I know my Jaguars pretty well and it has all the hallmarks of the classic Jag sound. It’s a little on the wirey side of the sonic spectrum probably due to the pickups being lower budget but although probably not intentional that’s exactly how CBS Jags sounded! I had a 68 Jag once and it sounded much thinner than the ‘65s I had owned. Terrible oversized neck pocket on the 68 a well. I would imagine that the woodwork and tolerances and finish is better in these Squiers by a considerable margin than a lot of the CBS output.

I got to try one out very similar to this at the LGS the other day through a Fender Blues Junior amp and I came away quite impressed! Makes me want to buy one now. I have the same exact guitar in daphne blue. It also came with a shim from the factory. Most offsets with this bridge/tremolo setup come from the factory this way. Around a 1 degree neck angle is necessary to make the set up work correctly. I recommend replacing with a full pocket shim (make your own or order from Stew Mac). With neck shimmed properly and the bridge set correctly, that trem can become magic.

Excellent video, suh! I'm in the market for one of these. I've had poor luck with Squier in the past, but this year I bought four of the Classic Vibe Stratocasters, and all of them have been excellent. I think Indonesia is the new Japan!

Have this guitar for a year now and it is phenomenal. Plays well, pickups are great for the price, stays in tune surprisingly good and has an unsurpassed tonal variety. To be honest, I have to play a guitar of at least double the price, in order to find some meaningful difference between them in terms of quality. The only real downside that I can think of is that it is quite heavy. Mine is actually heavier (its over 4kg) than most Les Pauls that I have handled and they are notorious for their weight, though this can be a little bit situational.

I assembled a jazzmaster, and modified a squier cabronita tele with a jazzmaster tremolo and jazzmaster American bridge with barrel saddles. Both required shims, to get the break angle of the neck to operate with bridge and tremolo system. Great review, will most likely getting a Jaguar soon Thank you

I think the trem is supposed to be fairly stiff on the Jaguars and Jazzmasters, so that the vibrato is subtle. As opposed to the more radical trem on the Strat. Also, every video I’ve seen of these Squires shows a bit of sandpaper as a shim like that, so that’s probably from the factory. I like that this version has Mustang saddles/bridge, because the originals look like junk. I played one in the local music store and I totally thought the same thing about the neck-sticky, and will need sanded! Of course, that’s my major gripe with every Fender I’ve ever touched, I don’t know why anyone would want a shiny sticky neck. I gotta get one of these though, it just checks all my boxes, and I love to tinker with hardware so I don’t mind spending hours “bonding” with my guitar to make it feel the way I like. Thanks for the show and tell.

This is a great review, thanks mate. 2 questions if you got the time: -Is the neck slim and comfortable enough for short hands (i'm more of a slim D neck shape and the classic vibe tele i've tried recently seemed a bit too thick for my taste)? -Do you think it's versatile enough (tone-wise) for multiple sub-genres of punk/garage music?

Thanks! 1) To me it was pretty slim. But the current CVs all have the same necks I believe. Like a fairly slim C shape. 2) Yes it's a very versatile guitar.

Joey Anthony Guitar I have a question too. How does the bridge do? I know it’s a trem system, but I’d like to know if it does good. I’ve heard from some people that the bridge sinks into the body... I need to know if that’s true.

Sorry Nehemiah, your comment didn't show up to me until recently, for some reason. The bridge is an interesting design. There are two holes in the body, where the two posts from the bridge simply rest inside. Nothing to screw it down. You can adjust height on either end tho. I think the design is so that when you use the trem, the bridge flexes back and forth with the movement of the strings. The bridge on these CV Jags is the nicer "Mustang" version of the bridge. Didn't have any trouble with it.

