Informative video Phil and I have to agree with Colin Rimmer. Our brake shoes are original from 2013. This video made me look at my annual service check sheet and the brakes are included in the service. If I hear squealing between services I am now prepared. Thanks for the advice Phil 👍 Cheers Rob

Thanks for this info. I have just taken my xplore 304 .. collected from dealer 2 weeks ago.have gone on my 1st trip started yesterday and everytime I breaked I heard a terrible squealing i have advance paid for some sites and bought a ticket for a london show so I want to do my holiday... Will be contacting and taking it to the dealer when I get back home

Hi Phil Ours was the same. Bought new 2019 brakes squealed every time, really embarrassing as people were turning heads and looking at the van and wandering was was going off. The 2020 and 2021 services the engineer put some sort of blue grease on the shoe edge where the fitted into the drum, not on the shoe surface though. It quietend the brakes down for a bit but started squealing again, so the 2022 service I had the shoes changed to a better set and hey presto, they don't squeal anymore and drove down through France without a sound.👍

Hello. Since changing ours we have had no issues. Alko put cheap crappy shoes in the drums from china. Our old ones were absolutely shot. They should have recalled them instead of blaming customers. It is a shocking state of affairs. Glad yours are sorted now. Many Thanks Phil👍🙂

Hi Phil, I purchased my Lunar Clubman new on Jan 2019. I reported the squealing to to my dealer and he told me that Alko knew of the issue and they were defective pads, so they replaced the brake pads free of charge.

Funny, our 2019 Caravan. I argued not asked to have the shoes replaced. Alko are appalling to deal with. They refused to the point I quoted sales act. Then they sent to the dealer upgraded shoes. Ironically, I discovered that the material used is a cheaper alternative to make the liners.Bug bear is that you can a not so squeaky brakes if you upgrade the shoes. I think it’s a huge con to be fair.

Hi Phil great video. Funny this really. I have just got a 2018 swift castle powis and it’s going back for the second time with faults. The main one which is really annoying is the brakes. First time it went in I don’t think they even looked at the brakes they just gave me a print out email from Alko saying the problem but the caravan is still safe. Not impressed so see what happens next time it’s in. Cheers 👍

Our engineer has said the same thing about Alko brakes and now fit a replacement brake, no squealing and they work fine

Looks like somebody at Alko has been cutting corners sourcing cheap components, get really pricey if you’ve a TA. Shoes on my van are originals, 2009, and still serviceable. Hope you enjoyed your Hols Phil.

I had to have my drums and pads replaced on a Alko chassis last year it cost over £750!! Still makes a hell of a racket when braking.

So it was a know issue and there was an upgrade. Sounds to me like a re-call should have been done. Happy it was not the drums. We had a Fiat with a similar system changing the brake drrums was going to be more than the car was worth.

If you go on Facebook forums this is a known issue about Alko brakes, our 2019 had to have the drums replaced because of this issue at service but was covered under warranty at the time. Still sqeeks now but the problem is alko are the only shoe providers as far as I know 😞

Our 2019 Bailey Cadiz has squeaky brakes they had to replace a drum on less than 1500 miles,which I had to pay for and fight to get reimbursed which I got back, but they still squeal, trouble is they replace like for like, I have heard people putting pattern shoes on to cure the problem,

Bought our 2018 Sprite Major 4SB new February 2019 and dealer Broadlane replaced the brakes shoes after 3 months of ownership in May 2019 after I pointed the matter out to them. Alko moved the brake pad production to China a short while before then and tried to get out of their care of duty for shocking pads 2020 on saying they were safe. It just reinforces how naff, overrated and what a false myth German engineering is from this, their vacuum cleaners etc (Dyson was compensated over £200Million by Eu after falsified claims by German manufacturers who miss-sold to try to match Dyson performance and quality) and their illegal toxic cars 2006-19 that both petrol and diesel.

@@lostweekendscaravan Still waiting for the parts to arrive, told the service receptionist that I was shocked that how long the brakes lasted and he tried to palm me off that it's was quite common with caravans. In my opinion it should have been a recall. I have also sent a complaint via email to AL-KO but not expecting anything.
