6am should have seen her arriving at the airport, not just leaving her house ffs. I had a 7:35 Easyjet flight from Stansted a few years ago and walked into the terminal building at 6am. It was already mad busy even at that time and they had barely opened the checkin for my flight. Absolutely no stress for me at all. Stansted also has very long security queues so I had extra time to not worry about that, then even more time to just chill airside before the gate came up on the screen.

I say arrive at the Airport 1 hour before a domestic flight, and 2 hours before an international flight. But it also depends on Airport size, and transport links (and their reliability). And if you don't travel often, and are pretty amatuerish then you should definitely leave longer. So I'd tell my Mum to get there an 2 hours before a domestic flight, and 3 hours before an international.

1.5h before flight is a little too risky .. I think at least 2-3h before flight would be advisable. Its not uncommon for people to 1) be caught in traffic jam for 1h 2) sometimes the cabby lost his way or gets involved in an accident, 3) sometimes people even go to the wrong airport or wrong terminals 4) left something important in the hotel and has to turn back to get it ... strangely these crazy things tend to happen when taking a flight ... so 2-3h before flight I think is safer ...

If I have a really important event that I cannot be late for, (work, job interview, flight etc..), I will always allow time for the unexpected. So what if you get there too early? What is the worst that can happen? You might have to buy a newspaper to kill some time. The alternative is to miss your flight and either lose your trip or have to pay to be transferred to the next available flight: £100 with Ryanair. You can see being 30-60 mins early is a small price to pay. Years ago I was travelling to Gatwick by coach for an early flight. Gatwick is an unfamiliar airport to me and I know the M25 can be a nightmare so I aimed to get there 3hrs before to give myself plenty of time. In fact the coach sailed through and we arrived 30 mins early meaning we had 3hrs 30 to kill. A pain maybe, but consider I'd aimed to get there 2hrs before, left 1hr later in the morning closer to rush our traffic. Imagine that now we are stuck in traffic and I have the anxiety of not getting to the airport on time or making a mistake once inside. For me it's not worth it. At the end of the day if you miss your flight you can blame the taxi driver for being late or you can chalk it up to experience and leave earlier next time.

Courtney Kidgell A taxi being late and then traffic being bad is not an excuse unless she sat in traffic for 3 hours. You shouldn’t EVER chance showing up later. Get there early and sit bored to make sure you’re on time. I did this job when I was younger and honestly, people would show up last minute all the time and then ask why they had to run like hell to catch the plane!

Master Pooper you should aim to leave early enough so that you arrive at the airport 2 hours before your flight. It may seem excessive but it avoids situations like these. You can run into traffic, long queues etc. Better to be prepared for the worst.

tom donaldson, seeing these Easyjet shows has me terrified of being late. Last time I had to fly (and it was domestic) I was at the security gate almost two hours before. I was grumpy because it was so hard to stay awake at 5:30 a.m. while stuck in line. Worse, it's too risky to take a nap, anyone could snitch your passport or wallet while you're sleeping. They really should have rental pods for people to snooze in if they have to wake up that early.

Because the average uk person drinks about 1.5 cups of coffee and 2 cups of tea a day (that's a lot of caffeine which is why I assume they at least drink coffee in the morning). I'm saying in general not using caffeine helps you control your sleeping cycle better and you wake up less tired because your body is not dependent on external stimuli to produce the substances meant for waking it up.

Should have been in the airport at 6am, not just leaving the house. The traffic in that part of England is absolutley brutal pretty much all day long. I had a 7:40am flight in 2013 and was in the terminal at 5:55am. So early that check in was only just opening and I was one of the first through, which was good because it took me 20 minutes just to clear security. No stress though.

Always leave with planning so I will have an hour extra than they recommend. For example in Manchester Airport they recommend to arrive 1 and a half hours before an inland flight or 2 hours before a European flight, so I arrive with 2 or 3 hours spare. An extra hour of waiting isn't going to cause you any harm, it's actually going to give you less stress... Simple really. This woman obviously didn't plan things well enough, she should've got things ready a day or two before flying... Very simple. So on the day of travelling she can just leave without anything to worry about.
