringiensis The common name is just Bt. It will kill the worms but not hurt you. Stink bugs and aphids, try Dawn Dish soap mixed in water 1 tablespoon soap to 1/2 gallon of water, spray plants well. I think I also over water everything. Can you give me an approximate idea of how often you water. My husband built off the ground raised beds for me to avoid the tree roots that have invaded every box for 40 years. This will be a new start in my new beds. I so appreciate all of your videos. By the way, my father was born in Andalusia, AL.

I understand you are in TX so the climate is different from where I live. I don't water my garden, I usually get enough rain to keep things going. Watering or when to water totally depends on your soil and how quickly it dries out. However, I will say that plants don't need as much watering as most folks think they do. I would water when the soil get dry. One thought on raised beds, they do dry out quicker than in the ground planting.

I learned something. I thought I would not have a problem with the borers until after the squash started blooming. I had some in pots waiting til they had stems long enough to wrap in foil. I walk past them. And there was a moth flying around my pots!!

Actually the moth starts in the warm areas of the south and as the weather warms up, them moth or its off spring, move north. The fact that the global weather is getting warmer may mean the moth will over winter farther north than in past years. OAG

@@OldAlabamaGardener Have read The deep south can have trouble with them all summer. Where up north , only in their spring. Planted some Nasturtium around the squash. Suppose to deter the boers. Plus I planted more squash seed next to the plants I set out. So if they got into my plants maybe I would do a better job on protecting them. also hung some traps in the plants as well.

This is a very good tip. I usually get some sort of mold or fungus on my squash plants, could you address what that might be and remedies. Thank you.
@OldAlabamaGardener
@OldAlabamaGardener 4 жыл бұрын
The mold or fungus is probably one called Powdery Mildew. Spray the plant leaves top and Botton (under side of the leaf) with 2% milk. Spray the plants at late evening after the sun has gone down but before dark. Or mix 1 teaspoon baking soda in a quart of water and spray. You might try mixing 1 teaspoon of baking soda in one quart of 2% milk and spray. Please subscribe. OAG

Well don't I feel like a dummy?! LOL I just removed about 12 of those nasty critters from my zucchini and pumpkin plants and covered the cut vines with dirt, per another channel's video. I really want/need to wrap my vines but I'm afraid if I missed one, I'll never see it and the plant will die. I guess they're doing that anyway though so I'll give this a try today. I'd be happier with a chemical though, ONLY because I can't logically wrap my 2 pumpkin plants entirely given how long they are and how many vines they have. I know I hate the vine borer and had never even heard of them before this year. This is my first ever garden because my parents aren't able anymore so I'm doing it for them. Anyway, thanks a million for your great advice!

If you are okay with a chemical, try Sevin dust sprinkled on and along the vines, start at the ground where the plant is in the ground.