I can give you an answer on that. I bought my J Mascis over 2 years ago and I've recently acquired this Jaguar too. First off, they're both excellent guitars. Both of them feel great to play and the fretboards are comfortable. The J Mascis fretboard is wider. Tonally, the J Mascis pickups are much hotter than a normal Jazzmaster and the Jaguar so it's a bit dirtier sounding. The trem system isn't too bad. Any serious divebombing needs a retune though. The bridge on the J Mascis is a tune-o-matic so it eliminates all the Jazzmaster/ Jaguar bridge issues. As for the Jaguar, as I said it is a beautiful guitar but, you need to set it up. Joey said it too. I cleaned and oiled the fretboard because it was a bit dirty and dry and a few frets rubbed against the strings (nothing serious) but that disappeared once I cleaned it. The bridge is a bit of a pain in the arse. I had to apply nail varnish to the 2 bridge screws as it kept sinking after setting the height. The friction points need lubing because using the trem knocks it out of tune easily. It's not bad now. I had a set of 9s on there but changed to 10s because the top E kept popping out of the saddle. Last thing, my pickups are microphonic. I don't know if they're supposed to be that way. I like them personally but sometimes they can get out of hand with lots of gain. But it sounds great. Lots of tone options. Comparing them, they're different obviously. I don't think I'll ever sell either of them because they're comfortable to play and sound great and so many tone options. If I had to chose then maybe the J Mascis over the Jag but only by a little and that's because I've had it for over 2 years and it's my main guitar and actually, I had to get used to the J Mascis too because I'd always played a Tele before. If you read any Jazzmaster/ Jaguar forums then you find out that these offsets need setting up. They're not as immediate as Strats or Teles however I think they're the most beautiful sounding guitars out there. Hope that helps :)

My Classic Vibe Jazzmaster was shimmed with the exact same peace of sandpaper when I first bought it so I don't think it was your shop shimming your neck. (Not sure about the plastic card though, that's just plain weird). I threw away mine and my grandpa helped me make a proper shim that covers the entire pocket.

I dont see that being a problem. But, I’ve never sanded a bound beck. Maybe you’d want to be a little careful around the binding area? Especially at first. I use really really light sandpaper tho, almost like a 0000 grade steel wool. Be real gentle. I just try to take that top layer of finish off. Not trying to dig into the wood you know.

Good question Justin. Yes and No at the same time I suppose. The upper "rhythm switch" also engages a slightly different value in the potentiometers so it will sound a little different than just the standard neck pickup switch at the bottom

Found ya from Jimmy. Great Channel. I know it's kind of a thing for guitarists to shit on products made out side of the US. But honestly... They been kicking ass over seas lately lol. Play any Japanese gretsch these days and you can't complain much. Even china, korea, Malaysia etc do decent work. Got a music man SUB bass that's not too shabby considering it was only 200. Pick ups kind of suck and I will replace them but other than that it's great! And even custom shop stuff can have some feats that kind of suck depending on your taste lol. So maybe think twice about dropping 3k or whatever lol. And with a few tools and knowledge of guitar manipulation, you can just about get any hunk of junk to play really nicely. Maybe a few upgrades can't hurt either. Locking tuners, new/different bridge maybe, put in custom shop pick ups? Whatever... Jag has a rep for being a fender with tons of metal on the body with lots of switches. Looks freegin awesome in that black/white/silver combo. I approve of this guitar for anyone lookin for a decent fender.

Thanks for drifting by! Jimmy is the man! Yea honestly the only drawback on this CV Jag is the trem but it’d be an easy/not too expensive swap. But it keeps pace with my Japanese Fender and my Revstar. If you close your eyes to the “Squier” name, you wouldn’t know I don’t think.

How bad is the whammy bar really? I'm about to jump on one of these, but I'd be using it mainly for surf and maybe shoegaze, so I'd be on the bar nonstop. Is it difficult to use? Stability isn't my TOP priority, I can deal with tuning a couple times a day, but I'd rather it not go completely out of tune by the end of the song.

Mine was a little sticky and stiff. Sometimes you’d use it and things would be fine, sometimes you’d use it and the tuning would go out pretty noticeably. Could be some ways to make some adjustments on it to smooth things out. It’s such a good guitar especially for surf music. I would still recommend it.

I want this guitar, but my understanding is that it needs quite a few upgrades to really make it better. I.e., frets need polishing, bridge has problems, wammy bar makes noise, and nut needs a bit of filing.

I bought one from Sweetwater a few months ago. It was horrible! Would not stay in tune, many rattles and buzzes around the bridge & saddles. Also the nut was poorly cut. I don't know, maybe I got a lemon. Sweetwater says they give it a 55 point inspection before shipping, I guess they forgot on this one. Sent it back for full refund. It probably would have cost around $100.00 to get it set up but for a $400.00 guitar to me not worth it.
