This is very much needed info! We just rescued a girl today (who is actually from the same litter as two of our other girls) who had her bonded mate die and she's apparently been going downhill for weeks, although to me it seems like she wasn't well cared for to begin with. She is EXTREMELY emaciated (she's 11 months and around 360 grams at the moment) and has the smallest poops ever! For comparison, her sisters who we've had for about 8-9 months now are almost 1000 grams, I'm so incredibly appalled! We've had her less than 24 hours and have been supplementing with critical care, but she has eaten a little hay and pellets, lettuce, a cucumber slice, and some kale throughout the day. Poor baby had to get a bath so we could try to work some of her matted fur out, get her ears thoroughly cleaned, nails trimmed, and ointment put on her eyes and ears for a fungal infection. We may have to trim her teeth as well, but that is to be determined. We've named her Mira since it'll be a damn miracle if we can get her to full health. I hate sounding like a pessimist, but she looks like hell. The good news is that besides her eating, drinking a little water, and being decently active in the cage, I was able to hear her little digestive system working!! Sorry for such a long comment, I just have so many feelings for this little lovely girl and I really appreciate you and this video for giving me some hope that she'll make it ❤️

Thank you so much for this video! My guinea pig stopped eating this morning and her belly looked so rounded, like it was about to explode. I didn't have a massager so I just massaged her belly with my hands for over an hour. I gave her gripe water too. I also didn't have any guinea pig critical care food and ended up mashing some oxbow pellets and syringe feeding it to her. She's starting to eat hay on her own again! Thanks again. This is really good, loved the diagram of the gut. I think critical care or similar is a real essential to have at home always, as you never have time to order it when they get ill as it happens so quick. A vibrating toothbrush is very handy to get things moving in bloat too. I have used infacol successfully, but might try gripe water next time.
@blaablaa222 жыл бұрын
I can't also stress enough about having the "right tools for the job" available, meaning the right kind of a syringe: an one millimeter syringe (and cut away the nozzle). It's a night and day difference. Not only is it easier to feed them generally (portioining etc:), but also it is easier to put the food into right location, so they won't spill it out. I would say to ANYONE owning a guinea pig that they should always have 1) critical care mixture 2) the right kind of a syringe 3) infacol or similar at hand, because as you said: there's not much time, if the need comes.
@cloebella29133 жыл бұрын

@@SqueakDreams Please update to remove the recommendation for using gripe water. After consulting a very experienced rescue they said infacol is best used to treat as the active ingredient needs to contain smithecone. Gripewater doesn't contain this and is basically useless. People might think it's helping only to find their guinea pigs getting worse and dying suddenly. Do your own research and consult experienced exotic vets yourself and they will let you know. Thanks very much
@SqueakDreams2 жыл бұрын
@@dangnguyen7223 My research for this video included much reading of several forums and asking one of the top guinea pig specialist vets in the UK. As explained in the video, there has been a move away from simethicone due to the way it works grouping gas bubbles together, which could be a danger in some cases. However, opinions differ still, and as stated in the video, people should only use either if they are sure they want to do so and if they have any doubts they should consult an experienced vet. I believe gripe water helped when experiencing bloat in my own guinea pigs, just like others say infacol has. However, neither product is designed for guinea pigs, neither has any official research published on its effects in guinea pigs, and as such there is no evidence to say either can work as effectively as prescription gut stimulants from the vet and tummy massages.
@dangnguyen72232 жыл бұрын
@@SqueakDreams According to cavy central guinea pig rescue in Sydney with over 30 years experience, which i volunteer at, said infacol has proven to be effective and gripe water does nothing (especially gripe water can differ in ingredients from brand to brand or if made by the chemist). In the video you have placed gripewater (herbal remedy) over infacol (a proven medicine) which shouldn't be the case. There is no evidence for the description of bubbles formation breaking or grouping depending on the product -it is a myth. I hope you can edit the video to rectify this for guinea pigs' sake around the world. Thankyou

My piggy died in my arms last night, and I am wondering if this is what he was dealing with. He and his cage mate were neutered 6 days ago. He was doing fine for a few days. 2 days ago we noticed he was not drinking much and poos were smaller. Took him to the vet yesterday morning. They prescribed critical care and gave him a syringe of water under his skin. They didn't seem alarmed, nor did they communicate to me how serious it was. We kept syringe feeding him and giving him water yesterday. But, it was too late, apparently. My heart is broken. We have only had him for 4 months. Now his cage mate is alone. They were fighting a lot, and the vet said neuters would help them get along better. The whole reason for the neuters was so they could finally get along and not be so lonely. And now one is totally alone. And I am devastated. I hope this video can help me with my current and future pigs. xoxo

Think my guinea pig suffered this lately but cant tell for sure. She stopped eating. started drooling, would move her whole body as if trying to vomit. I called my vet right away but they were closed. Her nose also got watery. Her ears also started to turn purple/black. While i did give her critical care im not sure she even swallowed it. some of it fell out her mouth. I had no probiotics, i didnt even know what that was. she had been on antibiotics for almost 2 months before she started this drooling. I sometimes wonder if the bactrim (for UTI she had) did not kill off the bad bacteria along with the good bacteria and her system just became defenseless. While on bactrim she would stand still sometimes for long periods of time and poop. Never did find out what caused this.

