I don't understand what everyone means by the commentators being biased. Throughout the entire match they would point out areas both players needed to focus on in order to get the advantage. Whichever player is losing the game is typically the one that receives more analysis from the commentators, so when Coll was starting to fall apart at the end of the 4th, they obviously focused on him and what he was missing. When Shorbagy lost that incredible third, they were analyzing what he would need to do to stay in the 4th. Also the ref was a lot better than most other matches, and explained all the decisions well.

Agree. I was surprised how well Coll's fairly limited strategy worked in the first three games, but after Elshorbagy took control early in the fourth, I expected him to improvise. But he really didn't. Even in the fifth, if he ever got the T he just went back to the same shots that stopped working in the fourth. Kind of a surprising failure of imagination for such a great player.

14:30 Clearly a let. Can’t believe the ref didn’t see the forward movement to cut off Coll’s path to the ball. Let that be the barometer of a good shot-not the quality of the block.

ElShorbagy is clear much better than Coll at playing to the referees. Even the commentators, "You just know that if there is a loose ball ElShorbagy will be better at manipulating it into a Stroke situation." 4th game a great example of the style of squash that the Egyptians are promoting. But watching the match from the sofa, it was not fair at a few points in the match. Because if you don't get it perfect the ball will sit up in the front of the court and you hand the opponent a loose ball and opportunity to kill the point.
@captainzork6109 Жыл бұрын
Oh, boasts? Yeah, the ball has to travel for longer and they are slower than drives or simple straight drops. But boasts can be very useful as a defensive tool for when you’re otherwise unable to get the ball back. They can also be nice from mid court when you’re in an attacking position, if you put a bit of a hold in your swing. That is called a ‘working boast’. It is actually nice for when you’re in front of your opponent, which can be especially deceptive if you put of a bit of a hold in your swing. That hold can put the option of the straight into your opponent’s mind, and if a boast comes out it can catch them off guard, often winning the point or putting them in an uncomfortable position

Great match, but a shame that the difference came down to bush league tactics and one-sided refereeing. if psa isn't going to do anything about this, Coll will take it as a message to get a little dirtier. it happens in all sports. the MLB let pitchers use illegal substances for grip until the guys playing it fair decided it was too big a disadvantage not to use it. what happened in this match wasn't superior gamesmanship... it was garbage

There is nothing wrong with giving yes lets for clear interference. It’s safer for players, encourages players to clear their shots better, and it’s more fair. God this comment section makes me lose hope for the squash community. Shorbagy won the match, that’s the bottom line. He outplayed Coll, dominated the majority of the rallies and outsmarted him. Coll was mentally dejected by the end of the match. If Coll wants to be able to these kind of matches he needs a bit more of a doggy nature. I loved the drama and genius manipulation of shorbagy, it was genuinely a masterclass. When Peter barker did this kind of thing it was considered a positive trait (obviously because he’s English).
@johnrogstad12782 жыл бұрын
"Genius manipulation" (of the ref) should not be part of the game. If a player is able to influence the ref to make a bad call, then the result of a rally is no longer due to the actual quality of play. In some cases, *poor* playing will directly result in a point or favorable let. Is that really what you want to watch? I don't. Now, that being said, Elshorbagy played better overall and earned the win. But he should have done so more fairly. The win would have been more admirable in that case.

@@JK-jr1gs Cheating is easy. It is cynical and foolish to believe that only smart players know how to do it. Many of us learn how to cheat early on. We decide not to because this violates our entire conception of what this game is supposed to be about. Improvising within strict limitations is the entire point of the drama of sport. Intentionally violating the limitations is not only dishonest, it is a misunderstanding of the overall social utility (and beauty) of what sport even is.

Can't believe how racially one-sided the comments are here ignoring the few unfair no-lets for El-Shorbagy and claiming ref was tough on Coll.
