Squid fishing Wirrina Cove SA. Using a weightless floating squid jag

Hi fishos join me for a quick squid fishing session down at Wirrara Cove break wall if you are learning you may find this interesting. I manage to catch myself a feed, hope you enjoy the video and if you think it deserves. Hi Tony. Thank you so much for your comment, that particular type of squid jag is a Neptune Tackle squid jag, its nice and cheap and I have always preferred smaller squid jags over large ones. I bought mine at the original petrol station in Normanville, but now I think they sell a type supplied by S.A Bait which is also cheap. I haven't tried that type but would imagine it would work the same. Maybe phone around you will find them. That mince recipe is tops lots of fish love it, bream, gar, tommies, salmon trout, salmon ect. And yes I plan to do a bit of all types of fishing with a few ideas to share, lure fishing and more thank you again Tony and all the best mate.

Hi Antonis, what I mean by the dead low or the dead high of the tide is when the tide stops moving between tides to start running in or running out, also 1 or 2 hours either side of the tide change is good for squid fishing, also when the moon is half moon when the tide is at its weakest during the month I have found good for squid fishing, over hear in South Australia this is known as the dodge tide, very little tidal movement good for squid fishing. Hi Madzie 2000, happy to hear you have found this helpful thank you for letting me know. Fishing for squid with the sinker and the squid jag above is very good, if you use a weighted squid jag instead of one with the weight removed like I do in this video work it along the bottom back towards you a bit faster knowing the squid jag sinks, when you catch a squid this way you will really get the feel for it. I grew up fishing Pt Noarlunga jetty best squid spot just up from the steps fishing high tide and running out tide towards Christies beach, float was good too with small tommies on the jag for bait . Hi Anthony thank you for your message mate. Yes give it a go I think when you get the feel for it working your sinker along the bottom nice and steady back towards the shore you will be impressed. Hi Dave, fellow SA fisho here, absolutely love your videos. I was wondering do you have much trouble with the jag fouling or tangling with this rig? If yes any tips on how to minimise this happening? Is the dropper loop still doubled up and the jag is connected by passing the end of the dropper loop through eye of jag then over the jag to secure it? I tried a variant of your rig but with a normal squid jag. My dropper loop probably wasn’t as big as yours, and i did have some troubles with it tangling a bit, not every cast but maybe 30%. Hi Greg, thank you for watching and nice to hear you enjoy my videos yes sometimes my jag does get hooked up on my line but not very often not enough to bother. I use 20 pound nylon and my large dropper loop is approximately 30-40cm long and it remains double line and connected to the jag the way you said passed through the eye and over the jag to secure and my sinker is always as small as possible. I also sometimes use a normal weighted jag on this rig but I find you have to work it and retrieve it a bit quicker. Have you been catching a few squid with this rig I do use it in all depths of water but I find it works very well in deep water also in windy conditions when you can put a larger sinker on to reduce the bow in the line. Gday Trin. No I didn't end up using my float rig but I should have used it especially when the tide stopped running. The pilchard like I had can often tempt a squid better than a jig especially if they are in a funny mood for sure. I got carried away with my squid jig. Next time I will defiantly use it, different place though. I'm having crumbed squid and tommies and chips for dinner yummy.

Well done David, great idea with the sinker setup, i know you like to smoke fish, next time you are there flick a chrome lure around, you will get snook there and i think they are pretty good smoked....

Yes that rig works very well I won't use any other rig the Greek squid fishos taught me that on the old Rapid Bay Jetty and the best time to fish.I will never forget a greek lady who helped me out. I have seen the snook down there chasing small bait fish but never tried for them I did have a lure in my tackle but I was to involved in squiding as usual. next time, and yes yummy smoked.

Squid yum. I also go out at Wirrina cove. Always go out wide to try for Snapper or whiting but never fail to pick up a few squid as well. Average about 8 - 10. You should try my recipe for salt and pepper squid. I use your Favourite.... Curry in the mix. I think you have watched it. I love squid, Have to be one of my favourites

Hi mate, that is a good idea you have mentioned I have done that on fishing rigs before but never on my squid rig I do use quite heavy line though and generally manage to rip it out of the ribbon weed but occasionally I do get snagged and loose the lot, so maybe I should mention your idea to try this on your squid rig, " why not" thanks for saying.......Cheers David

Hi Trevy86. that sign at wirrina is for no fishing in the boat harbour, yes I guess it could cause a bit of confusion. I was fishing on the other side of the break wall, Squid fishing at second valley can be good, but as you know fishing can be up and down. I'm going to do some videos down at second valley not off the jetty though, they will be for squid, garfish, snook, and drummer. best of luck for your next fishing trip.

Gday mate, yes thats normal it doesn't bother the squid when you are casting it out and letting it sink down to the bottom and working it back in, it will have a different look than just floating upside down. You can use a squid jag without removing the weight if you like, you just have to work it a bit faster knowing that it sinks. The idea is you know your squid jag is always near the bottom in the strike zone. Happy squiding

Gday mate when i had my boat i couldnt catch one of those slipery little suckers then a mate put me onto a similar rig to yours but using a ball sinker being a tightarse my jigs are around the same mark as yours ,anyway the first day at my squidding spot and i bagged out in 20 mins and they were whoppers big brown things best day squidding i ever had ,now i am reliquised to the shore and it is good to see it works well there too great video havent had squid for a while now so ill have to get out to sullies and have a go .

Howdy mate. Yep the sinker rig works a treat I learnt It of the Greek fishos on the old Rapid bay jetty many moons ago, me too you don't really need to spend heaps on squid jags. Yes it works well of the shore try a few spots, off the reef along Seaford at low tide can be good also with a float fished shallow and sullies like you said and the good old Port Jetty just up from the steps is good, and try on the top and the bottom and the dodge tides when you go. This technique is very handy to know, if you use a weighted squid jag using this technique work the sinker a bit faster along the bottom back towards you knowing the squid jag is sinking. I personally prefer to remove the weight on the jag so it floats above the bottom. when you get use to doing this you will like it.....Cheers David.

G'Day Mate, thank you. Squid are so much fun and yum aren't they. Have squid always been available over there I never heard of them back in the 70ies when I was there I lived in Hadfield near Glossop but we only fished fresh water.

David Sheldon Fishing . We get plenty here off of the Isle of Wight. We get the European squid, and can grow to about 3:5 feet long. Average is about 12-15 inches though. Matey caught an 8 pounder in harbour Lyme Regis last autumn. There’s more squid now than ever I think. Maybe it’s because there aren’t many fish left in our seas, to predate on them. Who knows. Hi Shane. I have had a look at your channel which is very good you know your stuff, also seen your name in the comments. Thanks for the info about the squid you catch over there, some of them are quite large. Your theory about the numbers increasing sounds fair more squid with less fish feeding on them, similar problem over hear less fish but squid numbers are still strong. Squid are even hassling the tuna fishermen on that show called Wicked Tuna. Yes it's not bad down hear in oz not bad at all, you guys over there had a summer like ours last year we found it funny watching every one sweating in Europe. All the best Shane Cheers David

Hi Alphaftermath. this set up works really well, the sinker finds the bottom for you and your squid jag floats just above in the strike zone. Slowly retrieve your jag casting in and out and moving around if you like. You will still get snagged some times but not as often. Cheers David

Hi alex I use the Neptune tackle squid jags they are cheap around 3 dollars but do the job, the cloth sometimes starts to come of so then I peel it off and the sinker comes of the jag as well, you can also peel the foil of witch reveals the white plastic, without the weight on the jag it floats which is good using the rig I use with the sinker on the bottom