Hi! My Guinea pig started to do some weird movements, I don’t know exactly how to explain it, but I research and I think it is gut stasis. She started doing it after eating one piece of escarole at night, I thought the problem was that she was eating fast, she always eat fast the fresh vegetables, so I stop giving it at night and gave fresh food only at midday. But today, at night I saw she doing it again, after eating hay, and now I’m worried. She is eating totally fine, she doesn’t eat fast when eating hay/pellets, just fresh veggies, she drinks lots of water and is popping/peeing normally too. The poop size and texture is normal, also the urine. I’m gonna take her to the vet next week because it’s in another city, but please, could you help me? The movements that she does is like a contraction in the stomach, as if she was trying to poop but the poop doesn’t come off, she also does a weird low sound, it lasts a few seconds and then she is totally normal, as if nothing happened. Today after it happened soon after she started eating her own poop, and came back to eat hay. Her diet is: there’s always lots of hay, one tablespoon of pellets for Guinea pig at 10-11am, then at 12:30/1pm fresh veggies (1 piece of escarole, 2/3 small pieces of Chayote and 2/3 small pieces of eggplant, sometimes I switch the chayote for cucumber) and at night one more tablespoon of pellets for Guinea pig.

@SqueakDreams3 жыл бұрын
I haven't used these, I would do a lot of reading on forums to get an idea of how much they are really recommended and how much to give. Only give one of the two I think if you do decide. However - in my experience the best thing you can do before getting proper gut stimulant from the vet is tummy rubs and using a massager if you have one, plus syringe feeding (no fresh veg) if your piggie is not wanting to eat. Best of luck
@avaggdu13 жыл бұрын
@@SqueakDreams Thanks. The thing with activated charcoal and chalky tablets is that they neutralise the gas in the gut rather than encouraging the mobility through the gut. Noises are normal :) If you suspect bloat and/or gut stasis, a possible sign could be NOT hearing normal digestive noises from the gut.

My Guinea pig has a fat belly but it’s only one one side? And when you pick her up you can tell the big belly thing hurts her..I’m really worried, does anyone know what this is? And how i can help it?
@SqueakDreams2 жыл бұрын
This could be bloat, it could be a mass or enlarged ovarian cyst. You need to have her seen by a guinea pig vet - best of luck 🌻

How about liquid bloat ? One of my pigs sounds likes he full of liquid , you can hear it sloshing about in his back end . He's seen my vet and is on all the gut simulent meds and pain killer . He's acting normal now and grazing as normal . Just worried about this liquid

Hi, did you ever get any answers to this question? I am experiencing this right now with mine, he was given a gif stimulant and pain meds but I hear liquid sloshing around as well when he moves.

@@CupcaKeSwurL I didn't get answers , but it went away one its own after a week of gut stimulant . I also took my boy off veg for a week and syringe fed lots of pro biotic . I used pro c and then a recovery food aswell called critical care . You can buy it from most vets without a consultation fee .

@@CupcaKeSwurL it's s ary because it can be liquid retention from heart failure progressing . But I can also be liquid from gas bloat causing it aswell apparently . Let me know how your pig gets on . @@ndavies5968 we took him to the emergency vet and they checked everything- vitals were all good, it was just that he had a gas bubble in his stomach as seen on x-rays. But I still hear that liquid sound… he’s only been on meds a few hours so hoping things will change!! He has not been eating or drinking, we have been syringe feeding critical care and water. He is pooping so no blockage.

Vets for subq fluids, and all the advice in the video, you must get food into him or her ASAP to avoid complete gut stasis.

@@SqueakDreams i think we'll loose him. He's gotten skinny. Lost like 100 grams. I think he has problems with his teeth. He doesn't eat or drink. Its sad but we have to accept it. Although we feed him with a surringe, he still tries to spit out the food/water. :(
@SqueakDreams2 жыл бұрын
@@mauras0 If its teeth then its gut stasis (he just hasn't been eating enough and system has slowed down making him poorly). So don't give up, carry on feeding, they can't spit it out if its put far enough in, to the 0.2 or 0.3 ml line on a 1 ml syringe. You also need a vet. Subq fluids can make the world of difference. Equally the vet can help him pass without suffering, so please take him to one.

@Squeak Dreams Please update to remove the recommendation for using gripe water.

Is this the bad stuff - Simethicone
@SqueakDreams2 жыл бұрын
This is the ingredient in Infacol which I mention in the video, personally I wouldn't try it but other people do. The best medications are those the vet can gave and you can ask them for their opinion on Simethicone. I think the vibration and tummy massage works wonders for gas build up!

But grass is just fresh HAY. Your piggies should be eating grass everyday not just as a treat. Wild guinea pigs don't have someone to cut up veggies for them.
@SqueakDreams Жыл бұрын
In seasonal countries grass is not available all year, and can cause digestive upset if guinea pigs are not used to it (in spring for example after a winter of no grass). Also it is not readily available for a lot of people who don't have gardens and aren't sure where to pick grass that is clean and free from herbicides, dog urine, etc. I agree grass is not a treat as long as a guinea pig is well accustomed to it in their diet. I would not advise giving fresh grass to a piggie who is already suffering bloat and who isn't used to eating grass on a regular basis. In this case, hay should be their main source of fibre and hay is what we should encourage them to eat when they are experiencing bloat or gut stasis.

NOT TRUE !!! my piggie has oddly shaped poop all the time and doesnt always eat in large ammounts and she had a clean bill of health at her last check up which was last week. im sorry but you need to recheck your facts
@SqueakDreams2 жыл бұрын
Oddly shaped poop, especially when soft, is one of the symptoms of bloat. It may also be caused by other dietary reasons. However it is still not normal, so I would check your piggie is getting enough fibre and has access to fresh good quality hay 24/7. You could try reducing the amount of fresh veggies and see if this helps.
