What a morning session this was!
With the weather having turned much colder, it almost made for the perfect morning to be out after the bushy tails.
I'd been feeding this location for a few months. Having shot 5 here a few weeks before, I'd noticed the nuts going now within just a couple of days. So I was confident there were a few still to be had. Plus I'd seen one or two there while feeding up on the odd occasion.

I live in New York state in the USA. My immediate neighborhood is overrun with Squirrels. They can be quite destructive. Last year, they ate my flowers, chewed my lead in wire for the cable TV, the windshield wipers on my truck, and also the propane gas line for my BBQ grill. So, I broke out my old pellet rifle, (.177) put a decent scope on it and went to war. In 3 months I killed 86 Squirrels. Average distance 35 feet. My best shot was about 75 feet as he sat on top of a telephone pole. Nice video. Subscribed. Thank you.

@@TeamFoxer I wish you could be allowed to sort out our local Bruntwood Park in Cheadle Hulme as the greys in here are a real pest. They are so emboldened that they screech at and attack small children with food in their hands if they are left unattended. My Jack Russel has shredded a good few in his time but he is getting a bit slow with age now. It used to be so peaceful and sedentary in the park before this pest started breeding out of control.

Same up here in Canada. Black squirrel is most common about 95% of the time, Then you get the odd grey squirrel. Never seen a red squirrel though. There's a city called Oshawa small city North East of Toronto which is a major metropolis. There's literally squirrels everywhere in Oshawa. I counted about 6-8 in the front lawn of 4 houses. Jokingly amongst friends we've renamed that city "Squirrel town".

I live in the US and have shot lots of gray squirrels without ever using a "hide" (or "blind" as we call them here.) Every squirrel I ever shot had seen me, but they just didn't care. I used a .22 rimfire rifle with open sights and the average distance was about 20 yards. I always ate them too! They're good to eat and people have been doing that in the US for centuries!

I'm sure you already know this trick for baiting, run a 3" drywall screw up into the platform where the squirrels are sitting on while eating and put an ear of corn on the screw. They will sit and eat the corn off the cob and you don't have to worry about shooting the glass jar.

@mechredd
@mechredd 5 жыл бұрын
I deer hunt on a farm, and have seen grey squirrels lug an entire ear of corn from the field to their nest some 20 feet up a tree. The smaller squirrels will pack their mouths full of kernels, climb to their nests to unload, then back down to fill their mouths with corn again. Squirrel season ends when deer season starts, so I don't shoot them. I really want to though.

Robin, what do you do with the squirrel carcasses? If you skin them out, then you can salt and dry out the pelts. If you draw the carcasses after skinning, you can cut off and dice up the meat, seal it in a frying pan with a little oil, and then make up squirrel stew in a pan with some fried onion/vegetables, and a little stock. It takes a little time to cook through, but tastes delicious! As one guy once told me.....why should it not taste delicious.....squirrels maybe pests, but they live on the best of everything good in the forest. You certainly shoot enough squirrels to get yourself a decent pan of stew from them. It is the same with rabbit too. Wonderful meat for eating straight, or in a rabbit pie. Pigeons can be roasted, or the breast meat cut out and made into a stew for eating or a pigeon pie. Pigeon breast meat tastes nice done in wine with some fried onion chucked in and seasoning. I was brought up eating all this stuff. Sheeps head, chap (pigs head), brawn (made from chap), chitlins, soused herring, pigs trotters etc. Way back, people did not have much money and lived off the land like this. That's why there were so many poachers! The common people in those times were starving. The people I was brought up with remembered the old ways and ate a lot of this stuff. But I remember it. Not had a nice pan of squirrel stew for years. Really lovely stuff, full of taste, and great on a cold Winters day. Get a small billy can of that and a spoon and you think it's Heaven. Remember saying years ago as a young lad, 'Ah, lovely little bunny rabbit.' I remember my father immediately replying, 'It would look a lot nicer under a crust!' Later he told me that as a lad he had reared rabbits for the slaughter. Then it was on to skinning and gutting rabbits for me. What to look for? The liver, kidneys, and heart of a rabbit can be boiled and eaten BUT on a rabbit liver there is a small sack of bile. When you get a rabbit liver, always try never to burst the bile sack, and remove it and dispose of it complete. Otherwise the bile will poison the meat, and it will taste awful. Also look at the liver very closely. It should be dark red and healthy. If there are faint yellow circles or yellow spots on it throw the entire rabbit away. It is infected with mixy (myxomatosis) and can make you ill. Little tips for rabbit gutters.

Springer spaniel no mate. This was filmed a few weeks ago in December. The game shooting is for me to enjoy. Not ever saying I won’t film one of them but the time being that’s just for me to enjoy. I shot my first Woodcock last weekend and got a left and right. Would have been good to get that on film!

@@TeamFoxer The highest population in the UK for red squirrels is the Isle of Wight. They have no grey squirrels there. If one is sighted they are quickly dispatched. I was lucky to live there for 20 years and hand fed red squirrels at the back door of our house.

Josh Frank reds are protected by law here in the UK. ThTs probably why. Not sure about any other European country.
@davidnoakes4836
@davidnoakes4836 5 жыл бұрын
Josh, as Robin states Red Squirrels are protected in the UK. They are true species which are indigenous to the UK. Grey squirrels are not actually squirrels, they are American tree rats that are classed as vermin. Reds do not cause any destruction to trees or wildlife and are healthy creatures that carry no disease. The same cannot be said for greys, they cost the UK economy millions every year in damage to trees by ring barking.

Robin Foxer or longer and tall and I paint mine with brown fence paint. A bit of protection and they blend in well with the tree. I’ve got a small feeder that holds 10kg of wheat in my step dads garden. It blends in very well. Have a google and play building then. Daz

I'm sure you've addressed it by now... but yes my thought was, put the feeder platform lower and move it off at an angle so the jar isn't always in your background. Another option would be just to put a small piece of wood in front of the jar to protect it from a through-shot.
