It certainly seems time that the Tour invested in an ultra clear slo-mo camera for the Video Referee. The technology exists to remove these sort of problematic decisions. Putting it to one side, what a match. Great to see Gaultier playing this good again, and Asal is just a force of nature. He is pure box office

Man, for four games Asal/Gaultier was pretty much the greatest squash ever. Weirdness on that one point aside, Gaultier clearly ran out of steam in the fifth though. Looking forward to seeing more Asal. That kid is viral video dynamite.

Wait what? Gautier was out for over a year and is still injured -- look at how he's barely (if you know him...) moving. He's slow, his balance is poor, and because of this he was forced to change his playstyle. Gaultier from 2 years ago would still be out of Asal's league. To me it was sad to watch. Nonetheless, I think Asal will catch up with the very top within the next 2-3 years, so good for him.

My goodness, I'm old, and my eyes aren't so good, but it was very easy to see that was a double, especially from the first one they showed. It doesn't seem like having a computer program make the decision would be too difficult. There are other factors, such as how the ball came off the racket, that make it clear it was a double, which a program should be able to discern, although it beats me how the video refs can't get this right. At least call a let if you can't see what's happening.

Ball is good. I played at 0.25, frame by frame, asal is too fast, just enough time to stuck his racket between the floor and the ball, hence producing the upwards bounce off his racket, not double bounces. Ball is good IMO

After the match, why not celebrate. I thought that was funny and a bit touching given what he came through. Paul Coll was a fair bit better than Tom Richards. Pj had it right when he said he won 13 points on the trot in the last period of the match. The other commentator was biased, saying Richards played really well. He played only as well as he was left. Coll was coasting. Last point of the match illustrates it.

@@hashkenhabib I was doing the same thing and never once saw the ball touch the floor. Downwards the entire way. Very close but it seemed like he just knicked under it with the frame of his racket. @hashkenhabib
@hashkenhabib 5 жыл бұрын
@@chriscrawford94 It's just as a fairly good squash player myself (not suggesting you aren't, I'm just talking from my own perspective), the timing he gets there feels like a double, and the way the ball spins looks like it bounced first, then get picked up off the frame of the racket. We might disagree about the bounce downward/upward, but the way the ball flies, and the timing of the pickup just both, for me, speak to a double (and that's also why I think both commentators immediately said it was a double). I think at least a let would have been the correct call.

I like Tom Richards' passion but most of his shots here are just garbage. You can't expect to beat Coll with shots that loose off the sidewall. Contrast eg Gaultier's first game in which, as the commentators note, he hits every shot with purpose - seems like every one is tight to the sidewall, fading in the back, or into the nick. Richards has played much better in the past (and I suspect he hit some good ones here not shown, given the tight scoreline) but these sloppy shots suggest a lack of mental focus. I hope to see him get a big scalp one of these days!

if you ask me Asal down played his game to accommodate a limping opponent nothing more humiliating or respectful depending on how you look at it, if this does not get Gaultier to retire nothing will. But he might as well forget limping his way to any final from now on, a life lesson to allow of us: "when to make a graceful exit!"
