I think he intended to manipulate Gi-hun but has been obsessed with him in an unhealthy way from the beginning. The looks of love and affection are very much there. He thinks (hopes?) they are similar people because Gi-hun also went back after winning. In-ho left his remaining family in a similar way too, he thinks he would just pull them down. So he opened up to Gi-hun and shared his story about his wife. That was very real. And he had teary eyes when he had to give up being Young-il. That can’t be acting to get on Gi-hun’s good side. There was no one left to act for. The “just manipulation” narrative makes no sense. It ignores a huge chunk of In-ho’s decisions and reactions, even his background. In-ho’s character is so interesting and unique exactly because he wants to manipulate Gi-hun as much as he genuinely loves Gi-hun. Just like he shot his little brother he gave his kidney to, then felt horrible about it. Maybe he wants to pull Gi-hun down to his level morally, maybe he’s hoping Gi-hun would make him better, probably both. Either way, he’s yearning for company and understanding. Young-il’s attempts at bonding are so desperate they come across as creepy for anyone else than Gi-hun. He’s not smooth at all. In-ho’s decisions are arbitrary, his choices getting more risky as the game goes on. His feelings have always been contradictory. Telling Gi-hun to get on the plane… Even back then, sometimes he just wanted the best for him. He joined the games on a whim. Threw a tantrum on a whim… and instead of slapping or shouting, Gi-hun comforted him. Just look at him when Gi-hun chose Jung-bae over him. He was jealous, disappointed that Gi-hun was not feeling the same connection to him. He wanted to choose Gi-hun, but the slightest rejection tipped the scales over. His sense of identity is unstable. Frontman is just a role for In-ho, no less than Young-il was. His lies work because he believes them himself. And that makes him so dangerous. …So I maintain that he loves Gi-hun - in that strange, broken way of his - even if other fans call me a “delulu shipper” or whatever.

I'm loving this analysis. Because we get to see the scenes step by step and deduce sth based on them. There are some parts i agree with it, but i mainly agree ( and kinda want to agree ) with the guy in the comments talking about how all of this cant just be frontman tryna manipulate gi-hun and how there are some signs of affection and love. I also liked how you showed us the edit that made you realize your thoughts and feelings on gi-hun and the frontman. Because for the last 3-4 days, i've been tryna figure out exactly how i started shipping these two lol. And i love how the guy in the comments phrases frontmans love for gi-hun as " strange, broken way of his ". That felt really close to how i feel about his way of seeing things.
